RAVINGS
By Mike Hickey
RIGHT THING
I am surprised and pleased that with the minimal snow fall and
generally freezing temperatures, getting back out to the woods
has been a breeze. Although, I will never live long enough to
fnish the project, I have started pruning back the signifcant
over-growth that has been taking place. Ten or twenty foot
spruce and fr will try and grow two feet away from a towering
sixty foot pine and although they can enjoy a few years of life,
they are doomed as they will never get enough sunlight to grow
much further. So they sit there and compete with the pine for
moisture and nutrients only to end up as a dead twenty foot
stick that has no commercial or practical use other than to make
working in the woods virtually impossible until you do get rid
of them.
Ive even got the missus helping out with this project. On the
days that she is able to join Te Jet and I on our regular walk
in the woods, we stop at various spots along the trail and start
cleaning up the dead debris that has accumulated over the years.
She actually seems to get great delight in grabbing an old three
inch tree and kicking or pushing it too the ground and then
dragging and piling it along the roadside.
So why would anyone tackle what is clearly a very long term
project when your personal long term is relatively short (old
that is)?? Well, because it is darn good exercise and because
it is the right thing to do. Even though there are no obvious
successors to continue this project afer our demise, taking care
of things is just the right thing to do. Who knows, maybe one
of the grand-grand daughters might become a forester and love
using axes and chainsaws. Te fact is we can only control the
present (somewhat) and hope that what we value will somehow
be carried on by others.
Like raising children, you do the very best job that you can and
hope like heck that things will turn out for the best. 800

Tis is our 15

year of the Marigold Project. Te
seeds, soils/trays are being ordered and the schools
and sponsors are being organized (most start
growing at the end of February). If you require
information on the Marigold Project contact me
at: barry.ogden@nbed.nb.ca.
Teachers use cross curriculum learning with
their Marigolds: Math - counting germination
rates, science - growth of plants, art work,
environmental science, entrepreneurship and
community (empowering themselves), writing/
poetry, social studies - an understanding of their
community. We also use the various forms of learning: hands
on, visual, audio and learn that community and the child and
school are all connected. Besides our sponsors and teachers we
get help from municipal employees and seniors. Many of our
gardens have become tourist attractions and develop a great
sense of pride and community.
Over 2.5 million marigolds in 15 years at 55 sites in the Fundy
Region from Sussex to St. Stephen by thousands of children have
been planted. We also encourage everyone to plant marigolds
and more trees especially ever green trees so we will have green
year round. Each tree takes tons of carbon out of the air and
provides us with the life giving air we all need.
Sincerely , Barry Ogden, Teacher. 942

RING MEMoRIal BuRSaRy aNNouNcED
In 1979 Barbara (Cox) Ring and Don Ring opened the Ring
Gallery of Art on Prince William Street in Saint John and
successfully ran it until Barbs untimely death in September of
1982. Afer a brief closure, Don reopened the gallery in 1984
and with the help of Sheila Ross continued to run a unique and
well respected business until Sheila became ill in 1997.
Don and Barb were well respected and played an integral part
in the arts community. Trough the gallery, they promoted and
helped many young, gifed and up and coming artists spread
their wings. Over the years of running the gallery through
access, but mostly due to good taste, Don and Barb accumulated
a very large collection of very fne works of art. When Don
passed away in 2009 afer a period of failing health, their son
Stephen was lef with the collection.
Afer many hours of discussion with his wife Pamela it was
decided that something must be done to honor his parents
memory. Tis year (2012) marks the 30
th
anniversary of Barbs
death and so, with the help of Peter Buckland, a large sale was
held to dispose of the bulk of the works in the collection.
Now, from the proceeds of the sale, a fund has been set up with
Te Greater Saint John Community Foundation. Te Barbara &
Don Ring Memorial Bursary will assist a deserving student from
Saint John High and Harbour View High wishing to pursue post
secondary studies in the arts. Te frst awards will be presented
in June to a 2012 Graduate.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to the fund can do so
through the Greater Saint John Community Foundation with
a memo directing it to the Barbara and Don Ring Memorial
Bursary Fund. 717

HuMaN RIGHTS FoRuM IN HaMPToN
Te Hampton John Peters Humphrey Foundation will host
Nobel Peace Prize Nominee and former International Chair
of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, Sheila Watt-Cloutier, at
their upcoming Annual Human Right Forum, on Wednesday,

Working with global decision makers for over a decade, Watt-
Cloutier ofers a new model for 21
st
Century leadership. She
treats the issues of our day - the environment, the economy,
foreign policy, global health, and sustainability - not as separate
concerns, but as a deeply interconnected whole. She maintains
that every decision, whether environmental, political or
economic, has a profound efect on those far from the corridors
of power; and to understand this connection is vital to building
a sustainable world.
Currently a visiting scholar at Mount Allison University
in Sackville NB, Sheila Watt-Cloutier normally resides in
Nunavut. She is the recipient of numerous global awards and
honourary degrees and remains connected to her lifes work
through activism and advocacy which includes membership
as Commissioner on the Civil Society Commission on Arctic
Climate Change led by the Aspen Institute.

MUSINGS
By Debbie Hickey
GaMER . . . NoT
One of my younger co-workers expressed a little surprise at our
recent purchase of an Xbox 360 Kinect game system. Guess I
didnt seem the gamer type. Likely because in large part, Im
not. But exercise using a game system is SO much more fun than
standing around doing jumping jacks or deep knee bends. With
the Xbox I can leap, duck, stretch and bend while gaining points
white water rafing or playing rallyball (similar to handball). I
am impressed at the realism, particularly with the white water
rafing one. We have not yet purchased any additional games
beyond those that came bundled with the system, as I prefer to
do a little research frst. Tis is an exercise tool for me, so I am
not looking for any shoot em up/beat em up kinda games. Still
there are a couple, such as Fruit Ninja and Junk Fu, that sound
both energetic and fun.
Tere was an interesting article recently on a study of elderly
adults and exercise that indicated there are mental/cognitive
benefts to exercising in a virtual world. Te seniors who were
cybercycling (i.e. had their stationary bicycles equipped with
a virtual reality screen that had them cycling through various
outdoor scenes or running virtual races) not only lowered their
risk of mental decline but actually improved in areas such as
decision-making and multi-tasking. Plus they had more fun!
Tis time last year Ossekeag Publishing commenced our
walking challenge. I cannot speak for any of the other members
of the Ossekeag team, but once the 13 week challenge ended I
just kept right on going. I was curious how many steps and how
far that would be for the past year so I did a little calculating.
In the past 52 weeks I have walked a grand total of 5,701,918
steps, which if the rule of thumb that 10,000 steps = 5 miles is
correct, is about 2850 miles. If I were walking across Canada
that would put me just about
to the B.C. border. I havent
reduced my walking, but am
endeavouring to add some
additional exercise to my day
and the Xbox is part of that
goal. But I wont be posting
any of the action photos to
my Facebook page! 801
