23.

2. The university commencement will be held as scheduled on Friday, May 11.

J.

Larry,

I propose the following changes in your draft release:

1. Kenneth R. Feinberg.

2. "Special Masterof the federal September 11h Victim Compensation Fund of 2001"

3. September 11 should be September 11h throughout when referring to the Fund

4. "Tenorist aftacks on New York, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania ."

5. Don't we need a quote ftom Senator Webb and from local Blacksburg elected officials? We want to
minimize the likelihood that Webb or local officials will attack the effort.

6. No, avoid a timeline in the press release and avoid any specifics conceming the payout. The story
should simply relate to President Stegeds request that I provide assistance, not the nature of that
assistance or its timing.

7. "The victims orthe victims' families will determine the nature of their individual assistance."

8. I thought we agreed that the Fund would close for future donations by August 1 (in order to avoid
pushing back the timeline for announcing levels of individual compensation). Funds received after
August 1 would be accepted and be part ofa general scholarship program but would not be included
in the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. lf we wait until September 3 for Hokie contributions, it pushes our
timeline into November. This is a mistake. We want to get the money out ASAP; I thought our
compromise was to use August 1 for the Hokie Fund, and leave subsequent contributions to be
deposited in other University accounts.

My thoughts. Please advise as soon as you determine whether Thursday, July 6 remains the date for the press
conference, and if so, what time? l'll be there. Also, I attach a formal CV which can either be attached to the
press release or will be the subject or your wise editing, Much more up-to-date than your draft summary.

Standing by. Thanks.

Ken

At 3:00pm on April 23,2007 we held a "pool"
Interview. This included a panel of 3 Faculty
and 1 counseror from virginia Tech as weil
as 4 student readers.

This panel was interviewed by 3 organizations:

1. Radio:NpR
2. Television: NBC
3, Print media:Ap
The central theme of the event was, "The first
day back to crass, here we are,,.
The team we serected to represent Virginia Tech
was incredibre. They foilowed the
coaching session instructions beyond excellent. Time
after time they referred back to our 3
major frames for this engagement:
4
we will not be defined by this event. lt is something that happened
to us. lt is not
who we are. They said this numerous times, frequenfly in
their own words and their
own way, as instructed. They constanfly talked about the history
and tradition of
Virginia Tech. They constanfly and with awed reverence,
honored and showed
respect for those affected by this tragic event.
2. All showed respect to the history and tradition,
spoke boldly of the future and
understood who we really are what we really represent.
? The most powerful message they sent was their commitment
to the Virqinia Tech
family and community at every level.

lf we had scripted this entire event, we could not have

done a better job than these folks did,
spontaneously' One of the professors, who did not participate,
made a comment that if we
got our participants from central casting, we
would not have had better players. Both from a
style standpoint and a content standpoint, they were phenomenar.

Pamplin COB
Mary connerley, associate professor of management in the
Pamplin college of Business, specializes in diversity and the
workplace. She has written a book entitled "Leadership in a
Diverse and Multicultural Environmenfi Developing Awareness,
Knowledge, and skills," about leadership and multicultural
issues in the workplace.

virginia Tech is the only university in the counfiy wirh an on-

site intergenerational program, where aging adults share in
planned activities with our child Developmenr cenrer for
Learning and Research.
cos
Researchers in the college are designing light-activared

molecular systems to attack cancer cells. They have recently

introduced a DNA targeting component. second year student
Aaron J. (A.J.) Prussin tr has created an LED system that glows
a beautiful shade of blue when the special molecules

successfully bind to DNA.

Vet Med
Researchers in the center for Molecular Medicine and Infectious

Diseases have developed vaccines that are protecting livestock

worldwide and have federal funding to develop better detection

and diagnostic techniques for infectious (including biowarfare)

agents.
CALS
Faculty in the college of Agriculture and Life Sciences are
investigating how new knowledge and technologies can be tied
to human health and nutrition to assist in the prevention of
chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

CNR
virginia Tech researchers and virginia Cooperative Exrension
specialists are helping meet growing seafood demand by moving
seafood production away from oceans and estuaries and into a

controlled setting. This makes it possible to ward off future

seafood shortages, safeguard the environment, and provide a
spark for new enterprise.
COE
Percival zhang, assistant professor of biological systems
engineering, and colleagues at oak Ridge National Lab and the
university of Georgia have developed a process to produce
hydrogen from the energy stored in sugars to power a fuel cell
-
in a vehicle. That is - you put sugar in your fuel tank. No more
problems with storing and transporting hydrogen.

CAUS
virginia Tech researchers in veterinary medicine, studying the
possibility of human-animal disease transferal, have teamed up
with an interior-design professor from CAUS on a project to
create a t'wo-in-one portable research laboratory and dwelting

that leaves no trace of its presence when removed.
