MONTICELLO VINEYARDS
Corley Family Winery
BY Michelle J. BAKer
The year was 1969. Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon; the New York Mets were on their way to their first National League pennant; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was topping the years box office sales. And an intrepid young Midwesterner, yearning to answer the call of his ancestors, was scouring Napa Valley for the perfect piece of land on which to plant the family flag. Now, on the eve of Jay Corleys 81st birthday, he looks back at his 40+ years in the Napa Valley and looks forward to the next generations taking the reins of the Corley Familys Monticello Vineyards
Jay, Stephen, Chris and Kevin Corley

an 80-acre prune orchard at the southern end of Napa Valley. He liked the propertys proximity to the cooling breezes of the San Pablo Bay and the fact that it sat next to the Napa River. I didnt think of being on Highway 29 to capture visitors, I wanted to be on the river because I knew access to water would be essential. Once the property was cleaned up, Corley didnt cut corners planting the vineyard. We used all of the new technology coming out of Davis. We tested the soil everywhere, and we drilled holes in the ground to see how the water was flowing. Then we planted the vines closer together than most people were doing in those days to stress them.
decided he would rather drown in wine than sea water. He worked in the cellar under other winemakers for 13 years before he earned enough stripes to become head winemaker in 2002. Now the three brothers form a harmonious management team at Monticello. Three of them is better than one of me, says the senior Corley.

Just in time for Valentines Day, Sonoma Countys Kendall-Jackson is encouraging visitors to enjoy a Wine & Dessert tasting, where their roster of dessert wines are matched up with sweets. On the menu are such pairings as their 2009 Vintners Reserve Riesling with Coconut Macaroon; the 2009 Vintners Reserve Muscat Canelli with a classic Mexican Wedding Cookie made from roasted pecans, orange zest and plenty of butter; and two Passion Fruit French Macaroon cookies with a milk chocolate ganache served with the Late Harvest Riesling There is also a rare 2006 Late Harvest Chardonnay served with an Almond Frangipane with Lemon Fennel Mousse, or try the classic pairing of chocolate and Port, with their rich Grand Reserve Port matched with Valrhona Bittersweet Chocolate. This tasting is offered all day, every day, and no reservations are required for six people or less. But then, food has always been an important part of the winery experience at Kendall-Jackson, from seated food and wine pairings and culinary garden tours to their wildly popular Tomato Festival held annually that always brings sell-out crowds. The internationally famed winery was founded by Barbara Banke and her late husband, Jess Jackson. Both successful attorneys, they used their skills, attention to detail and love for fine wine and food to grow the winery into one off the nations most successful wineries. Starting with humble beginnings the company added state-of-the-art wineries, a wine center with beautiful grounds and a friendly tasting room, while they carefully expanded their vineyard holdings, increased the labels they owned as well as the varietals they incorporated into their wines. They also have a small but very tasteful tasting in nearby downtown

BEAULIEU VINEYARD
Legendary Rutherford Winery Celebrates Heritage in the Newly Opened Museum and History Tour
by Alexandra Charsley
It seems logical that Beaulieu Vineyard would open a new Heritage room to celebrate their long history of producing great wine. As more people are turning back to their roots, they have embraced this tradition and thats what makes them a destination winery. I have been drinking Beaulieu wines for as long as I can remember. Their big, bold reds always deliver and happen to be my favorite. Their tasting room experience now offers so much more than tastings and winery exclusive information, but also a piece of their enduring legacy. In 1900, Georges de Latour founded his winery with the vision of creating worldclass Cabernet Sauvignon from the exceptional terroir of Rutherford. In the century since, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet as well as one of the most collected American wines. The first Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted with grapes from the 1936 vintage by Andr Tchelistcheff, who tasted the wine in barrel and insisted on giving it an independent bottling. Today, this wine is widely considered the standard bearer of fine Rutherford Cabernet, with deep fruit character, silky tannins and impressive aging ability. This legacy honors the marriage between state-of-the-art technology and gentle, traditional winemaking methods, a combination that enhances the expression of their remarkable vineyards.
BEAULIEU VINEYARDS BV open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1960 St. helena highway, St. helena (707) 967-5233 | www.bvwines.com

Their new Heritage Room is a tribute to their beginning, their ability to survive during Prohibition, and to become a top producer of rich, classic Napa Valley wines. The original 1885 stone walls house the museum and the original beams were preserved. Guests will be the first to see the interesting array of historic pieces they have collected over the years; ranging from original winemaking equipment to sales ledgers from the postProhibition era showing that their Private Reserve once sold for $1.01 per bottle. We found this great collection of amazing pieces of our history stored away in an old warehouse. As much as we embrace new technology and innovation, our history is also what sets us apart and will capture the interest of curious visitors. We are very excited to finally be able to invite the public to come see what weve dusted off in our new Heritage Room, Graham Jones, Beaulieu Vineyard Hospitality Manager. They recently celebrated the release of the 2008 vintage of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This marks the first vintage to be made 100 percent out of their new state-ofthe-art winery dedicated solely to Georges de Latour Private Reserve. In 2008, under recommendation from legendary consultant Michel Rolland, Beaulieu Vineyard created a winery within a winery to produce their flagship wine. After more than 60 years of sharing space, BV's Georges de Latour Private Reserve has gone private with the recent completion of its own, new 9,600square-foot micro winery. Having a brand new state-of-the-art winery is a dream come true for a winemaker. This facility helps me to achieve complex yet balanced wines that reflect the true character of our renowned vineyards, says Director of Winemaking, Jeffrey Stambor. Twice daily Historic Tours are being conducted and include a Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Tasting in the Heritage Room for $20 per guest. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through their website at www.bvwines.com. The tour also allows guests to visit their historic Redwood Tank room where they will get to take in the wonderful beauty and aroma of their 75+ year old redwood wine tanks. Then, you are invited to taste the acclaimed wines that are such an important part of Napa Valleys past and present. While here, visit the Georges de Latour Reserve Tasting room and try the new 2008 release. The Reserve Room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features their entire Reserve Wines including the Library Collection with wines dating back to 1970.

There are a variety of ways to see the wine country of Northern California. If you are a visitor you can rent a car at the airport; if you are a local you drive yourself in your own car or go with friends and make one of them the designated driver. For the hardy (or foolhardy) you can hop on a bicycle. Or, and this is without doubt my first choice, you can call 1-800-387-2328 and let Beau Wine Tours & Limousine Service arrange for absolutely everything. Founded in 1996, this local company has worked hard to deliver each of their guests excellent customer service. We started as a corporate transportation company fifteen years ago, said Tom Buck, company president (and noted Wine Educator). But over time weve transformed the company into a fully dedicated destination tour service. And, I would also add that we are fully capable of handling any type of group, from a honeymooning couple to the corporate groups that gave us our start. Today, they operate a fleet of spotless and mirror-polished black vehicles that are a frequent sight on area roads and at wineries, both large and small. Their roster of available vehicles is certainly impressive. They range from Town Cars, top-level Mercedes Benz sedans, executive-level SUVs, and impressive stretch limousines, to shuttle buses, spacious custom vans and beautifully outfitted coaches for
large groups, whether it be friends and family here for a special occasion, or a business group numbering in the dozens. Adding to the attraction are the companys drivers. They are required to take a three-week course before they even meet their first customer. This training period is not limited to just vehicle operation, either. It includes a comprehensive curriculum that makes accomplished drivers into very knowledgeable tour guides and sources of information and local lore. Driver training includes learning local history, geography and general winemaking and winery comprehension. Most of them have invaluable personal ties with winery owners, winemakers and tasting room personnel. They may even throw in some local gossip (lets call them stories, it sounds more dignified) and little known facts you can share with your friends when you get home. And not by any means least of all, they are friendly, personable, appropriately conservative and unfailingly accommodating. Also, you are encouraged to ask questions. The driver/guides enjoy sharing their thoughts and are more than happy to answer any questions, and as they say, There is no such thing as a silly question. Helping you understand this area and its two major attractions fine wine and excellent food and exceptional scenery as well, is why we are here, and why you, we are sure, are here as well.

One of the most popular offerings the company has is the unique Napa Valley Daily Wine Tour. Bring your friends, or if you are traveling alone, perhaps on business or just to get away from it all, bring yourself, and meet your other limousine-mates. The tour includes the vehicle and driver of course, but it also offers a picnic lunch, complimentary sparkling wine, a pick-up in the Napa area between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., and a visit to four boutique wineries, some of which may very well be new and unknown to you, but not to your driver. The only costs not included are the nominal tasting fees. It is, honestly, one of the best bargains here among the vines and villages of a beautiful region. Other offerings on their menu of great experiences is the hot air balloon and wine tour package, one of their many unique and memorable experiences. Or, if you enjoy wonderful food almost as much or more (is that possible?) than world-class wine, you might want to consider the VIP Dinner Service. Youll begin with a sunset drive in a stretch limousine with complimentary Champagne on the way to a very special culinary evening, and you can relax on your ride home. The company will be happy to make restaurant recommendations and reservations for you. Other options include a luncheon or dinner at the winery where a favorite wine is produced, and a meal carefully chosen to pair with that wine. This could range from a box lunch at a scenic country vineyard to an elegant four course meal in a wine cave. They can also arrange for the winemaker to be on hand to guide you through the wines crafted at the winery that are paired with each course as well as wine and food pairings, barrel tastings, sensory seminars or a wine blending workshop. For another option in a long list of unique possibilities there is the Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley, available for Cable Car Wine Tours and private charters. But what is it, exactly? Its a self-powered, hand-built replica (using blueprints from the late 1890s) of one of the vintage California Street cable cars San Francisco is famous for. The view from this comfortable and classic open-air cable car is unmatched, and passengers can become immersed in the wine country scenery as they relax and enjoy the tour. For large events, either private or corporate, it is all simply a phone call away. As an added convenience, Beau Wine Tours also offers airport or city pick-up and drop-off service. What it comes down to is if you want to concentrate on your trip to Sonoma or the Napa Valley, this one phone call can make all the difference. In Napa, the phone number for Beau Wine Tours is (707) 2570887. In Sonoma they are based at 21707 8th Street East and the number there is (707) 938-8001. Or, you can make it even easier and simply call their toll free number, (800) 387-2328 and their reservationists can make whatever arrangements you might need. It is also worth going onto their very comprehensive and easy-to-use website: www.beauwinetours.com. It really can be quick, easy and friendly one stop shopping.

ACACIA VINEYARD
Great Times in Carneros All Spring Long!
BY JoSh Stein
ACACIA VINEYARD open by appointment only: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m. 2750 las Amigas road, napa (707) 226-9991 x2 | www.acaciavineyard.com
The wine business is really very simple. If youve got great grapes, you dont need to over-work the result. At Acacia Vineyard, which was founded in 1979 less than two miles from San Pablo Bay, theyve got one hundred and fifty acres worth of great grapes which have produced world-renowned Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for more than three decades. And as members of the Carneros Wine Alliance, Acacia has taken the lead in making sure Carneros stays a place which will always produce great grapes. What else would expect from the one of the few wineries getting it right about Carneros from the start? Indeed, Acacia was one of the first to recognize the Carneros regions potential for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the winery was also a forerunner in vineyard-designating their wines because of the lot-by-lot methodology it has employed for its fermentations. Rather than homogenizing the grapes or juice, each vineyard block is made separately and goes into its own barrels, allowing time and cellar conditions to do their magic before any decisions are made about bottling this helps to preserve the uniqueness of each vintage and the specialness of the particular vineyard in the glass. Youll probably recognize those vineyard names: St. Clair Vineyard, which has produced single vineyard wines since 1979; Beckstoffer; Lone Tree Vineyard; Sangiacomo and Winery Lake Vineyard.

Wine Tasting in
SUISUN VALLEY
If this is one of your many visits to the wine country, you are no doubt looking for something a little different. So why not change things up and take the road less travelled through Suisun Valley The Napa Back Road. We all no doubt have our favorites, but we are always looking to one up our friends back home. Yes, that never ending search for something new and refreshing, but still preserving all that made you first fall in love with the whole Wine Country Experience. If you are staying in downtown Napa, do you realize you are just approximately 15 to 20 minutes away from a valley that preserved what Napa was in the 1960s? However, the wines at such places like Vezer Family Vineyard and the Blue Victorian Winery take advantage of both the old traditions, such as 100% hand punched down wines, along with implementing the important new techniques learned from those great California winemakers over the last 50 years. This Suisun Valley has been a long-time held secret in the wine country. In fact, many of the locals try to continue this secret, simply because it is where they go to still experience those old feelings of days gone by. Suisun Valley is where you can find wines that would sell for over $150 a bottle at the popular better known tourist destinations in Napa, for $30 to $60. These same wines have 94, 95 and 97 point rankings and medals from the greatest national and international competitions!

One Vineyard, One Wine, Made Right: David Fulton Winerys Petite Sirah
David Fulton Winery, a historic Petite Sirah producer, announced the two newest accolades to be given to their 2008 Petite Sirah, Old Vines, from their St. Helena Estate: The first silver medal was awarded at the International Womens Wine Competition: A partnership of Vineyard & Winery Management Magazine and Women & Wine. Women & Wine connects with over 50% of the wine industry from winemakers to winery owners, public relations, sales and marketing teams, winery associations, writers, bloggers, website owners and more in the US and around the globe. Women tend to choose and buy eight out of every 10 bottles of wine drunk at home*. Thats why this competition, judged entirely by women, was conceived in 2005. A second silver medal was awarded to David Fultons 2008 Petite Sirah at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The 2012 event has set a new American wine competition record with an astounding 5,500 entries. For nine consecutive years, this prestigious competition holds strong as the Largest Competition of American Wines in the World. Bob Fraser, SFCWC Executive Director, says We are thrilled that wineries all over the United States understand and respect the outstanding caliber of our 65 judges from throughout the wine industry and the country. We have one vineyard and make just one wine here at David Fulton Winery. Our total production is only around 400 cases a year. (The Valleys largest winery produces 9 million cases a year) We handsort our grapes three times before fermentation and have a three year aging program before release. Says Stephanie Trotter Zacharia, DFWs Director of Winemaking If youd like to visit, were proud to not only pour a couple of vintages of our Petite Sirah for you but also pour Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and a Riesling style wine called One Last Kiss from our neighbors Scott & Jana Harveys winery. Their worldclass wines are otherwise not available for tasting here in the Valley. The 2008 Old-Vines Petite Sirah holds true to previous releases of elegance. This vintage provides a wider range of bright, high-tone fruit flavors emanating from the expected deep, dark color of the varietal. We found pleasing aromas of blackberry, fig, cinnamon, dark bakers chocolate and licorice along with flavors of red cherry, boysenberry, raspberry, and distinct vanilla on the palate. With soft tannins, this is a round, velvety, silky wine that will not need much cellaring to enjoy. The David Fulton Winery 2008 Petite Sirah is grown in the historic St. Helena, estate vineyards planted in 1860. David Fulton also built the towns first stone wine cellar under the winery next to it just one year later. He also invented the famous Fulton One Horse Plow. This exact location is where the wine is still made today in much the same way. The vineyard and winerys current owners are David Fultons greatgrandson, Fulton Mather and his wife, Dink. The grapes are picked each year and sorted along with wine club members, friends and family, by hand before fermentation. The fermented grapes are then pressed out in a traditional basket press and the wine aged for nearly three years in thin-staved French oak barrels. The resulting wine is consistently highly acclaimed among their peers and a favorite referral among Petite Sirah fans. David Fulton Winery & Vineyards is located at 825 Fulton Lane, just four blocks east of Hwy 29, in Napa Valleys historic St. Helena. Visitors are invited to the winery any Friday through Monday from 11 to 4 for tasting. Other times may be available by appointment. They offer in addition to two vintages of the award winning Petite Sirah, tastings of Our Sweet Petite, a port style wine. All have very limited productions. You should note that the winery doesnt have any commercial signage, so youll have to look for the address (825 Fulton Lane) to enjoy the winerys private setting! *According to Vinexpo 2009 survey, women choose and buy eight out of every 10 bottles of wine that are drunk at home. Women and Wine, a study of 4,306 women in France, Germany, the UK, Japan and the US, was carried out between January and March this year among the readers of Decanter and Livingetc magazines. The research was commissioned as part of a regular annual survey by Vinexpo, the worlds largest wine and spirit exhibition.

Chef Richard Reddington Opens Redd Wood
Acclaimed chef of Michelin-starred Redd presents casual, wine country pizzeria
Acclaimed chef Richard Reddington of the Michelin-starred restaurant Redd, recently introduced his latest venture, Redd Wood. Centrally located in the idyllic town of Yountville, the highly anticipated Redd Wood is a casual wine country pizzeria featuring wood-fired pizzas and pastas and a locally diverse and approachable wine list, amid a contemporary, industrialchic design. Former Redd chef Jacob Kossman joins Reddington in Redd Woods open kitchen to present an approachable, daily-changing menu focused on wood-burning oven-baked pizzas, house-made pastas and seasonally-inspired side and main dishes. Sample menu items include warm olives ($5); romaine, anchovy, lemon, garlic, crouton ($10); pizzas such as: oregano, garlic and chili (no cheese) ($10); fresh mozzarella and basil ($11); prosciutto cotto, Brussels sprouts, tellagio, red onion ($14); sausage, broccoli, chili, pickled peppers ($15); and pastas including: pappardelle, rabbit, savoy cabbage, parmesan ($16); and lamb bolognese, arancini, tapenade ($18). From the dedicated charcuterie room comes Redd Woods house-cured prosciutto and salumi. As with Redd, winner of a Michelin star for six consecutive years, Redd Wood reflects the dedication of a chef who, after spending 15 years in some of the best kitchens in the U.S. and Europe, has found the ideal balance of serious food and unpretentious environment. Named Rising Star by San Francisco Chronicles Michael Bauer in 1998, and Best Rising Chef by San Francisco Magazine in 2003. At Redd Wood, Chef Reddington teams up with highlyregarded St. Helena-based interior designer Erin Martin of Erin Martin Design to create a decidedly unique wine country restaurant. Layering raw elements of unfinished stone, steel, glass and wood, Martin creates texture while providing a warm, neutral color palette. All boldly-scaled, custom-fabricated pieces sit side-by-side, one-of-a-kind salvaged objects for an overall design that is simultaneously modern rustic and comfortable. In the dining room, which seats 40, exposed, rich cocoa-colored wooden lathe lining walls, mismatched chairs and curious found objects create an impression of spontaneity and a comfortable, relaxed ambiance. Tufted leather banquettes and provocative hand-written quotes inscribed surreptitiously throughout the space inspire comfortable conversation among dining guests. A central white stone wine table anchored from above by a large brass-dipped buoy draws focus to the thoughtfully-curated wine list created by master sommelier William Sherer. Focusing on interesting, approachably-priced local wines, Redd Wood also offers a larger, more encompassing reserve list upon request. Redd Wood is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Redd Wood is located at 6755 Washington Street in Yountville. For more information, visit the website at www.redd-wood.com or call (707) 299-5030.

Collage Retrospective by Douglas DeVivo at the Charles Creek Tasting Room & Gallery
Fun and colorful are words often used to describe the unique works of local artist Douglas DeVivo whose retrospective of 15 years as a collage artist is currently on display at the Charles Creek Tasting Room & Gallery. I paint with paper, says the artist, creating depth and shadow from bits of written text, old illustrated technology and slivers of our personal history. My process is quick and instinctual; there is something meditative about cutting and laying paper. Time just flies away Beyond the surface appeal that encourages comfortable engagement with each piece, the viewer will find layer upon layer of depth, complexity and ever-changing perspectives. The early work, DeVivo observes, is so different; I was into furniture making at the time so most are boxed (three dimensional). Over
the years the work has become more open, more emotional and visually complex. These collages hit you on so many different levels. Each one has a rich visual history; they bring back memories. You can look forever and never see it all! Douglas DeVivo lives and works in Jenner, California. This show will run through March 31, 2012. Specializing in high quality Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (as well as microscopic quantities of Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Sangiovese and Tempranillo) from great vineyard sources, Charles Creek Vineyard produces wines that are fruit driven , food friendly and easily paired with the courses of a meal. The winery Tasting Room is conveniently situated in a charming 1890s era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza. In addition wine tasting and sales, the Tasting Room also provides space to show the work of local artists. The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery, open seven days a week from 11 a.m. 6 p.m., is located at 483 First St. West, on the historic Plaza in downtown Sonoma. St. Francis Winery & Vineyards Announces the Promotion of Sonoma County Winemaker Katie Madigan
St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, a pioneer of ultra-premium Sonoma County winemaking, having recently announced the retirement of winemakers Tom Mackey and Dennis Borell, is pleased to introduce Katie Madigan as its new Sonoma County Winemaker. Weve had a very important changing of the guard here at St. Francis, Winery President and CEO Christopher Silva said. This is the next generation of winemaking at St. Francis. Upon the retirement of Tom Mackey and Dennis Borell, weve put into place our young, but incredibly talented all-female winemaking team to continue our legacy. As our Sonoma County Winemaker, Katie Madigan will work closely with our Artisan Winemaker Heather Munden as we continue to focus on 100% hand-picked, Sonoma County grapes in every St. Francis wine. It is all about quality and this is an exciting moment for St. Francis Winery. Indeed, we intend to use this moment. Madigan majored in chemistry at UC Santa Barbara and first joined St. Francis as a harvest intern in 2002. In 2004, she became a full-time lab technician at St. Francis and furthered her knowledge of wines by studying Enology & Viticulture at UC Davis. She Katie Madigan was promoted to Assistant Winemaker in 2006, concentrating on Chardonnay production and championing St. Francis night-picking of its Chardonnay fruit to preserve its most delicate qualities. Madigan had been elevated to Associate Winemaker in 2010. Guests are invited to visit St. Francis Winery & Vineyards and enjoy the taste of Sonomas bold-flavored and fruit-forward wines, as well as the winerys acclaimed daily wine and food pairings prepared by St. Francis Executive Chef David Bush. TREASURE ISLAND
Treasure Island Flea to Move Indoors the Historic 1939 Worlds Fair Building for the 2012 Winter Months
Treasure Island Flea becomes the TI Flea Pop-Up as they move indoors for the winter months January through March. The inside venue will allow the show to go on rain or shine and is being held in the historic, One Avenue of the Palms building located on Treasure Island. This is the last standing and useable building from the 1939 San Francisco Worlds Fair. The TI Flea Pop-Up will be held the last Saturday and Sunday of each month with later show hours beginning at 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day. The first show will be January 28-29. This is the only two-day monthly show in Northern California and the first to move indoors for the winter months. The TI Flea is a hybrid marketplace that hosts artists, indie, etsy and steampunk designers while also including the more traditional vendors, exhibiting vintage, antiques and collectibles. Not only are you going to experience great shopping but also the best SF gourmet food, wines and local upcoming bands. When we started this market we knew we were going to have to produce a show of shows to get 8,000 to 10,000 attendees out to Treasure Island. Most Bay Area residents have never had a reason or even knew they could go out to Treasure Island. I cant tell you how many people have approached me and have said how easy it was to get to the island and how beautiful Treasure Island is. It only takes ten minutes from downtown San Francisco and the muni 108 runs every 20 minutes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, said, co-founder Charles Ansanelli. As we move forward to our second year we look to add even more unique shopping, DIY classes, entertainment and new specialty foods, like a seafood grotto with live lobsters and shell fish. The sky is really the limit, as we are on an island oasis with all the room in the world to expand and continue to make this the show where you are sure to experience the unique, cool and unusual, said co-founder, Angie Ansanelli. Show Dates for the 2012 Indoor TI Flea Pop-Up Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days February: 25-26 March: 24-25 Treasure Island is a 400-acre, flat, manmade island that was artificially constructed in 1936-1937 for the San Francisco Worlds Fair hosted on the island in 1939.

McGrails Cabernet Reserve Best Red In Sweepstakes at S.F. Chronicle Competition
BY lAUrA neSS
Livermore Cabernet has bested the lot of em more than 3000 entries to take Best Red bragging rights at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Competition. Kudos to winemaker Mark Clarin for this outstanding achievement, and one of which every Livermore Cabernet lover can be proud. The 2008 Livermore Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve ($36) outscored its way to the top through a thick field of Cabernets, including submissions by a dozen other Livermore wineries and strong competition from big Napa names. Among other Livermore locals bringing home the bacon were Bent Creek, who won Best of Class for their 09 Cabernet and Cuda Ridge, who scored Best of Class for their 09 Merlot. Wente scored gold for their 07 Merlot and Best of Class for Syrah under the nth degree label. Thomas Coyne, too, brought home Best of Class for their Quest Rhone blend, at $24, a veritable steal. Darcie Kent scored Double Gold for her 2010 De Mayo Chardonnay, while McGrail took home silver for their Livermore
Valley Chard. It was pretty much heigh-ho silver for Charles R, Stony Ridge, Nottingham Cellars and Wood Family Chardonnays. Concannon did not disappoint in the realm of Petite Sirah, bringing home gold for the 2008 Livermore Valley Captain Joes Reserve. They also took Gold for their 2010 Chardonnay, 2008 Syrah and 2008 Mother Vine Cabernet Sauvignon. Cuda Ridge and Nottingham scored silver for their 09 Livermore Valley Cabs in the $30 to $35 category, and the 08 Steven Kent Livermore Valley Cabernet scored silver in the $40 to $49 category. In the over $60 category, Wente brought home silver for their 09 Livermore Valley Cab, and so did Concannon, for their 2007 Heritage series Livermore Valley Cab. In Bordeaux blends, Muriettas Well scored silver for The Spur, while Crooked Vine scored gold for their 09 Moxie blend, with Retzlaff tagging a bronze onto their 2005 Cab/Merlot blend. The 09 Conjugation from Fenestra took silver. In other reds and blends, Concannon scored silver for Crimson & Clover, Tamas Estates appropriately got a double gold for their Double Decker and Bent Creek scored silver for their 2009 Red on Red. In the Zin category, both Charles R and Wood Family came away with golds. Silver for the 09 Crackerbox. Both Fenestra and Longevity scored silver for their Tempranillo. A very respectable performance all around. Way to show em, Livermore!

Acacia Vineyard
The Acacia system has been developing since vines were planted in Carneros. Long before any grapes have been crushed, attention to lots of details has to have taken place; meticulous pruning, careful canopy and cluster management, planting beneficial cover crops within the vineyards, and constant monitoring of all facets of the vineyard environment are required to produce the best grapes. Once judged ready for picking, every lot is harvested and sorted by hand only perfect grapes go into Acacia Chard, Pinot or any other wine. The winemaking is equally as detail-oriented, focusing on gentle handling and extraction, by-hand punch downs for reds and barrel fermentations for whites. The tasting room next to the winery is, naturally, the best place to try these wines and see the winemaking in action, and the enthusiastic staff are happy to pour their best, accompanied by some of the best views in the Valley. Acacias Pinot Noirs exhibit seductive flower, tea, and fruit aromas, and they showcase layered fruit flavors complimented by spice notes. Equally, Acacias Chardonnays show off opulent aromas of fruit and citrus, and oak is used only as accent to generous fruit and spices. In addition to several different vineyard-
designated bottling of these classics, the tasting room also pours other exclusive releases, which include Sauvignon Blanc and Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Viognier. Dont skip these they show off what happens when winemaker Matthew Glynn gets to play a bit. Even with all of the above, its their events which make Acacia our current tasting room of the week, and this springs Carneros fun doesnt disappoint! Saturday, February 11th brings the Mardi Gras Luncheon, focused on great festivity and a whole lot of merrymaking in combination with wine and a menu full of New Orleans classics like crab cakes with remoulade, Shrimp n Grits, Jambalaya and sweet cornbread muffins. Equally, the weekend of March 9th to the 11th brings the March Madness Barrel Tasting Weekend, and theres nothing like barrel tasting as it gives access to the wines before theyve been finalized in the bottle! The good times dont stop there, though, as Sunday, March 25th delivers the Pizza & Pinot Party, and Saturday, April 28th displays local, fresh and sustainable products in the Farmers Market Lunch. Each of these events shows why Acacia knows its stuff: fun times, good food and great wines. Go taste for yourself and youll agree. Enjoy!
Alderbrook Winery
comfortable atmosphere perfect for hosting corporate and special events. The long tasting bar spans one side of the room. Behind the bar, youll find tasting room personnel who are friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. In my humble opinion, they have good reason to be enthusiastic, because the wines at Alderbrook are excellent and reasonably priced. I tasted a bunch of wines during my visit and loved them all, but I only have room to write about a couple, so here goes 2007 Estate Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley ($28) This is one spicy Zinfandel! Aromas and flavors of black pepper, baking spices, ripe blackberry and mocha abound, all wrapped up in a smooth, juicy mouthfeel. In a word, yum! 2007 Zinfluence (Zinfandel-based blend, $32) This delicious wine reminded me of the holiday season in a glass aromas of gingerbread, orange peel, spice potpourri, plum and blackberry continue as flavors in the richly textured mouthfeel. Alderbrook just released its 2009 Pinot Noir not only in the winery, but for distribution across the continental U.S. ($32). Its been eight years since we last distributed a wine. We think this Pinot is worthy of the honor, says Benjamin Downing, Floor Supervisor. Its very fruit forward with essence of strawberries and cherry cordials; high acidity with a spicy mid-palate and long finish. Along with the excellent wines, Alderbrook Winery offers a generous selection of jams, mustards, sweet treats, gift items, including art by local artists, logoed clothing (hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, etc), servingware, glassware, books and toys. Come sit by the fire with a glass of your favorite wine and play a game of chess, checkers, cards, dominoes or cribbage. If the weather is nice, step outside and play a game of corn hole, bocce or bring your dog and play in the backyard.
Visit Alderbrook Winery take your time, enjoy some fabulous wines and maybe do a little shopping. Youll be glad you did!
