Grant Funds New iMac Lab For Teens

Now teens have a new computer area available just for them at Rowan Public Library Headquarters in Salisbury! Three new iMac computers have been purchased thanks to a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant awarded to RPL through the State Library of North Carolina. Middle school and high school students (ages 11 17) can log themselves on to the computers for a maximum of two hour-long sessions a day. In order to use the computers, teens will need an RPL library card in good standing and parental permission for Internet use on file. The iMac lab includes a scanner and plenty of productivity software for teens to create and explore. Childrens services staff are available to help with

Vietnam Exhibit Moves to RPLs China Grove, Rockwell Locations

A picture is worth a thousand words, according to Fred Barnard and his quote comes to mind when viewing Through a Soldiers Eyes: Remembering Vietnam, the award-winning, collaborative exhibit between Rowan Public Library (RPL) and Waterworks Visual Arts Center (WVAC). The photographs are those that were shown at WVAC from August through November 2011. Beginning in January and continuing through the end of February, select photos will be on display at the East Branch and South Rowan Regional Libraries. Visitors can view photographs taken by local veterans who

Friends Support Library Programs and Services

Thank you if you have already renewed your membership for 2012. If you have not done so, please consider renewing by using the membership application on the back page of this newsletter. Why join the Friends of Rowan Public Library? Don Schumacher explains why: Being a member of the Friends is an honor for me as it allows me to associate with dedicated volunteers who work unselfishly for the benefit of the library and the citizens of our county who take advantage of all its wonderful services. I volunteer once a year to help with the Friends book sale normally held in early November. I really enjoy watching the smiles of children who purchase armloads of kids book and seniors who stock up with bags of reading entertainment for the long winter. We have an award-winning library and your membership allows us to continue this tradition of excellence. RPL Director Jeff Hall and his staff do a wonderful job and we as Friends of the Library are people who value public library service and who volunteer to help their library. Such volunteerism is evident in the preparation of literary gift baskets. These popular items were originally sold only in November and December but are now available throughout the year. Our volunteers who work to make this possible include Susan Waller, Amanda Harwood, Gavine Pitner, Fran Burding, Sammie Hinshaw, Sherrill Strother, Pat Wayne, and Carol Smith. Sales of these baskets have allowed the Friends to raise over $3,000 this year in support of our library. The hard working individuals who make this possible would appreciate other volunteers to come onboard. over 300 children submitted entries. We also continue to provide funds for staff to continue their education as they pursue a higher degree. The Friends funded the Summer Reading Program for children and teens. In the words of Jeff Hall: The summer reading programs sponsored by the Friends of the Library are the largest programs that promote reading in all of Rowan County. Betsy Rich is another member of the Friends who volunteers her services to the library: I have always loved reading. I am a voracious reader as evidenced by my membership in two book clubs. Ive just got a love affair with books. When asked why she volunteers with the Friends book sale she has this to say: Im just interested in being with other people who promote reading and the library and I look forward to working with people who love the library and books. Please join Don, Betsy, and the rest of the members of the Friends as we continue to support our excellent library. Dale Basinger, President Friends of Rowan Public Library

The year 2011 was a memorable one in our librarys history because we celebrated our centennial with concerts and special events such as the big June celebration complete with ice cream and entertainment for over 300 people who attended. Friends of RPL helped with financing these events. We continue to help RPL by providing funds for the Stories by the Millstream storytelling festival which served over 1,500 second graders in the county. Our Bookmark and Teen Book Cover Contests were popular again this year as

served in Vietnam. Additionally, a DVD with veterans photos and oral histories will be available for checkout. While we will not be adding to the traveling exhibit, we are still collecting scans of photos, stories and copies of other items to archive in the history room. If you would like to participate, please call Paul Birkhead at 704-216-8241. Beginning in March, the exhibit will be available as a traveling exhibit for libraries, museums and veterans centers. To schedule, please call Gretchen Witt at 704216-8232.
