Bangerter Crossing on Feb. 9. Five percent of the proceeds that day willl go to our school! Draper Elementary is partnering with Smith's Grocery Stores and joining their Earn & Learn Program. A letter was sent home a few weeks ago that invites you to register your card at your local Smith's. This program requires you to re-register your card each year, but we appreciate your support. Our school will receive 1 percent of all Earn & Learn purchases. All Fresh Market stores in Utah participate in the School Cents program. Parents are asked to turn in their Fresh Market receipts in the box located inside the front door of the school. These receipt totals reflect the donation amount designated for each school.

New High School Gets Name, Mascot, Colors

The new high school opening in Draper in August 2013 has been named Corner Canyon High School. Its mascot will be the Chargers and its school colors will be navy, silver and white.

Fun Run Volunteers Needed

In anticipation of Draper Elementarys upcoming Fun Run fundraiser on June 1, we are looking for individuals who are interested in helping with the run, assembly, or fundraising components of the event. This is an enjoyable event for the entire school, and we would like input from as many families as possible to make it even better. Turn Your Key Be Idle Free

Draper, UT 84020 Ph: 801-826-8275 draper.canyonsdistrict.org Whether youre parked in one of the slots in the parking lot or waiting in the pick-up line, please keep the air around our school a little bit cleaner TURN YOUR KEY, BE IDLE FREE! Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine. Children breathe more quickly and take more air per minute into their lungs than adults do which makes them more vulnerable in idling hot spots. Both drivers and passengers are exposed to higher levels of vehicle exhaust in an idling vehicle than one in motion.

Chinese New Year Celebration

Students in the first, second and third grade Chinese immersion classes performed their Chinese New Year program Feb. 2 for students and their parents. It was wonderful to see how much they are learning and to learn more about Chinese culture and traditions. Utah Jazz Reading Contest Ends Feb. 21

Dont forget that Draper Elementary is participating in the Utah Jazz Be A Team Player Reading Contest. We are inviting our students to read more than they normally do from now until Feb. 21. Only outof-school reading counts and so does the time parents reading with their students. Be sure sign the weekly slips to your teachers. The top 10 schools that read the most minutes per student will earn a Utah Jazz player visit. This is a team challenge and we hope that everyone will actively participate. Let's get reading!

Reflections Winners Advance to Region

Congratulations to the following students from Draper Elementary who have advanced to Region for the PTA Reflections contest: Avery Feurer and Karly Brach, Visual Arts (Intermediate); Hannah Knoop, Photography (Intermediate); Sarah Allen, Dance (Middle/Junior); Gabe Harward, Film Production (Primary); and Maren Holmberg, 3-D Art (Middle/Junior).

Art Through the Ages Volunteers

A special thank you to the many volunteers who teach Art Through the Ages each month. Our students are currently learning about realism and surrealism.

We express our appreciation to Little Dutch Boy Bakeries in Draper for donating sugar cookies for our class Valentines Day parties. We appreciate their continued generosity to our students.

PTA Presidents Message

February is the month of LOVE! Its a great time to recommit ourselves to the ones we love -- our children. I read a great quote that states: The only safety we have in the world for our children is what they build within themselves. We can make restrictions against drinking smoking and pornography, and we can make regulations to guide the affairs of people. We can throw all the protections possible around them, but after all, the thing that holds them in the final test is what is inside of them. Parents: You cannot be replaced. You can help build what is inside your children. You can make them strong by showing your love and support. We, as a PTA, are here to support you and your families and to make sure every child has a voice. The PTA is excited to support White Ribbon Week during the month of February. White Ribbon week's purpose is to increase public awareness of the harm done by exposure to pornography. I read in the Deseret News recently that the best tool against internet porn is AWARENESS. Watch for some emails with suggestions to help you as a family address this horrible disease. Lets do all we can to build what is inside for our precious children at Draper Elementary.
