Cheerleaders Take Center Stage

L-Town Wins Championship
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer A few setbacks earlier in the week did not stop the Raiders from winning the St. Marys County Winter Cheerleading Championship Feb. 8 at Leonardtown High School. In the week prior to the championship, the Raiders endured injuries; missed practices caused by a snow day and had to re-work their routine. However, none of those hindrances seemed to affect Leonardtown, as they hit the mats with one goal: taking home the county title and earning a spot in the Regional tournament at Great Mills. I think the girls pulled together and did awesome considering what weve dealt with, Raider coach Donna Hammett said. Weve had a couple of injuries and a lot of different things going on so they pulled it together and really did well. After watching their junior varsity team, who competed against Chopticon in an exhibition, the Raiders varsity cheerleaders were up, and they were happy to go first, according to senior co-captain Meghan Burris. I like going first because you get it out of the way and you dont have to worry, she said. Leonardtown stepped into the limelight and nailed their routine without any major mistakes. Hammett said after the competition that the best part of her teams routine was tumbling, but captain Jenna Donovan felt the end, when we knew we stuck it all, was the highlight of the performance. Maintaining the Lead

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer If there were any questions as to whom would be this seasons SMAC swim champions, the Lady Raiders of Leonardtown answered them boldly, winning seven of the 11 events and breaking records en route. Five Raider swimmers took home individual titles and two relay teams won gold as well in the meet, which was held at the Prince Georges County Sport & Learning Complex over the weekend. The girls did keep their record going and I think they put a lot more pressure on themselves now to maintain that record than they do anything else, Raiders head coach Megan Shelton said. They know theres a high standard coming in. Its something new for all the freshmen, but the returning swimmers make sure they understand whats expected of them. Everyones coming after Leonardtown. Before the Raiders dove into the competition, though, Shelton challenged them. I told them that if they were up by 50 points before the last event, we would let our seniors race the last relay, Shelton said. The Raiders were up by 50 points indeed, and the seniors raced the last event of the meet. That was definitely a highlight for us, Shelton added. To build that 50-point lead, the Raiders spread their talent throughout all the events and came out on top in a majority of them. In the first race of the day, Caitlin Branaman, Davi Clark, Justine Cavnor and Brittany Culpepper teamed up to win the 200 medley relay. Each of those girls took home a first place finish individually as well. Branaman won the 100 backstroke, Clark placed first in the 200 IM, Cavnor won the 50 freestyle and Culpepper took gold in the 100 breaststroke in a recordsetting time. On the boys side, Leonardtown finished fourth. Senior Jackson Webb took home first place in the 500 freestyle. According to Shelton, the boys See SMAC Champs page B-5

Reserves Deliver Big for Seahawks

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Saint Marys College Seahawks turned to their bench Saturday against Gallaudet University, and the reserves delivered big. Eleven players put points on the board as the Seahawks cruised to an 85-64 win at home. Overall, the Seahawk bench outscored the Bisons bench 55-28. They even outscored their own starters. Our goal all season long was to have games like this where we could play everybody, Seahawks head coach Chris Harney said. And not in just the last minute, we wanted everyone to get significant playing time. So I was happy that we were able to do that. Weve been playing more as a team and the more we play as a team, the more we make the extra pass and stuff, everyones kind of getting involved and once everyone gets involved it kind of snowballs into everyone playing great, added sophomore guard Kyle Sullivan. Sullivan came off the bench in the first half. In one of his first plays on the court, he caught a pass from T.J. Jordan, sprinted down the court and soared to the rack for a one-handed dunk. He topped that off by swishing two consecutive threes. Coming off the bench is hard sometimes but the home-court definitely helps a lot, Sullivan said. I feel like coach has more confidence in me, which is good. Sullivan (10 points) was one of four Seahawk players to score in double-digits. Jordan brought energy off the bench as well, scoring 13 points and picking up five steals. Whatever is needed at that certain time, I try to be there. Sometimes its defense, Jordan said. Rams Run Over Raiders

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Leonardtown Raiders girls basketball team struggled to keep up with the visiting Rams of McDonough Monday night and fell 4131 in SMAC action. The first quarter of the game was close, with both teams fighting for control. The Rams took a slim 9-6 lead before going on a 13-5 run in the second quarter. According to Raider coach Ed Carney, the Raiders made too many offensive mistakes and did not match the Rams physical play. We turned the ball over too much, Carney said. We were not making smart passes. We turned the basketball over and we didnt play with the intensity that they did. I think this is one of the few times we havent come to play. Theyre more athletic than we are so we have to play equally as physical as they did. And we didnt. Still, the Raiders picked up the pace in the second half both defensively and offensively. After switching from a 2-3 zone to man-to-man See Raiders page B-5

Hot Handed Shooters
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer A 6-of-8 shooting performance from behind the arc by guard Kiely Murphy lifted the Lady Seahawks of St. Marys College past Gallaudet Saturday afternoon. The next day in a makeup game at Villa Julie College, freshman guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin picked up where Murphy left off, scoring 29 points in a 64-54 comeback win. knocked Saint-Aubin down 25 of her career-high 29 points in the second half against the Mustangs to claim the lead once and for all. She scored 7-of-12 from the field and buried 14-of-17 at the charity stripe. Forward Allie Scott was not far behind Saint-Aubin with 20 points. The Seahawks are closing out the regular season on a good note. Along with those two wins, the Hawks recently knocked off Salisbury in an away game Feb. 8. Concluding a two-game sweep over the Bisons this season, Murphy racked up 19 points in 34 minutes of play as the Hawks coasted to a 52-28 win on its home turf. Shes a very talented shooter, St. Marys head coach Nan Hambrose said of Murphy. Whenever we get her involved, it puts us in a good spot. Murphys 10 points in the first period put her team in control as the Seahawks hit the locker room with a 32-11 halftime lead. Different Communication, Outstanding Performance

getting each others attention. These are all aspects of sports that require strong communication skills. For Gallaudet, this critical aspect of basketball is made more difficult, but not impossible. Instead of shouting out the name of a play, they motion it with their hands. To get each others attention, they often stomp on the floorboard. They also mouth words and read each others lips. When the coach wants to give his or her bench some advice, they turn to them and communicate in sign language. In reality, they are the embodiment of teamwork and communication, and watching them in action is like nothing I had seen before. Aside from the small dissimilarities in communication, the Bisons play just like any other team. They are strong, fast, athletic, tough, and they are not taken lightly by the competition. Chris Harney, head coach of the mens team at St. Marys College described Gallaudet as a dangerous team that is capable of beating anyone. In fact, the Bisons recently beat Catholic University, a team that has beaten the Seahawks twice this year. Gallaudet may be even more dangerous when it comes to football. In 2005, they had their first unbeaten season in school history. We see it all the time on TV: quarterback calls a timeout because the crowd is so loud, they cant hear the play-call in their helmet speaker. Players on the Gallaudet football team are forced to call plays non-verbally every time they huddle up. But they are not the only deaf athletes in history to be successful. As a matter of fact, it was a deaf baseball player who may have changed the way the game is played today. Dummy Hoy was in the Major Leagues from 1888 to 1902 and is credited by many for causing the establishment of signals for safe and out calls, which of course, are still used by umpires today. Another very successful deaf athlete is Terrence Parkin, who won the silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Parkin had to use a strobe light signal to know when to start swimming. This past summer, I had the chance to visit Gallaudet University with my cousin, who is deaf in one ear. To walk the buildings and streets of the campus is a great way to learn more about the beauty and power of deaf culture, and watching their basketball teams in action this weekend only renewed that beauty and power.

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Imagine running up and down the field, or court, and not being able to hear the fans cheer you on. Imagine dribbling up the court, and not being able to hear your coach call out a play. Imagine playing any sport without being able to hear the referee or umpires whistle. You are now in the shoes of a Gallaudet University athlete.

Gallaudet is a liberal arts university in Washington D.C. for the deaf and hard of hearing with 16 Division III sports teams. This weekend, their mens and womens basketball teams traveled to St. Marys College to face the Seahawks. What I (and the hundreds of fans that crowded the gym) saw was truly remarkable and inspiring. Every one knows that communication is vital in sports. Any coach in any team-sport can tell you the same. Thats why you often hear them yelling at their players from the sideline: Talk to each other! Calling out plays, giving encouragement,

seats are comfortable if you dont mind sitting up at a 90 angle. In typical Volkswagen fashion, all instrumentation is illuminated by blue and red lighting that is clearly visible and gives the cabin a warm red glow at night. The GTIs unique steering wheel is inspired by open-wheel race cars with flat surfaces at 10:00 and 4:00 for driving with your knees during a victory lap. I for one do not recommend hands-free driving but obviously someone at Volkswagen thinks its alright Test Drive I must admit that my overall impression of the GTI was just so-so until I really got a chance to lay into it. I was expecting the typical lethargic response of a turbocharged 4-cylinder but was truly surprised with the torque produced by the 200hp engine. The 6-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and under hard acceleration I felt essentially no turbo lag. The GTIs suspension is very firm so you experience every nook and crevice in the road. However, if you are the type that likes to feel Photo by Jesse Stump at one with a car then you will love the way this thing drives. The new GTI is also availis ample in the rear and the able with a 6-speed automatic transmission that includes steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. This makes for an appealing alternative for those that cant drive stick, but if you have the choice I would definitely recommend the manual. Overall Volkswagen does a great job in its effort to bring the GTI back to its sport-inspired roots. By: Jesse Stump Contributing Writer The Volkswagen GTI was first introduced in the U.S. to rave reviews in 1983 the high output hatchback was born. At a time when car enthusiasts were craving affordable German performance, Volkswagen hit a homerun. Nowadays, nearly every automaker has dabbled in the competitive hot hatch market and the GTI has spent the past decade slowly drifting from its sport-inspired roots.

However, in 2006 Volkswagen redesigned its best-selling model and finally went back to basics. Walk Around The GTIs exterior was given a much needed makeover and was done so with the sport-car enthusiast in mind. While the previous generation was often criticized for its ho-hum styling, the new model takes on a much more aggressive persona. The GTI is available with 18 wheels that show off bright red brake

calibers and come wrapped with low-profile performance tires. A body kit package is also available and even further accentuates the cars athletic stance. Although I generally like the GTIs new look, I am not a huge fan of the black honeycomb grill that comes standard on all models. Interior For being a relatively small vehicle the GTIs cabin is surprisingly spacious. The seats are available in either leather or Volkswagens trade-

Continued from page B-1 With no room for error, the Braves were up next. They got through their dance routine without mistakes, but after dropping a few builds, it became clear the Raiders would walk away with the trophy and continue their season at Regionals. Were very humbled by it, Hammett said. We werent expecting anything, we werent thinking that we were better than anybody because we have been dealing with so much in the last few days. Getting the county championships out of the way was a relief for Leonardtown after facing so many obstacles, but now they have to regroup once again to achieve a newer and bigger goal: placing in the topfour at Regionals to advance to the State Championship. While this is a clear goal for the team, Hammett just expects maximum effort from her athletes. Of course wed like to do well at regionals, she said. But we can only ask them to do their best. Regardless of whether or not the Raiders advance to States, they will be able to look back on the year and see just how much they have improved. In the fall, Chopticon beat Leonardtown and Great Mills to win the County Championship. I think the girls really work together well and theyve become closer and I think that has a lot to do with [the success], Hammett said. Weve worked really hard and weve gone through a lot and learned a lot about our teammates. And weve learned to trust them a lot and I feel like building that trust

I think we played pretty good defense, Carney said. I think [McDonough] scored off of rebounds, but I think overall on the floor we played pretty good defense. We could have rebounded better and we should have. The Raiders went shotfor-shot with McDonough in the fourth quarter their strongest of the game and ended up outscoring the Rams 12-11. But the damage had al-

I dont think we were at the top of our game, she said. Several [swimmers] did drop times in the meet. But 11 of our 15 kids are new to high school swimming this year, so this was their first SMAC meet. You cant train experience, and I think that was probably the one place where we lost a couple of those meets. The teams that placed ahead of

us, they had many more senior boys, and experience in those types of meets make the difference. The Raiders also had to deal with a few issues during the week of the SMAC championships. Before SMAC we had a bunch of kids go sick and then we had to miss practice on Wednesday with it being a snow day, so that hurt us in a way, Shelton said. For the girls team, who are still undefeated in their three years of SMAC competition, there is a big red circle marking this weekends Regional Championship at Saint

Marys College. I think if they do their best, they do have a chance at the championship for regionals, Shelton said. The main thing is that you achieve your best time; that you swim as hard as you can. The Raiders are also aiming to notch as many top-four finishes as possible, as the top-four individuals in each event will advance to the State Meet at the University of Maryland.

Raiders
Continued from page B- defense, Leonardtown was able to match McDonoughs 20 points in the last 16 minutes of play. Kirsten Olson led the way for Leonardtown with 11 points and five rebounds. Center Misty Stachowski had a strong performance as well, with four points, six rebounds,

ready been done and Leonardtown (6-13 overall) suffered their third straight loss. With just three games remaining on the schedule, the Raiders are focused on ending the regular season on a positive note, according to Carney. We talked about [our goals] tonight after the game, he said. We have to make an attempt at going out there and being ready to play the game.
