Sundaram Industries Limited of the TVS group, established TRIBOLOGY INDIA LIMITED in 1984 in collaboration with Hydromecanique Et Frottement (HEF) of France. HEF is a technological giant in the field with a strong back up of research facilities, product development and worldwide customer base. The collaboration helped the company absorb the latest advance and access the several proprietary processes. Tribology is a science of friction, wear and lubrication and attempts solutions to the problems of friction. Tribos in Greek means to sub TRIBOLOGY INDIA LIMITED is a service industry with a difference. The company offers a critical input, a value added services which helps machinery and components last longer, work better, increase productivity and cut down costs. Machine parts and components moving against each other or against another surface are subject to friction and wear. If unchecked they will decay. A considerable percentage of the countys GNP is lost every year through damages caused by friction and wear. Tribology solutions are essentially in the nature of modifying the surface of the components to withstand the forces of friction and wear. This is called surface Modification or Surface Engineering. These include several surface modification process and thermal treatments.

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

TIBOLOGY INDIA LIMITED (TIL), a TVS group, established in 1984, is a technology Oriented Organization, offering specialized services in Surface Engineering processes and products. It had entered into a technical and financial collaboration with Hydromecanique et frottement of France,

which is a reading surface engineering and consultancy firm in Europe with world wide network. 2 As a result of this collaboration, TIL has been able to absorb latest advances of HEF, effected through their R&D efforts. Also TIL is able to offer the patented processes and products of HEF through TILs own outlets in India. TIL is involved in introducing to India, the concept of Surface Engineering and enabling technologies. TILs centre for Technology Development continuously updated its knowledge nase through in house research backed by the know how offered by HEF. It has entered into working arrangements with the few academic and technical institutions in the country to utilize mutual facilities for common projects of concern to large segments of industries. Tribology India offers a wide range of treatments, at the surface and beneath the surface. The surface engineering technologies are primarily from HEF while the substrate engineering consists of Heat Treatments and cold treatments are done utilizing technologies from other parts of the world.
