Porn, Cultural Industry and Zeitgeist

Among the extras on the DVD of Basic Instinct, has an interview with Paul Verhoeven, director of the film. The reporter, apparently from the Dutch TV talks about the fact that Mr. Verhoeven was one of 10 dutch personalities more successful. Very wisely, Verhoeven says that success is relative and takes advantage of this opportunity to say that his last film at that time, The Hollow Man, was a commercial success, but it was an empty movie for him. As director, he also claims that things are getting harder (It's at the time of the interview, now is even worst) because everything was only in the name of profit and the easy empty fun. Francis Ford Coppola, says something similar in the extras of Bram Stoker's Dracula, where the Italian-American filmmaker, says that today he feels more accomplished with the winery that making movies, because it is borderline impossible to find funding for more personal projects. In the early '80s, the fierce film critic Pauline Kael wrote a prescient article titled "Why are movies so bad? Or, the Numbers, "and that recently came to light in a column of Andre Barcinski to site uol.com. In the article, Pauline already stated among other things: "Movies are so bad lately that I do not think they are attracting the public, I think they're inheriting an audience." Going further: "The studios believe that good box office results are evidence that viewers enjoy the movies, and TV executives believe the programs are the largest audience that the public wants, not what the public accepts." Needless to say any more. Just look at the vast majority of movies currently in theaters. Let us return again in time a bit. Richard Corliss, in his article When Porn Was Chic said at the end of the text that one reason for the decline of the golden period of American pornographic film of the 70s, there was not only the advent of VHS as many think, but the success of films like Jaws and Star Wars. Since the overwhelming success of these two films between the mass of youth and adolescents has made executives, distributors and exhibitors were unaware of any attempt aimed more for the adult market. We should remember here that we're talking about porn movies made in the so called phenomenon of porno chic that went beyond mere show onanist to try a more profound and daring of many aspects of sexuality. Let us return to 2010. The landscape of the entertainment industry in general, is bleak. The music market is suffering through a process of slow sales, less the fault of illegal downloads and more due to the successive investments headless executives in disposable music. The audience which really consumer of music, are older now, many of the possible new music lovers have been educated for a long time with bad and meaningless music. How could they know that music is something deeper, if this industry for years pushed down our throats things we hear now and forget after a while? How to demonstrate the importance of hearing something that a composer has worked for a while, he thought a lyrics with some deep meaning, and whose production is something full of layers, when the executives were taught to buy and consume empty image? This leads to another problem more subjective. Previously, when someone bought a CD or even LP more complicated, met friends to share the moment it was to hear that stuff. There was a cultural exchange in the process of listening to music. Today it's easier, but also that the Internet allows the twist of views on certain work on a global scale, not everyone is willing to do so. Even as they were not educated for it.

The phenomenon is similar to the comic, who suffered in the 90's with the idea of stories and series events, but whose depth was the same as a spoon. Horror story that sold, but whose cultural relevance can be measured on what happens today. As much as to say that comics are now more important than ever were because of the association with Hollywood, you better look more closely. Or do you really think that make millions with adaptations for the cinema is the thermometer of success? When you create a comic book adaptation ever thinking for the big screen and not in developing a mythology all its own in the Ninth Art, it is because something is very wrong. Best is to be brave and just write the script for a damn movie. Already gone a long time in the 80s when comics were overrun by things relevant as the stories made to Daredevil by Frank Miller. Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Watchmen's Moore. Material that is still relevant. Many years later, Frank Miller has become a mockery of comic writing for the comics and a nullity as a filmmaker (just see their adaptation to the Spirit). It is worth remembering that I am speaking here of mainstream, I know that there are very good things being done independently. But even these have a certain difficulty to survive. The thing is as ugly as well with the cinema. The era of the movies events continues. Avatar was an empty spectacle, whose predictability of the script is proportional to box office success, largely due to the 3D, which made industry executives, this race of headless suits want to do anything silly in 3D. What these beasts do not realize, or realize most do not bother with it because they are a parasitic race who does not care if the cinema will live or die, since they got another place to suck the life. What they do not realize is just that boldness, integrity is what makes something lasting. Many movie fans still watch the Wind (made in 1939), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Apocalypse Now (1979). But it's good to be quiet or stupids executives can understand wanting to do wrong and one of the most unnecessary remakes that appear all the time. Many movies today are made with the touch of immediacy, how long people will continue watching Twilight and the like? The movies today follow a formula that can even generate dividends at the box office, but that is damaging the art and industry in the medium and long term. It bring us a perfect example of profit yesterday, which led to a bleak present. The porn industry is dying, by her own fault. That for years have earned the easy profits of the gonzo videos. The production cheap and quick references to the video market generated absurd profits for a long time, but the public got used only the scenes of an isolated way, not taught to see the whole, to see explicit sex inserted in a context narrative-dramatic and aesthetic, as the old classic porn movies form 70's did. There is nothing that would affect illegal downloads. With the hinge, so I'll worry about having an entire movie scenes repeating, if I want just a small highlight to see while I masturbate? There are many people wanting to do something different. These people those struggling with addictions cultivated by idiots in the industry who sabotaged an entire entertainment area. So with the porn, and will thus be in music, and movies, on a smaller scale, but will be. Except that instead of lamenting. If you can use the Internet as a tool to support, and with it still trying to do something relevant, not just more of it for immediate consumption.Because of that we must celebrate the initiatives of people like Maria Beatty who makes wonderful movies that even the most radical anti-porn be in conflict when he watches. My friend Ruy who is still sailing against the average current here in Brazil. Chase Lisbon, Erika Lust, tough a little weiner in her speech, but

her films have a very quality and personal characteristic all in its own. Jennifer Lyon Bell. And of course Kink.com.
