PEACHY CANYON WINERY

BY liNDsaY masTeN loPez

Just off the road on the increasingly famous 46 West Highway there stands a clapboard schoolhouse. It has stood there, off what is now a main artery of wine country, since 1886. As a place of Paso Robles history it is perfectly suited to hold its current tenet: the Peachy Canyon Winery tasting room. With founding vintners Doug and Nancy Beckett at the helm, Peachy Canyon has been steadily making its own brand of history since its beginnings in the early 1980s. Then, Doug and Nancy were teachers determined to make a life for themselves in rural California. They began with dreams of a walnut farm, but fate took hold, and Doug soon had his mind set on bigger ventures a winery. Christened Peachy Canyon in honor of the original location off Peachy Canyon Road (and, some say, in homage to the local legend of an oddly named horse thief ), the winery today has come a long way since its humble roots. Currently, Peachy Canyon has four rolling estate vineyards, equalling 100 acres, dedicated to their cause: Snow Vineyard, Mustang Springs Ranch vineyard, the Old Schoolhouse Vineyard and Mustard Creek Vineyard. Each of these vine-

yards offers up its own namesake Zinfandel. Its only right, as Zinfandel is Peachy Canyons forte. Doug and Nancys first vintage was Zinfandel, crafted by hand in five-gallon water bottles and aged in barrels borrowed from a friend. That first load of Zin came from Benito Dusis famous vineyard. However, since then, Peachy Canyon has become a dedicated grower of Zins in its own right. As avid Zinfandel enthusiasts, the Becketts and Peachy Canyon Winery are active members in ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers), and have set aside an experimental planting on their Mustang Springs estate vineyard for Zinfandel research. This block is part of the UC Davis Heritage Project, and provides research on Zinfandel origins as well as preservation. And thats not the only preservation Peachy Canyon takes part in. The winery is also proudly SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certified. The vineyards compost waste accumulated throughout harvest, and reuse that to fertilize the vineyards. This, in addition to cover crops and the use of beneficial insects like ladybugs keeps Peachy vineyards healthy, for everyone. From humble beginnings to devoted winemakers, Peachy Canyon has come full circle.

Flying Goat Cellars Awarded Double Gold at 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
Flying Goat Cellars 2009 Pinot Noir Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard ($46) was awarded a Double Gold at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. This was the highest scoring Pinot Noir from a Sta. Rita Hills AVA vineyard, just shy of being a sweepstakes winner. Flying Goats 2009 Pinot Noir Garey Ranch Vineyard ($42.00) was awarded a Silver and 2009 Goat Bubbles Blanc de Blancs Sierra Madre Vineyard ($38.00) was awarded a Bronze. We are thrilled that the results of this competition position us with some of the finest wines in the world and signal to consumers that we produce wines worth purchasing, said winemaker Norm Yost. We were a 2007 sweepstakes winner and benefited immediately from Northern California media exposure and purchases on our website. The 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition set a new American wine competition record with 5,575 entries and 1,723 wineries. For nine consecutive years, this prestigious competition holds strong as the Largest Competition of American Wines in the World. Lompoc resident DeWayne Holmdahl was one of 65 judges at the competition. I was proud to see a Lompoc winery using fruit from Sta. Rita Hills AVA score so well, Holmdahl said. Flying Goat and other local wineries, such as Huber and Alma Rosa, represented our local appellation with several award-winning wines. Results were announced online at www.sfgate.com and www.winejudging.com on January 6, 2012. A public tasting of these award-winning wines will be at the Festival Pavilion, Fort Mason Center in San Francisco from 2 to 5 p.m. on February 18. Flying Goat Cellars has been handcrafting vineyard designated Pinot Noir since 2000 and sparkling wine since 2005. The tasting room is located in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto, 1520 East Chestnut Court, Unit A, Lompoc and is open Thursday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other days may be available to open our doors for you, so contact Kate for an appointment at (805) 7369032 or info@flyinggoatcellars.com. Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-theart stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. At Vina Robles, the owners bring their Swiss heritage to Californias Central Coast, where they unite the best of both the old and new worlds. The team has built a stylistic bridge between the finesse of the European wine and the bold flavors of the estate grown Paso Robles grapes. Sourcing fruit from their five estate vineyards located on both the east and west sides of Paso Robles wine country the winery is able to take advantage of the diverse growing conditions to create standalone varietals as well as unconventional blends with distinctive character. The best place to enjoy the Vina Robles experience is at their Hospitality Center located just off of Highway 46 East on Mill Road in the heart of Paso Robles wine country. The varietals produced include Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Tannat, Touriga, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Viognier as well as a number of unconvential blends. The wine tasting fee is waived with purchase. A new seated tasting area has been added to the tasting room by the fireplace. The caf style area is the ideal place to enjoy a seated tasting of cheese and wine. Luana Gerardis, director of hospitality at Vina Robles, recently launched the new tasting program. Some of the most glorious flavors in the culinary world are created with the marriage of the right wines to the right cheeses. Starting in February, we are excited to introduce a sit down wine and cheese experience in our hospitality center. Guests will have the chance to sample some local and international artisan cheese perfectly paired with the elegant and balanced wines of Vina Robles. We want to provide guests with a great tasting experience and even inspire them to host their own wine and cheese pairings. In addition to the two cheese pairing menus, the hospitality center will soon be offering a gourmet chocolate tasting menu. Whether visitors decide to enjoy a tasting menu, purchase items from the deli case, or bring their own picnic, there are many places to sit and enjoy food with wine. The large fountain in the courtyard is a focal point offered from the tables scattered along the perimeter of the building. The tables are tucked in under the buildings roof to offer shelter from rain or direct sunlight. Another peaceful retreat is on the east side of the building where tables and chairs are set by a gorgeous waterfall-style fountain. For those who prefer to sit inside, decorative tables with chairs and lounge areas can be found within the hospitality center. The Vina Robles hospitality center is also home to a dedicated 1,800 square-foot art gallery with rotating exhibits featuring local artists. The Gallery is open during tasting room hours and from now until April 2nd, the Gallery is featuring a Chinese brush painting exhibit titled The Dancing Brush by the Central Coast Brush Painters. The exhibit will feature both paintings and calligraphy done on rice papers in the traditional Chinese manner. An Artists Reception will be held on February 4th from 1 to 4 p.m. and will include the presentation of art works by the artists, wine tasting and light appetizers. This event is complimentary and open to the public no reservations required. The winery is also holding a Valentines Day dinner this month. On February 14th, a four-course Latin Riviera-style dinner paired with wine is being held at the Estrella restaurant located in downtown Paso Robles. The dinner is $80 per person or $70 for Signature Club members and reservations are required. Guests will receive a special surprise gift as an added touch to a romantic evening. This is an excellent opportunity to try out one of Paso Robles hot new restaurants. For another food and wine treat, on February 11th from noon to 4 p.m., a Harris Ranch beef pairing will be offered. Harris Ranch will prepare New York steak with their chefs favorite seasonings. Guests will be able to taste the different flavors and learn how they pair best

with Vina Robles wines. The winery also offers a Saturday Live Series every other Saturday with complimentary music in the tasting room from noon to 4 p.m.. On February 11, 25-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist Nataly Lola will be performing her distinctive folk-jazz repertoire coupled with her lyrics and melodies. Then on February 25th Tony Harmon, an internationally recognized concert guitarist who has performed on concert tour, on numerous television shows and in special events across the globe will be providing entertainment. He composed and performed the musical soundtrack for ABC televisions The William Randolf Hearst Story and performed at the Western White House for President Ronald Reagan. SORT THIS OUT CELLARS

Daring To Be Different
BY miCHael CerviN Sort This Out Cellars recently released Elvira, Mistress of the Dark line of wines and sodas.

SORT THIS OUT CELLARS open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. sunday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and saturday 1636 Copenhagen Drive, solvang www.sortthisoutcellars.com | (805) 688-1717

Every winery wants to stand out from the competition. For Sort This Out Cellars, even the name tells you this is going to be a different experience. In an attempt to avoid the corporate homogenization of consumer culture, as owner and winemaker Michael Cobb puts it, he has created a unique and expressive wine tasting room in the popular Danish village of Solvang. And the wines here are different too, including their recently released Elvira line of wines. Yes Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, has her very own Macbrenet, a full-bodied, blood-red Cabernet Sauvignon sporting Elvira in a seductive pose in front of a spider web. Sort This Out Cellars is handcrafting and distributing a full line of California-based wines for Elvira beginning with a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. But its not mere gimmickry. Elvira works closely with Cobb and is involved with all aspects of the winemaking process, including the selection of the grapes, blending decisions, art direction

14

and even marketing. The only thing Im not doing is stomping the grapes, Elvira says. The wine retails for $25 and it might seem as if this is the perfect Halloween gift, and it is, but Elvira is popular year-round and so too is the inaugural wine. Elvira showed up for the release party, as did throngs of her fans. Currently, the wine is available through our website and tasting room and a few retailers in Ojai and Los Angeles, Cobb says. In addition to the wine we also just rolled out a line of vintage soda pop for her. Weve been doing the soda ourselves for about a year now with World War II era pin up girls on them. And the Elvira soda names reflect a sense of play with labels like, Lemon sLime and Silent sCream Soda. Other new wine releases on the horizon include Casino Vineyard Rhne, a blend featuring artwork by Fullerton, California tattoo artist Robert Adams. Its a tongue-in-cheek take on our lack of vineyard type labels and the fact that we love Las Vegas. Cobb says. He has also just released Vino Nostra, a tip of the hat to the prohibition era with wine that reminds us that government restrictions are still a real issue. For over thirteen years the wine industry was effectively shut down by Prohibition. In basements and hidden locations across the country, small wine producers continued to make wine for themselves and friends, perfectly legal under the law at the time. Some were as bold as to sell their wines to speakeasy operators in their own towns. We honor the spirit of the underground vintners who carried forward the tradition of American winemaking during the darkest hours of Prohibition, Cobb writes on his blog. We did two different labels for this speakeasy-like secret wine, he mentioned. One has the bootleggers who produced the wine and the other label features the mobsters who distributed it. Its a take on the mafia term Cosa Nostra meaning, this thing of ours. Therefore Vino Nostra loosely translates to This Wine of Ours and Cobb has bottled it in stubby bottles resembling jugs, imported from Italy. Clearly there is a diversity of wine to be had at Sort This Out, from Merlot to Syrah to Viognier and Chardonnay, nothing is off limits. And the concept is also different in that Cobb does not own any vineyards. I tried to take all that I felt was wrong with wineries and turn that around, he says. And clearly he has hit on something. There is an enduring allure with wines and wineries that celebrate a specific sense of time in our collective history. Sort This Out has created an homage to Las Vegas, a pin-up 1950s era sensibility. This is clearly evidenced in the tasting room, all decked out in chrome and red leather, a fun, funky and hip place to be. Our tasting room is definitely different than anything else in Solvang, Cobb says. They are also the latest tasting room open in town. Friday and Saturday nights they offer live music which gives both locals and tourists something to do when sleepy Solvang rolls up the streets at dark. Our vibe is different, our hours are different, our outlook on wine tasting differs, and we just want people to have fun with the wine tasting experience, Cobb says.

FOLEY WINE ESTATES

Flocking to Foley
BY miCHael CerviN

FOLEY WINE ESTATES open Daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 6121 east Highway 246 lompoc, Ca 93436-9679 www.foleywines.com | (805) 737-6222

William P (Bill) Foley II has come a long way from his West Texas . Panhandle, cattle ranching roots. The former head of Fidelity Financial and current Chairman of the Fidelity Board of Directors wanted to create a legacy for his family. So in 1996 bought what is now Lincourt Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County. Next he created Foley Estates Vineyard and Winery, located on 480 acres, of which about 240 are planted with vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara. Foley Estates produces classic and highly regarded Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But Foley also has purchased other wineries and now owns over 25 different brands. His acquisitions follow Foleys hands-off approach for each of his wine brands, while still demanding impeccably high standards, and he allows each and winery to showcase their individuality. But it is his epony-

mous winery which seems to always steal the show. Focusing on predominately Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Foley Estate consistently produces some of the best wines in the now-booming Santa Rita Hills. We now have all of our 2009 Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays available to taste and purchase in our tasting room, says hospitality manager Jesse Barter. That is six different Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays coming from Rancho Santa Rosa, Bar Lazy S, TAnchor, JA Ranch, Barrel Select and Two Sisters, the various labels with the Foley Estates portfolio. If youre a fan of these varieties you need to know they offer three different tasting options. There is their regular tasting which offers a selection of both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for $10. They also have an all Chardonnay tasting for $10.00, and an all Pinot Noir tasting for $15.00. But if you really want to treat yourself well, they offer a private wine and cheese pairing for $20.00 per person. This tasting does require at least 24 hours advance reservations and sells out quickly. Barter says. Having sampled this tasting myself, its truly a luxurious experience. Our wine and cheese pairing starts off with a glass of our Steel Chardonnay. Your host will then guide you to an exclusive setting where you will sample six of our wines with artisan cheeses and breads. This is an experience not to be missed. But there are other wines as well at Foley including Pinot Grigio, and a dry ros and bottle prices range from $18 to $75. But someone has to make all these wines of course and that task falls to winemaker Leslie Mead Renaud. I am very excited to be working with several hundreds of acres of world class vineyards with Foley and Lincourt, she says. They encompass two different appellations and an incredible array of climates. The soil profiles, clones, and rootstocks contain many different parameters than those I have dealt with previously. This enables me to work with many different flavor profiles that will give many exciting blending options. Also, the later ripening fruit allows for greater complexity, she adds. Like most winemakers, her philosophy is to show the best expression of the vineyard possible, and to manipulate the fruit as minimally as she is able. She spends lots of time in the vineyard throughout the year, and makes daily trips to the vineyard during harvest to determine when the fruit is ripe and ready to pick. I dont inoculate for primary fermentation or for malolactic fermentation so that the difference between individual vineyard blocks is more apparent, she says. This is not to say that I am a non-interventionist. I believe in using as many analytical techniques along the way as possible which allows me to correct a situation before there is a problem, rather than having to take drastic steps to correct one after the fact, she adds. And by the looks of it, there arent problems as Foley wines continue to reap accolades. And people flock to Foley not only for the wines, but the beautiful 3,500 square foot tasting room is located amongst a sea of vines. For those who have not been inside our tasting room over the last few months we have some changes inside as well. We have installed our new gas fireplace, so it makes a great setting to come and sip some wonderful wine in front of our fireplace during the winter, Barter notes. And on the calendar is their annual Chuck Wagon Brunch on Saturday April 21st from 10 a.m. to noon. This event is the same day as Santa Barbara County Vintners Festival and makes a great start to a day of sumptuous Santa Barbara wines. It is held on the Rancho Santa Rosa Property, in front of the tasting room.

Everything from the vineyard to the bottle is discussed with a barrel tasting offered in the caverns. The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes. The hospitality center also offers several settings to enjoy a picnic. The Garden Terrace, overlooking the vineyards provides caf seating, while the bocce court area offers picnic tables under the trees. The two regulation bocce ball courts, created old world style with crushed oyster shells, are available for guests to enjoy. The winery does recommend making a reservation if you are planning a group outing to use the courts. Throughout the year, the winery hosts events at the hospitality center. This Valentines Day, February 14th, the Meritage Room will be transformed into a Spanish dining and dancing room for una noche de amour a Spanish evening of love. Guests will be entertained by Spanish guitar music as well as a Flamenco dance show by Cuatro Caminos. After a tapas-style dinner paired with Robert Hall wines, guests will have the opportunity to join the professional Flamenco dancers on the dance floor. The all inclusive evening is $95 per person or $85 per Cavern Club member. Reservations are required, so if you want to treat your sweetheart call (805) 239-1616 ext. 24 or visit the winerys website to purchase tickets on-line.

Always on the brink of technology, Tolosa is one of the first wineries on the Central Coast to develop its own iPad app. Tolosa is well known for its exciting social media interactions, interesting winery blog and innovative winery events. Each bottle of Tolosa wine now has a QR code that can be scanned by smart phones. Once the QR code is scanned, Tolosas website will appear on the smart phone and displays a page relating to the bottle of wine that was scanned. The consumer can learn everything there is to know about that bottle of wine within a couple of minutes. Social and interactive media have had a large impact on the wine industry throughout the last several years. The attention and use of these types of media by wine enthusiasts grew exponentially in 2011. To keep ahead of the game, Tolosa launched an iPad app, developed by Jack Dugan of Orange Club Media, in January 2012. The interactive program can be downloaded from the app store free of charge. The Tolosa Winery iPad app encompasses everything from tasting notes and technical information for Tolosa wines to information about upcoming events and wine club releases. Most importantly, the app features a special offer which changes throughout the year. For example, the app currently offers a gift certificate for $75 which customers can purchase for only $50. These offers are only available through the Tolosa Winery app. iPads are used by individuals around the world. Tolosa decided to tap into this market to

interact with current customers and to attract a group of potential new fans. Inside the Tasting Room, located on Highway 227 in the Edna Valley, Tolosa displays an iPad which customers can use to experience the app. The program is extremely vibrant and user friendly. Wine drinkers of all backgrounds will have a great time exploring the technical notes on the wine that is in their glass. Guests can take advantage of the special offers and plan their next trip to Tolosa based on news from the app. iPad users who are not able visit the Tasting Room will feel almost as if they are there. The app presents beautiful photos of Tolosas estate vineyards and an informational video about the winery. Undoubtedly, these

iPad users will long for a glass of Tolosa wine after exploring the app. Thankfully, the program includes a map which finds a retail wine shop or restaurant carrying Tolosa wines closest to the user. Tolosa Winery is also a partner in the Central Coast Winery app. This enables iPhone users, who do not have an iPad, to access a few key features of the Tolosa Winery app, including the special offers. Tolosa is sure to lead the way in this new age marketing tool as other local wineries are sure to follow suit. To experience this latest technology, use your iPad to download the Tolosa Winery app, your iPhone to download the Central Coast Winery app, or visit the Tolosa Tasting Room and make sure to check out the iPad! WINE COUNTRY DINING

THOMAS HILL ORGANICS
by Carolyn Turner
Good food builds good community. Thats the mantra of Thomas Hill Organics, and its one to which owners Joe and Debbie Thomas are deeply committed, as they serve the Paso Robles community through both their farm and bistro. Joe and Debbie met at the Santa Barbara County Vintners Festival, and at the time Joe was teaching art at Santa Clara University and Debbie was a key accounts sales manager for Adidas in Los Angeles. They married and were quick to realize their shared love of good food and good wine. They dreamed of one day moving to wine country, and in 2004 they purchased the perfect home in the eastern hills of Paso Robles and began to make that dream into a reality. Thus Thomas Hill Farms was born as they planted every last spot of the 10acre property with 900 fruit and nut trees, a small vineyard of Italian varietals, and an assortment of raised bed lettuces, herbs and garlic, and seasonal row crops like tomates. Everything is grown organically and farm tours are given by Joe by appointment only. As the land began to produce, Joe and Debbie developed a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, where members of the community can sign up for a T-Hill Basket that includes an assortment of produce straight from their farm to you. The program begins around May and runs through October. But even with this program, Joe and Debbie found themselves with a surplus of fruits and veggies, and were quick to realize that there were no other farm-to-table restaurants in town. So in January 2009, they opened Thomas Hill Organics in downtown Paso Robles. Chef Julie Simon was quick to join the team, and with her Parisian upbringing and California-honed culinary skills, she brings a fresh and unexpected explosion of flavor combinations to the cuisine. The menu changes weekly depending on the season and their wine list heralds an amazing line-up of locally produced wine. You may choose to enjoy your meal in their intimate indoor dining room, or outside on their beautiful outdoor patio. The whole ambiance is reminiscent of dining at a quaint European caf, surrounded by ivy cascading down brick walls, a gently trickling fountain and an outdoor fireplace. If you can make it, Monday nights feature Burgers and Beer, and Wednesday nights are Wine Night. But no matter when you visit, youll likely be greeted by Debbie as she ushers you to your seat, where youll enjoy a truly unique and farm-fresh dining experience that will make you feel right at home, and leave you dreaming about when to make your next visit.

clones an hour and a half away from Lemont in Michigan. After realizing that this was not going to be the ideal place to grow quality wine grapes, Roger and Cheryl set their sights on California. In 2000, The Janakus purchased Journeys End Ranch on the Westside of Paso Robles. Today, Stanger Vineyards produces only about one thousand cases of luxury wine from ten acres of fruit. Varieties planted include Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Stanger Vineyards focuses on making varietal-specific wines which truly reflect their unique micro-climate on the Westside of Paso Robles. The vineyard features coastal climate, fossil soils and 1500 feet of elevation. In addition to meticulous vineyard management and artistic winemaking, each Stanger Vineyards bottling is held until the wine is at its peak before being released to the public. The wines are designated library reserve to present this additional aging process. Stanger Vineyards 2007 Tempranillo is a local favorite and received a 90 point rating from James Suckling. The 2006 Syrah is an excellent example of a Westside Rhne wine. Bold and spicy with the right amount of dark berry fruit, this wine is showing beautifully right now. ORIGINAL ROADHOUSE GRILL

BY CarolYN TUrNer

When you walk into the Original Roadhouse Grill, youll immediately feel at home and comfortable, even if your home does not boast a mouth-watering grill menu, full-service saloon, satellite horse racing or lets you throw your empty peanut shells on the ground. The Original Roadhouse Grill in Santa Maria opened in May 2000 as part of an American Family Steakhouse concept developed by Los Angeles-based brothers and restaurant entrepreneurs, Larry and Ralph Cimmarusti. Their goal was to create a restaurant known for a casual, fun, family atmosphere and hearty meals. To date, there are eleven Roadhouse Grills throughout California and Oregon. The Original Roadhouse Grill prides themselves on an extensive menu that features favorites such as slow-roasted bourbon tri-tip, fall-off-the-bone baby back ribs and hand-cut steaks from highquality USDA beef from Washington state. All steaks are grilled over mesquite wood and are generously seasoned with a special blend of spices. All of our steaks are freshly hand-cut daily in-house to ensure the highest quality, said Vice President of Operations, Linda Bryant. We also grind all our own burgers from our steak trim, so theyre actual steak burgers. There are also several steak alternatives including (but not limited to), Whiskey River salmon, BBQ chicken, turkey and veggie burgers, and an entire menu section dedicated to bison steaks, ribs, meatloaf and burgers. While you wait for your entres, all guests are served freshly baked yeast rolls served with homemade honey butter. Also make sure you try the extremely popular and unique Texas Egg Roll appetizer cream cheese and jalapeo-filled wontons served with jalapeo jelly, and the featured mini-desserts are a must, served in small mason canning jars for only $1.99 each. The Original Roadhouse Grill offers a range of choices for diners of all ages and appetites, with a section of the menu called a little

less dinner for smaller portioned meals under $11.99, more than 20 menu items under $10, and children eat free every Tuesday night. There is also the Grillmasters Program, where diners can join online and immediately receive a $10 off coupon for enrolling, as well as specials and discounts that are good at all Original Roadhouse Grill locations. For those diners over 21, the saloon features specialty cocktails served in Mason jars and a selection of twelve draught beers from local breweries such as Firestone Brewery, as well as their signature Peanut Tap Handle beers. Happy hour features a selection of food items for $5 everyday from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. This past October also brought a new and exciting addition, completely unique to the Santa Maria location. The California Horse Racing Board approved Original Roadhouse Grill as an Off-Track betting facility to replace the former location housed at the county fairgrounds, said Bryant. From Wednesday through Sunday, racing fans can enjoy the new Official California Wagering Facility in a separate bar dining and patio area. More than 26 televisions will show horse races from around the world. Our goal is to provide an exciting and comfortable environment for horse racing enthusiasts while retaining ample room in the restaurant for our bar and dining guests who have no interest in the sport, said owner, Larry Cimmarusti. We have always considered our restaurant to be a casual family friendly environment and we are confident that watching horses race can be exciting entertainment even without the wagering component. The Original Roadhouse Grill is located at 1423 South Bradley Road in Santa Maria. They are open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Coghlan Vineyard & Jewelers
For three generations the Coghlan family has earned high esteem in their jewelry business. In 2009, Eric and Samantha Coghlan turned their discerning eyes to production of ultra-premium wines from the unique and distinguished appellations of the Santa Ynez Valley. Eric and Samantha source Pinot Noir grapes from acclaimed, single vineyards in the St. Rita Hills appellation, as well as Bordeauxand Rhne-variety grapes from their own estate, which is in the process of becoming organically certified. Their rigorous vineyard sourcing from quintessential wine-growing regions is the basis of their flavorful and complex wines. The new year brings with it a lot of excitement for the Coghlans. This year will be their first harvest from the newest portion of their vineyard, which has been planted to Grenache Blanc, Grenache, Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. They are excited about how the new varieties on their vineyard will transform their current estate portfolio of wines. Eric is particularly enthusiastic about their newest planting of Grenache, which they chose to plant in the old world style of head trained. They are also extremely passionate about the metamorphosis to farming organically and hope to become certified soon. Eric and Samanthas first estate Cabernet will be bottled this year along with a fun venture into the dessert wines, a Cabernet Port. With the Coghlans unique take on all aspects of both the jewelry and wine that they make, expect nothing less than a big surprise.

Palminas part in this philosophy is to craft wines that are a key part of that equation; to provide wines that can be enjoyed everyday and that complement and enhance a wide range of food styles. Owner/winemaker Steve Clifton lives by this philosophy in his effort to vinify the wines of Palmina. We produce solely Italian varietals from Santa Barbara County, California. We found that the climate and soil types in our own Santa Barbara County are similar to those in our adopted Northern Italy. Another parallel is that Santa Barbara County features a unique transverse mountain range, running from east to west that funnels oceanic influence into the valleys. The Alaskan current runs along the Pacific coastline until Point Concepcion where it juts in and pushes the cold air into the valley. Morning maritime fog rolls in slowly and finally meets the warm desert air flowing from the east and the Los Padres National Forest. These unique areas of microclimates Piemonte, Friuli and Santa Barbara County feature cold air pushing warm air to create growing conditions that provide enough sunlight to help fully develop fruit flavors, and cool night temperatures that maintain the grapes natural acidity levels, and which allow Steve to create food wines with a balance of fruit, tannin and acid. Visit the tasting room in the renowned Lompoc Wine Ghetto, where you can experience Palmina wines for yourself featuring the world-class Nebbiolo, grown at unique microclimates located around Santa Barbara County. Palminas tasting room is at 1520 E. Chestnut Court, Lompoc and is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.
