Getting a ticket usually doesnt mean good news, but in the case of the Strathmore-Wheatland Addiction Teams (SWAT) Positive Ticketing programming it does. The Strathmore-Wheatland Addiction Team has embarked on a project thats catching on in the Alberta area, over what they call building youth assets, said Cpl. Duane White with the Strathmore RCMP. The goal is to have the enforcement people in town here catch young people doing good things, and reinforce that through the positive ticketing campaign. The RCMP and municipal officers are given the ticket books, with the goal of catching youth in the act of being a good citizen. It could be anything from helping somebody across the street, or bike safety or anything like that, its really just positive actions in the community, said Sarah McKinnon with SWAT. Most of the ones were for bike safety but theres other ones for cooperating in a police investigation and helping them out, anything positive. McKinnon, a Grade 10 Holy Cross Collegiate student, joined the team in October. Her role with SWAT is to make the follow up calls to the parents and families and ask what they think of the program, if they have used the ticket, if it affected their child in a positive way and if they think it should remain in the community. She said she is most often hearing that the parents are quite excited by it. The kids will come home excited and talking about getting a ticket and the parents at first dont know the positive side of it. There are also rewards for being caught in the act, such as a free pass to Jumphouse Gymnastics, The Aquatic Centre, The Family Centre, a Dairy Queen Blizzard and more. A majority of the so-called offenders are between the ages of seven and 13. Continued on Page 2

Sparking the imagination of young minds

The elementary students from Standard School had a fun filled day visiting the newly opened Spark Science Centre in Calgary on Jan. 30. There were many different hands on exhibits to take part in. The kids thoroughly enjoyed The Human Body, The Animation Department, and innovations & engineering just to name a few. The couple of hours that were spent there flew by and many kids are planning on returning with their families. it was a perfect opportunity for kids to try things hands on to see what kinds of jobs they could see themselves in for the future.

Take ACTION Against High Premiums

Most often the stolen vehicles are not found as they are either re-sold or stripped for parts. If your vehicle is on the criminal wish list then expect your rates to be higher under the Comprehensive/Specified Perils section of your policy. The higher the risk, the higher the price. Take Action to reduce rates, get answers and the service you deserve.

Scots Celebrate
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor If Robbie Burns were alive in 2012, he perhaps would have produced an independent CD or been a YouTube star. In 2009, a poll on Scottish Television (STV), voted him the greatest Scot of all time. In his time, he was thought to be a radical, a liberal and socialist, upholding the rights of the common man and the poor. In his songs and poems he often made fun of royalty and challenged the power structure of his time. In later years, his words were used in fights for equal rights. As a famous celebrity, his life is remembered worldwide by Scot descendants. On January 27, 2012, Burns was remembered in Strathmore by over 150 people in the Civic Centre. His fame has grown like a snowball, since his death. It gets bigger and bigger, said Worshipful Brother (WB) Rob Clark, a member of the Masons, who gave a biographical tribute to Burns called Immortal Memory. Other dignitaries included WB Eric Dousou (Gleichen #36 Masons), WB Larry McKinley and his wife (Strathmore #53 Masons) and The Grand First Principals of Alberta (MEC Jerry Kopp). Piper Gary Thurston piped in the haggis, as well as playing tunes later in

the program. There were various toasts including one to the haggis, with and without Scotch whiskey. Haggis, tasting somewhat like dressing, was accompanied by roast beast, tatties and neeps (potatoes and turnips), peas, buns, and pickles, and cake for dessert. Many wore a flash of plaid and some wore full Scottish dress. The Burns Club Singers rounded off the evening with a chorus of Scottish songs. Many caught up with old friends and made a few new ones wishing them well with a goodbye verse. May there always be work for your hands to do; May your purse always hold a coin or two; May the sun always shine on your window-pane; May the hand of a friend always be near you; May your heart always fill with gladness to cheer you.

Recognizing the positive youth

Continued from Page 1 My goal is to get more knowledge of the positive ticketing program for sure to start, just so people know about it and know that kids can get caught for good things around town, said McKinnon. I think that would be a good starting point just to start the program because the whole initiative of the Strathmore/ Wheatland Addictions Team is to minimize addictions and make Strathmore a better community, and so I think the positive influence on the youth might keep them away from stuff like that. Its a change of mindset for us too, were focused on enforcement and often take for granted when you see positive things, said White. The expectation is that the tickets will be consistently handed out over the duration of the program, which has no end date in sight. At last count approximately 120 positive tickets have been handed out since the programs inception.

Pennies for MS
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Setting their sights high, the staff at the Strathmore A&W have begun their newest campaign, A million pennies for MS. The Multiple Sclerosis Society is the charity of choice by all A&W locations, and every year the Strathmore location tries to outdo itself. After finding out their store was fourth in Canada for MS fundraising, the staff and management knew they could do better this year. We raised almost $8,000 last year, and we didnt really feel comfortable being fourth when we knew we could do so much better. We figured kicking it off with a $10,000 fundraiser was the perfect way to start this year, said manager Will Whatley. Last year we did a coin drive, we went door to door through some of the areas, just asking for spare pennies, something that one of my young lads thought of. Just over the weekend we raised almost $900 in pennies. While brainstorming fundraising ideas, the staff realized that people often have pennies sitting around which helped form the idea of collecting a million of them for MS. Im hoping to reach this goal in probably two months, I want to have my staff going door to door through the weekends, said Whatley. A portion of the proceeds, 50 per cent, will be going directly to the MS Society, and the other 50 per cent is going to help Debra Grouwstra build a wheelchair ramp at her home. Whatley said he had heard about Grouwstra from one of his former supervisors, and was told she had to spend most of last summer confined to her house because she was unable to make it up and down the stairs. She was looking for funds to build a ramp so I figured wed tie it together. Half the funds were going to raise will go then to the MS Society and the other half will go to re-

building the front of her house so that she has an access ramp to be able to get in and out of her house, said Whatley. They (the staff) are all pretty excited about finally getting it going and really trying to make a difference, especially now that were going to be able to make a difference in someones actual life as opposed to just giving money to the foundation. Fundraising has already begun, though Feb.1 was the official kick off. There are two coin jars at either side of the tills in A&W where people can donate their pennies, or any other spare change. A number of other fundraising events will take place later in the year, including a flea market, street hockey, the Kiddie Carnival and of course MS day on Aug. 30.

Another check off the bucket list

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Finally completing and publishing the childrens book he had written a few years ago is just one more thing Strathmore resident Cory Johnson can cross off of his bucket list. The book, Sunny Days, the flower with the difference, follows the story of Sunny the sunflower, who is different from the other flowers in the garden, and the blue eyed girl who was created to look like Johnsons daughter Emma. One of the reasons why I choose flowers is because it doesnt really relate to anybody or any race or colour. Flowers are not discriminating in anyway, and everybody likes sunflowers, said Johnson. I dont know what exactly is out there on differences, I didnt do a lot of research, I just know its something that we need to learn to celebrate and work together to realize that a difference is okay, and how we offer each

other all this stuff. Sunny is distraught because he is not like the other flowers, and he feels he needs to be more like them. The story illustrates Sunny realizing his differences are what make him special, and that he does have a lot to offer to the garden. Johnson is a motivational speaker who has Cerebral Palsy, and has never let it get him down. Johnson is also a full time father, Kiwanis Club Governor Elect for Western Canada and is currently training to compete for a spot in the Paralympics. The main thing with my speaking is turning disabilities into possibilities, thats what its about is seeing the possibilities in people, even though Sunny is not disabled hes just different. I believe we are all born normal and we are born exactly the way we were meant to be, said Johnson. It gives you a moral that no matter how different people are they can still fit

in, you dont have to judge based off of looks, said Brendon Berry, Johnsons son. Berry feels the book is like a replay of the speech only for kids, and said the speech alone had already made an impact on him and how he views other people. Johnson is still working to shave a little more time

Bow Valley College through the RiSe network provided a video conference session on financial aid options for online studies at BVC and budgeting tips on Jan. 25.

Agencies work hand in hand

Need to know about financing for Bow Valley College (BVC) online and part time funding but cannot get into the city to get the details? BVC and Marigold Library are collaborating to bring the information to rural residents through interactive video conference sessions, shared between several participating libraries, and taping those sessions so residents can access the information at any time through the RISE website. It is very time saving and is convenient for potential students as they dont need to wait to make an appointment to have some of their questions answered, said Stacie Baker, lecturer on Student Financing and Budgets. There are four sessions in all: Intro to distance learning ran Jan. 18th, Student Finance ran Jan. 25th, Career Exploration Techniques ran on Feb. 1 and Essential Online Skills will take place Feb. 8th. Response to these will determine the effectiveness of the initiative and break paths for future use of video conferencing through the Library system, perhaps in course content delivery and tutoring. If people are interested in viewing these, the Strathmore Library has the ability to link into the sessions, but you must call ahead of time. All sessions and posters are also available for download at http://www.risenetwork.ca. Michelle Toombs, Director of Marigold Library, noted the network is very accessible as it can access all types of hardware interfaces, whereas something like Skype is reliant on the other party having Skype as well. She noted one of the other advantages is that it can be designed for groups of people. A large screen makes for easy viewing and can simultaneously post the presentation, the speaker and audience on one screen. If there are technical difficulties there is on-site staff, or staff at Marigold head office can link in and solve technical issues. Toombs said patrons have successfully used videoconferencing for meetings, medical consultations, distance education, as well as personal growth and lifelong learning opportunities. For example, RISE facilitated a conversation between local farmers and the Agriculture Canada Research Station, thus exchanging valuable information while saving time and money. Also, women business entrepreneurs in and around the town of Strathmore held a videoconferencing session with a business leader in Colorado. English Language Learning students in Nanton and Hanna connected with offsite instructors. Worldwide locations such as Hawaii and Australia have been accessed. The Library system itself has saved more than 5,000 hours of travel time and reduced their carbon footprint by not travelling more than 225,000 kilometers. Jesse Traquair of the Strathmore Library encourages everyone to book the facility. There hasnt been a high interest to date, but that is largely due to awareness. Those that have used the system have been blown away by its capabilities, said Traquair. Strathmore Library can accommodate 69 to 165 people depending on room setup. He said people do not have to be members to utilize the system, but would need to call ahead to book the equipment and room. Staff would be on hand for setup and technical help. There is some information such as dialing strings that users will need to make connection, but Traquair will advise users of those when they book. For more information call Jesse Traquair at 403-934-5540.

More Than Just Great Fish!

Groundhog Day
The groundhog, often called a woodchuck, is the only mammal to have a day named in his honor. The groundhogs day is February 2. Granted, its not a legal holiday; nobody gets off work. But still, to have a day named after you is quite a feat. How did the groundhog come by this honor? It stems from the ancient belief that hibernating creatures were able to predict the arrival of springtime by their emergence. The German immigrants known as Pennsylvania Dutch brought the tradition to America in the 18th century. They had once regarded the badger as the winter-spring barometer. But the job was reassigned to the groundhog after importing their Candlemas traditions to the U.S. Candlemas commemorates the ritual purification of Mary, 40 days after the birth of Jesus. Candlemas is one of the four cross-quarters of the year, occurring half way between the first day of winter and the first day of spring. Traditionally, it was believed that if Candlemas was sunny, the remaining six weeks of winter would be stormy and cold. But if it rained or snowed on Candlemas, the rest of the winter would be mild. If an animal sees its shadow, it must be sunny, so more wintry weather is predicted: The groundhog and badger were not the only animals that have been used to predict spring. Other Europeans used the bear or hedgehog-but in any case the honor belonged to a creature that hibernated. Its emergence symbolized the imminent arrival of spring. Traditionally, the groundhog is supposed to awaken on February 2, Groundhog Day, and come up out of his burrow. If he sees his shadow, he will return to the burrow for six more weeks of winter. If he doesnt see his shadow, he remains outside and starts his year, because he knows that spring has arrived early. Springs arrives on or near March 21, so whether the groundhog decides to return to his den or remain above ground, the sad fact is spring will always have to wait at least six more weeks.

Letters to the editor

Fighting for property rights a major issue

To the Editor I recently attended the Brooks meeting of the Provincial Task Force on Property Rights. I was curious as to how it would be organized, given that Cabinet Ministers and MLAs would be there? What questions would be asked? How was the feedback to be recorded and saved? Most importantly, what type of feedback mechanism would be employed to confirm that attendees had really been heard? More on this later ... Upon arrival, I along with about 100 others were divided into four groups. Each group had a personal recorder and a large paper board and easel to write on. Once assigned, we quickly realized this was not a debate nor was it a meeting where details around government decision-making would be shared and discussed. On the Alberta Government website it is stated (Dec. 19 News Release) under other information that those who comment will not receive a direct response from the Government of Alberta. However, concerns, suggestions and ideas for solutions to property rights will be provided to the Property Rights Task Force, and the information gathered will be incorporated into a Public report to Government. Do you think this will be published prior to the next election? Can you trust it will tell the truth? Now I understand why the Government Officials who were there, did not have to answer any public questions, explain what the bills meant, demonstrate just cause why they felt the need to pass these Bills, or be personally accountable for their actions. Not one of them defended any of the controversial Bills (19, 24, 36 and 50). An odd version of one way communication was the order of the day (they said they were listening but they wouldnt talk to us). I believe they were petrified of what they would have to answer to. The people I talked with said the public consultative process is something that should have been done when the bills were first introduced. Most of the solutions offered by folks in my group were exactly what we have in our Wildrose Property Rights policy. We would repeal Bills 19, 24, 36 and 50 and pass the Alberta Property Rights Preservation Act. I invite you to review our website: http://www.wildrose.ca/policy/property-rights/ It has been said that Democracy is messy. When Party ideology is in conflict with consensus, as I believe it is now, who wins? In Alberta, the PCs win, you lose. For your information, quoting from the Dec. 19 News Release: We arent looking for consensus. What does that say about Democracy as practiced by the PC Party of Alberta? J Patrick Boyer in his book The Peoples Mandate, Referendums and a More Democratic Canada writes about the value of consensus in government: Our system of government depends, ultimately, upon the consent of the people being governed. Canada is not a dictatorship where tyrannical force is used to obtain public acquiescence in the measures and programs of the government. Nor is it a theocracy where we follow the dictates of our leadership because of blindly obedient religious faith. Ours is a democracy where, at the end of the day, there simply must be public consensus about where we are going, and general agreement on how to get there. Without consent the whole elaborate superstructure - the legislatures, the courts, the financial system, the commercial marketplace, the acceptance of laws and norms of behaviour - will corrode until it collapses. This was written in 1992 and I would suggest to you, this describes the democratic crisis we have in Alberta in 2012! The Property Rights Task Force appears to be a classic pre-election smoke and mirrors vote buying performance, paid for by our tax dollars. If you have heard of the shadow banking system, we are now experiencing the pre-election shadow political campaign. As I write this, the PCs are continuing to make promises using your tax dollars. How? By hosting public consultative meetings and pretending to listen. By making pre-election promises without any effort to explain how they are going to pay without going over budget (again). The writ may not have yet been dropped, but the political gauntlet has been thrown. The next election is just around the corner. Are you ready for it? The Wildrose Party is. Days of my life in teaching!

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Every job has its ups and downs, and sometimes people need to find humour in their day-to-day work. In my 29 years of teaching, there hasnt been a day when I havent laughed, and since Im around teenagers all day, laughter has also kept me sane! So I thought Id share some of the strange and funny things that stand out in my memory over the years. I was teaching High School English in a portable, in what is now Crowther Memorial Jr. High. My class followed one of the morning breaks, and as of class time, Johnny (false name to protect him AND me!) was not in class. I asked the class if they knew where he was, and as Ive come to see with teenagers, they casually threw him under the bus! A few replied, Oh, hes still in the parking lot hes in his car, with his girlfriend! Huh, I thought hes late for class probably will be absent and hes in that parking lot, just outside my window! Okay kids, come with me, were going on a field trip! So, I took my whole English class out to the parking lot, and we surrounded his car! Luckily, Johnny and his girlfriend werent doing anything shocking they were just chatting and smoking. He looked around with a stunned face to see all 30 of our faces looking in through all his windows. I cant tell you what word he mouthed, but he was surprised! I motioned for him to roll down his window and said, when it comes to school, we deliver! The end result was that he came back to class with the rest of us, we all laughed, and we even carried on with the lesson. Any time you have teenaged guys in a PE class, sparks can sometimes fly. In one smaller PE 30 class, we were involved in a competitive Floor Hockey game. Im sure we were playing for the Stanley Cup, because two guys got very angry, and started shoving each other, about to fight. I ran over to head off the fight, but one of my Gr.12 guys beat me there. With no hesitation, he said, guys, guys I can sense theres a lot of sexual tension between you two, but Well, needless to say, the fight broke up, as we all burst out laughing, even the two would-be fighters. This one high school student used humour to disarm what could have been a very bad situation, and Ive never forgotten it. In another English class, one of my guys fell asleep. Usually, I like to wait until theyre in a real deep, REM sleep, then I smack the desk as hard as I can. This time though, I thought itd be great if we could all leave him in the class alone. So, we carried on talking, as I set the clock ahead by an hour and a half. I motioned for everyone to head to the door, and we began to file out. Unfortunately, I only got half the class out before he woke up, but he was pretty embarrassed at the laughter he received. The good thing was, he never fell asleep again! Sometimes Id look at him, motion to the clock and the door, and just smile. No words had to be said! One time, some of my students turned back the humour on me! One bright June morning, as I was getting ready to come to school, I opened the front room blinds. Debbie heard me yell something, Im not even sure what I said, as I looked out to see our front lawn. There, perfectly arranged, was some old mismatched living room set, done up nicely as a room on my lawn! It had couches, a chair, table and end tables, and even an old beat up standing lamp! We were stunned, then we laughed, then we panicked, as we didnt know what to do! I called the Town, but they informed me it wasnt Heavy Item Garbage Day and there was nothing they could do! I had to leave it like that for a few hours, while I rounded up guys on spares with trucks, to remove it all. The neighbours enjoyed the show, and I learned first hand how funny, and creative high school kids could be! By the way, a few years later, two newly official adults came up to me at the Station, and admitted to the crime. We all had a great laugh, and I was totally surprised!

Carseland Public Benefit Club

Carseland publiC benefit Club Since 1912 the Carseland Public Benefit Clubs intention has been to augment programs for those in need as well as provide a service to improve community welfare. As a not-for-profit organization, the PB Club exists solely to promote the health, well being, safety, and education of the general population of the Carseland district. For ninety-nine years the PB Club attempts to fill or enhance any void in needed service areas that relate or affect Carseland and its surrounding population. The PB Club is not facility driven, nor sports or agriculturally focused, but has supported a variety of populations within the larger county area (i.e.: seniors, children, maternity, voluntary associations). Historically the PB Club has been for female members only. However this was more due to the fact that the men were either working the land or serving in the armed forces. The division of labor was so much more distinct back then; females predominantly did stitching and cooking. In 1998, open membership was discussed and it was agreed that any community member was welcome to join. There has yet to be a male member. The Carseland Public Benefit Club does have a broad-based membership of ladies living in and around Carseland township. In April 2012 the Club will celebrate their 100th Anniversary. Because their original undertakings included extensive support to the Red Cross (for example: knitting socks for deployed soldiers, sewing bandages and slings, and maintaining a Prisoner of War Fund) they have chosen a military theme to celebrate their centennial. The Club believes the power of future community success lies within our next generation and, in this theme, has invited the Alberta Army Cadet League to participate in their celebration; showcasing their training, discipline and commitment of youth to building our nation. Feature Decade Member Rita Ford 1992-2002 Rita was born in Calgary, Alberta and raised in Langley B.C. Her greatest love growing up was spending time with her horses. In 1973 Rita came back to Calgary where she attended Mount Royal College for two years and took Environmental Sciences. This is where she was swept off her feet by Glen Ford and they married in 1977. They lived in Spring Bank for a year before moving to the Carseland area. With Ritas passion for animals, it was during these first two years of marriage that she travelled to Olds to obtain her certificate in Animal Health Tech. She started working with the Strathmore Vet Clinic and has continued to work there to this present day on and off. Glen and Rita raised their three children Cody, Kyle and Katie in the Carseland area. While the kids were in Carseland School and in sports, Rita played an active role in both. In 2010 they welcomed their first Grandchild, Caleb who lives close by in Speargrass. Rita continues to spend time with her horses, and also enjoys scrapbooking, skiing, traveling, gardening and of course loves spending time with her family. Rita joined the Carseland Public Benefit Club in 1997 and has been a member ever since. She is our present President and also chaired this position back in 1999/2000. She has also held the positions of Vice-President and Casino Chair Person. Rita has been a huge part of our Chocolate Fantasy Night in many areas, but especially the Chocolate. She has found several of our delicious recipies and can always be found in the kitchen prior to and during this event. World events from this decade: 1992 - First Nicotine Patch Invented. PB Club events from this decade: 1992-Several pie plates were purchased by the club so that all pies made by the members for catering would be the same size. All pies were to be cut in 5 equal pieces. 1994 - The PB Club was instrumental in designing and purchasing items for the kitchen of the New Hall that opened in Carseland. 1998 - Meetings started to be held in the Seniors rooms instead of members homes. 2000 - First Chocolate Fantasy Night was held. 2000 - More Trials to the Bow History book was published. 2001 - It was decided that the club would no longer do catering and local showers.

Did You Know?
Groundhogs are one of the few animals that really hibernate? Hibernation is not just a deep sleep, but actually a deep coma, where the body temperature drops to a few degrees above freezing, the heart barely beats, the blood scarcely flows and breathing nearly stops. Insects dont bother groundhogs and germs pretty much leave them alone? They are resistant to the plagues that periodically wipe out large numbers of wild animals. One reason is for their cleanliness. The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 15 lbs and is 22 inches long. Their diet consists of lots of greens and fruits & vegetables.

Reece Kenney Rockyford 4-H Beef Club Report

In todays society, understanding technology is very important, which is why the Strathmore Municipal Library is offering free technology courses over the next couple of months. Jessie Bach will be running the technology courses until the end of March. I have had a few people come in just looking for some basic help, sort of getting stuff started using the Internet and effective Google searching and that sort of thing, said Bach. It seems like everybody got e-readers for Christmas so I have been spending lots of time with people, just sort of helping them get their e-readers set up and learn how to take books out of the library. There are a number of courses being offered beginning in February, and though they are free, some of them do require the participants to have a library card. There is also the option of setting up some one-on-one time for those who dont feel a coursestyle session will provide them the help they need. The big thing with that is if people dont find a course that appeals to them, or if they are a really basic beginner that needs help with a mouse and keyboard and maybe couldnt keep up that kind of thing, said Bach. They could really come in for any sort of computer help they need, my only restriction is I dont do com-

puter repair and I really dont want to mess with any viruses. Some of the courses being offered include using e-readers, e-books, Overdrive, and e-resources. There will also be a getting started course with Microsoft Word, and Facebook for beginners. Career cruising, thats another online resource that we have but its super handy. It profiles a whole bunch of jobs and it gives you tests to figure out what youre best at, like a real life job bank is on there too. Im hoping to get the students out for that one, well see, said Bach. She doesnt teach about Twitter but says she thinks the biggest mistake people make is, they go onto Twitter thinking it is like Facebook and try to find their friends and have conversations. At least for me it didnt work like that. I use Twitter to follow a whole bunch of new sites, like CTV Calgary, CBC, the Calgary Herald and things like that. I also follow a lot of library industry stuff, like all the professional associations and any librarian I can find on there I make sure and follow. Its kind of where I do my professional networking and also news surfing, said Bach. Registering in advance for courses is recommended since there is limited space. More information can either by dropping in, checking out the website at www.strathmorelibrary.ca or by calling 403-934-5440.

Local car club gives back to the community

The Strathmore Fun Runners hosts an annual show and shine every year, and use the funds they raise from their auction item to help out local organizations. This year they presented a cheque for $600 to both the Wheatland Food Bank and the Youth Club of Strathmore. Top: Terry montford (left), Pastor Dawn with the Youth Club, and Shawn Palendat. Bake sale for India

Brentwood elementary Schools Grade 3 hosted a bake sale on Wednesday, Jan. 25 during the block before lunch. The class is raising funds to buy two goats for a village in india. With our social studies program, we have been learning about india and have discovered how disadvantaged many of the children are in this country. many do not even have the chance to attend school! We are trying to be global citizens and help others who are not as fortunate as we are in Canada with our quality of life. The goal was to raise $518. The students managed to raise $479.16 and one father came in and topped up the funds to reach the original goal.

Strathmore and Wheatland Countys newest one stop shop fitness website (www.wheatlandfitness.ca) is almost ready to go, and will hopefully launch by Valentines Day. Im looking for all instructors, so anybody who teaches Karate, Tae Kwon Dowould be beneficial to it, said Tracy Stokoe. Im looking for all ranges, so kids, adult, older adults, everything. Its meant to be a multiuse website thats user friendly to everybody, that they can find out (about) clubs in the area, drop-in classes and registered classes. The website is meant to be a one stop shop for all things fitness and rec-

The Strathmore Theatre players hosted a showcase of talent on Friday and Saturday night at the Theatre in the Strathmore High School to raise awareness of the group and different avenues available in the town for those interested in the Arts. The organization is completely volunteer driven and there are a variety of opportunities for people to get involved. Each production requires a number of people in a variety of roles so whatever your interests, they can always use and grow your talents. A few of the highlights from the evening included a quirky play about courtship, marriage and reconciliation called Canker Sores and Other Distractions; an anthology of plays by American Playwright Christopher Durang, whose vibrant characters included Prunella, played by Laura Bakken, waitress Midge played well by Doug Keeling and Martin played by Mike Ell. One of the guild members, Michael Newton, who MCd the event went on to say that the three actors were similar to a combination of Richard Dreyfuss, Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman. Following this short play the Strathmore Childrens Choir (SCC) performed two pieces called The Jones Boys and Sound The Trumpet led by their Choral Director Loralee Laycock. Laycock directs three separate choirs in Strathmore, Bravo (Kinder-

garten Grade 1), Encore (Grade 2 - 6) and Finale (Grade 7 and up). SCCs mandate is to give all children the opportunity to experience the joy that music can bring in a fun, safe, friendly learning environment. Music touches the hearts of those who hear it in a unique way, and their hope is that the music our children learn through singing in a choir will remain in their hearts forever. Laycock also performed with her two daughters, RaeAnne (10) and Shelby (8) in an acappella rendition of Blue Moon. For more information on becoming a part of Strathmore childrens Choir contact can be made through www. strathmorechildrenschoir.com Guild Members Angela Reeves and Doug Keeling prepared a beautiful duet of the song Lets Call The Whole Thing Off. Their chemistry on the stage through acting was also very evident in their ability to perform in this other genre. Tanya Wolff (Co-Chair of the Guild) gave a dramatic choral performance of Into The Woods, complete with costuming. She was certainly comfortable in her performances as she appeared in a few numbers of both singing and acting. The Guild is always open to receiving new members to come out and have fun in the Arts. For more information about Strathmores Theatre Guild and how you can get involved in a variety of levels please contact them through their website infoplayers@strathmore.ca

Despite picking up only one point on the weekend, the UFA Bisons clinched a playoff berth in the Alberta Midget Hockey League. The Bisons lost 6-3 versus the Calgary Northstars on Jan. 27 (shown here), before posting a 4-4 draw with the K of C Pats two days later.

Rams take on Cougars

The Standard Rams held a game against the Junior high boys team from Crowther Memorial the Cougars. Both teams played hard and the score was close for the entirety of the four quarters. The Cougars pulled a lot of three pointers in their favour but in the end the Standard Rams pulled through with the win of 20 to 17.

Bisons clinch playoff berth

Mario Prusina Times Editor It was a bad weekend on the scoreboard, but a great weekend in the standings for the UFA Bisons. The local triple-A midget team failed to win either of their home weekend games, but managed to clinch a berth in the playoffs by gaining one point in the standings. The Bisons opened the weekend with a 6-3 loss to Calgary Northstars on Jan. 27 at the Strathmore Family Centre, before earning a 4-4 draw versus the K of C Pats on Jan. 29, clinching fifth place in the South Division. Thats the positive I guess, said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen of the weekend. No moving up and no moving down, I think were pretty entrenched in fifth. At the end of the day, anywhere from sixth to third is where we wanted to be you dont have home ice advantage in that first game, but youre going to have to win on the road eventually and weve been just as successful on the road as we have at home. It is what it is and well have to make the best of it weve king of dug ourselves our own spot as far as where were at (by) giving away points. Weve let teams stick around and this is the result and the state weve created for ourselves. No sense looking back at what was, we just have to make sure weve learnt our lesson and get prepared for whats ahead. In the first game, the Bisons struggling power play cost them the win, as they went a disastrous 0-9 with the man advantage. After giving up the tying goal late in the second period to make it 2-2, the Bisons had a five-on-three for a full two minutes early in the third frame that went fruitless. Shortly after, the Northstars scored four goals in the final 7:55 of the game to clinch the win. Its almost like when we get a power play, we slow the entire game down, said Friesen. We dont pay attention, we dont execute plays, we miss guys on the tape (with passes) we think we have all this extra time and space to get added creativity and be the guy to make the play. Well, it doesnt work were not getting the results. Honestly, I think its time to give other players an opportunity and not settle for guys who are not going to do what we want them to do. We cant keep giving the same guys an opportunity for not performing. The Bisons then played their final regular season home game against the Pats, settling for the one point that clinched their playoff spot. Despite going up 1-0, the Bisons gave up three unanswered goals before scoring three of their own. With the 4-3 lead, the Bisons gave up the tying goal with just 2:12 remaining in the game. It ended up in a tie, and to be honest with you, I like the way we played, said the coach. Our power play was better we didnt get the results we wanted to, but our puck movement, attention to detail and our willingness to attack the net was much better. We made four defensive mistakes where our d-men were trying to make plays that werent there and those four mistakes ended up in the back of our net. The Bisons, who have gone 1-5-2 since returning from the Macs Tournament, will finally take a weekend off as the league hosts its annual all-star game. According to Friesen, the break will help the Bisons get rejuvenated for the final three games of the regular season all on the road before the playoffs start. The break is absolutely huge weve been challenging these guys a lot and putting pressure on them, said the coach. It will give them a chance to get away from the rink, focus, recharge and realize how much fun they have when they come to the rink and play this game. I think it will help them out down the stretch here and hopefully we can benefit from it.

Glitter On Ice in Gleichen

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor The Gleichen Arena was filled with many figure skaters of all age groups from Strathmore, Bassano and Gleichen, and their families as they performed their various routines for the packed arena. Before these performances happen there are many hours of hard work, practicing, make-up, costume buying and bundles of nerves from the skaters, parents and, of course, their respective coaches. There is a lot of hard work and a culmination of time and effort put into the performances that happen in matter of a few short minutes. Coach Carrie Lassiter encourages her girls a few seconds before they go out on the ice with smiles and a go do your best, you can do this. She, along with parents waiting in the stands to see the performances of their children, holds her breath while she waits for her students perform their routines well. When the skaters come off the ice, she is just as encouraging to the skaters as she was when they were going out on the ice. A great coach who loves the sport, her excitement spills over into her teaching of the young ladies who dream of being figure skaters. Lassiter says, All the girls skated extremely well, and seemed to all have fun. I am very proud of their hard work preparing for this event. The highlight for me was seeing the smiles on the skaters faces when they received their medals. The organizers all worked very hard to make this day successful. Glitter on Ice grew to 38 skaters this year and we hope to increase again next year. Great job girls. Coaches Leanne Woodcock and daughter Lindsey Woodcock from the Strathmore Figure Skating Club take the sport seriously as well. Lindsey is a figure skater herself, and for many years has enjoyed the challenge of instilling the love of skating in the youngest of girls. Both ladies were proud of their girls accomplishments of the day and look forward to more competitions in the spring.

Over 200 RCMP members laced up their hockey skates Jan. 25 to 27 to participate in the Red Coats for Kids charity hockey tournament. Though Strathmore didnt have enough players to fill its own team, members did play on the Calgary and area team to show their support. The organizing committee gets to choose the charity, so this year we choose the schools in. (In) years past it has been Victim Services, or Boys and Girls Clubs stuff like that, said Vince Olson, with the Strathmore RCMP. Its Red Coats for

Kids and what better place to give money to the kids than schools, that was our thoughts anyway. Over $15,000 was raised for Strathmore schools, which will be disbursed between them to be used in athletic departments. Members came from all over Alberta to play in the tournament. Its good for the community in terms of fundraising, you just kind of say yes we could put it on, and they say yes you can have it. No bid or anything like that, its just a matter of requesting the opportunity to host it, said Olson. It may be a number of years before Strathmore sees the tournament return. Olson said the committee for the Alberta Tournament tries to spread it out so that every community may get a chance to host it if they choose to do so. Next year Whitecourt, Alberta will be hosting the annual tournament.

Kings inch closer to clinching

Mario Prusina Times Editor After winning two out of three weekend games, the Wheatland Kings ultimately won the right to control their playoff destiny. After losing a tight battle to Stettler to open the weekend, the local junior-b team defeated Mountainview and Ponoka, improving their record to 16-17-1-2 on the season. The Kings sit in third in the South Division and need to sweep their final two games in order to remain in that position. Were in complete control of our own destiny right now, said Kings head coach Doug Murphy. If we win our next two, weve got third place wrapped up. Given the run we had with injuries and the losses, thats right where we wanted to be. There is a lot to be determined and it will come down to the last game of the weekend According to Murphy, the first three teams earn an automatic first-round bye, while the fourth and fifth place teams battle in a bestof-three series. The winner of that series would play the first place team, while the second and third place teams would meet. However, with the fourth place Coaldale Copperheads facing the lowly Banff Bears, the Kings need to win both to solidify third place. We feel really good about where we are, described the coach. We had a tough game Saturday night (against Mountainview) that have given us difficulties before and we managed to work our way through that and come out with the result we wanted (3-2 win). According to Murphy, the Kings lost a tough 4-2 battle on Friday night, won at home against Mountainview, then defeated Ponoka 10-2 on Sunday afternoon. The team is now gearing up for a tough road game against their potential firstround opponent, the Cochrane Generals on Feb. 3 (7:30 p.m.). Theyre very well
