Why did the Slovene population in Trieste decrease so dramatically ? (Some facts about the past of the town of Trieste)

domenica 22 gennaio 12

Trieste

domenica 22 gennaio 12

For over 500 years (from 1382 until 1918) Trieste was part of the Habsburg Monarchy, later known as the Austrian Empire (1804-1867) and Austro-Hungary (from 1867 to 1918).

domenica 22 gennaio 12

In the 19th century Trieste was the most important port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, at that time one of the Great Powers of Europe.

In between the 19 th and the

domenica 22 gennaio 12

In the fin-de-siecle period, Trieste emerged as a cosmopolitan city and an important hub for literature and music. Its cultural life was shaped by artists and philosophers like James Joyce, Italo Svevo, Sigmund Freud, Dragotin Kette, Ivan Cankar, Scipio Slataper, Umberto Saba and others.

domenica 22 gennaio 12

At the beginning of the 20th century: Trieste was the largest Slovene town (56,000 Slovene inhabitants). At that time the population of Ljubljana, today the capital city of Slovenia, with its German speaking minority, amounted to 52,000.

Under Austrian rule, things had never been very good for the Slavic minorities, though with great efforts, the Slovenes and other Slav groups had built up strong economic foundations under the Austrian Empire, with their own banks, major shipping and industrial companies, and a network of schools and cooperatives.

domenica 22 gennaio 12

However, the collapse of the AustroHungarian Empire in 1918 and Trieste's annexation to Italy after WW1 led to a decline of its economic and cultural importance. Trieste became a peripheral city.

domenica 22 gennaio 12

This is the beginning of a harsh economic period: the town becomes part of a country that does not need its port, its trade connections with countries that were not considered as trading partners. The town gets poorer and poorer.

domenica 22 gennaio 12

And then the Fascists came to

domenica 22 gennaio 12

With the arrival of Italian rule, things for non-Italian-speaking communities began to go from bad to worse. In particular, Mussolini's Fascists made vigorous efforts to squeeze the economic, linguistic and cultural life out of the 500,000 Slovenes in areas occupied by the Italians.
