(RE), directly above the equator. Also, the magnetopause -- the boundary between Earths magnetic field (magnetosphere) and the surrounding plasma -- is usually cited as being at 10-12 Earth radii but this varies dependent on the speed of the solar wind or solar activity. If you look at the diagram on page 27 of the essay The Greatest Transition, the magnetosheath/magnetopause is under pressure and is colour coded red, but the scale means that it can become white-hot. The black disk with a dot is the location of Earth. On 7th July 2009, the magnetosheath/magnetopause was punched so hard that the whole boundary moved half way back to Earth where we place the satellites in geostationary or geosynchronous orbit (the definitions are not the same, see the www.ehow.com reference below). At the famous Space Weather Bastille Day event in 2001, the magnetopause moved as close as 4.9RE to Earth and left 3 geosynchronous GOES satellites exposed in the magnetosheath, a dynamic region of turbulent plasma flow that acts a barrier to the plasma in the surrounding solar system. Now, the YouTube video referenced below shows the magnetopause position & 3-day history of magnetopause standoff & cross cap ionospheric potential difference. It also shows that around the 7/7/2009 the magnetopause was actually varying from 9.5 - 14.5RE and that it was pushed back to about 5RE which according to space weather researchers is about the limit that it can go.
