by Matt Giebler l Senior Minister

MARRIAGES

February is a month of mixed feelings. If youre in love and a romantic at heart, its an exciting time. If youre without that special someone in your life, you may wish for the month to pass quickly. If youre a florist or a chocolatier, you probably look forward to some great business. If youre married and youre a cheapskate, youre in a world of hurt. Our February message series, I Still Do, will focus not on the fickle feelings that inspire pop songs and romantic comedies, but on the biblical purpose and importance of marriage. These days, some want to attack biblical manwoman marriage as narrow-minded and discriminatory toward those whod like to define this relationship in some other way. Some ridicule marriage as a quaint, outdated institution. And we regularly see celebrity couples spend vast sums of money on lavish, ostentatious weddings with little if any apparent regard for what it takes to make a marriage work. But whether youre a young person for whom marriage seems a faraway consideration; an engaged person in active wedding-planning mode; a newlywed still adjusting to being half of a couple; a spouse of several years feeling twinges of domestic boredom; a veteran of decades of marriage; a lifelong single; or someone still hurting from a divorce; this union called marriagethe first human relationship God createdis the most basic building block of humanity. When handled according to Gods instructions, marriages merge lives, meld families, and build legacies. By the same token, when we misunderstand or mishandle marriage, we experienceand expose others tosignificant hurt.

Whatever your marital status, I hope youll join us for this series. Marriage relationships experience attack from many angles, so having support from both biological and spiritual families is a huge blessing to any couple. Please note two great marriageenhancing opportunities that are just around the corner: On Friday, February 10, join us for the Ultimate Date Night, which will combine a delicious catered meal, an excellent Christian film, and some great company. On Saturday, March 10, well host a 9:00 AM-4:00 PM seminar called The Choice for Marriage sponsored by Marriage Investors. See page 2 for more information and visit http://www. marriageinvestors.org. One of the most important ways we go DEEP as a church is by building strong families. And it takes strong marriages to build strong families. Continual work on our own marriages, and support of others, is one of the best investments we can make in showing the love of Jesus to those who come behind us, and to our world. I wont naively suggest that marriage is easy, but I will go on record in stating that its incredibly important, and that I hope youll join me in encouraging, building, and praying for Christ-centered marriages. Yours because Im His, Matt

Sermon Series
February 4This series will offer an honest, practical challenge to the already-married to recommit to building godly marriages, the thinkingabout-getting-married to consider the real-life challenges of marriage, and the skepticalabout-marriage to better understand what marriage is and is NOT designed to be.

Covenant (1, 2, 3)
Genesis 2:18; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Our culture has lost sight of what marriage is, why God created it, and what it takes to make it work. Marriage is a covenant in which a man and a woman each commit 100% to uniting as one before God, and to remaining together with His help.

February 4 & 5

Cooperation
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Our culture is also confused about love. We regularly confuse love with romance, emotion, or sexual attraction. In order for a marriage to last, both partners must cooperatively give themselves to love in the way Godnot Hollywoodcalls us to love.

February 11 & 12

Communication
Ephesians 4:15-5:2 Pauls instructions to the Ephesian church about communicating with love, honesty, patience, purity, forgiveness, and kindness precede his instructions about marriage, and theyre an important foundation for our understanding of marital communication, as well.

February 18 & 19

Commitment
Matthew 19:1-9 Given the relative acceptability of divorce in our culture, its hard for many couples to imagine committing to one another in a no matter what way. While divorce is not the unforgivable sin, God created marriage to be a much more permanent thing than we often treat it as. What would happen if we were to let Jesusrather than advice columns or state law alone speak to this issue?

CSM is looking for student leaders! Crosswalk has now placed its student interns under the new Servant Leadership Program and has added a new component. CSM is now searching for what we call Student Ambassadors. Over the past couple years, our intern program has had tremendous success. However, we have noticed that while we are seeing positive results in our church, we have lost sight of what is happening outside the church. Our Servant Leadership Program is designed to both serve the church and community. While interns will focus on serving inside the church, ambassadors will focus on serving outside the church. Whether you are in band, on a sports team, or working, you will be given the opportunity to lead in the way that will best fit God's call in your life. Joining our Servant Leadership Programs means that you are choosing to embrace your calling as a disciple - to go and make disciples of all nations. Talk to Neil Hinders, GCC's Student Minister to pick up an application today!

(Testimony from Sports Ministry)

My change and growth was gradual as my wife and I became more involved with the church. In the spring of 2006 is when I finally was baptized and became a member of GCC. My wife, children and I have called it home ever since and many have seen that my wife and I can literally call this church our home. When the soccer program was being developed, my wife was on the committee. The first season, she was a director and had talked me into coaching. I loved it. I didnt know much about soccer, but I knew enough to teach the little kids. I stepped up as a director in the league the following season and have been doing it ever since. I truly enjoy this ministry and believe God teaches me more through it than I teach the kids. ~ Paul Weedling is Pursuing

God is working here!

A seed was planted long ago when Rod and Carol Hervey had a passion to work with the kids at Friendly Village Mobile Home Park. What started as a bible study and tutoring session a couple of years ago with two or three kids has grown into a group of 25. Some of these kids worked on the Kids Give Back Project last spring. Lately, the kids bibles were in need of replacing. Through Annette Rawlinsons request to Operation Care, new NIV teen study bibles were purchased as gifts for all of the kids. This week a thank you note came to us: Dear Operation Care, Just want to once again thank you so much for providing the brand new bibles for the teens who live in Friendly Village. I hope you will feel their excitement and appreciation as you read their favorite verses that they wrote for you at last weeks study. Thank you so very much for sharing Gods word with the youth in our community. May you all be greatly blessed by the Lord for your faithfulness in making HIS GLORY known to these teens. In His love, Lorrie Gray, Rod and Carol Hervey, Chet Casper and Steve Clodfelter You donating the bibles to our group means a lot to me. I know it sounds cheesy, but I truly mean it when I thank you form the bottom of my heart. Im in love with the story of Mark 5:1-20 where demons are driven out by the Master. Thank you! Desiree My verse is Romans 2:1 I am thankful for the bible you gave me and have it tabbed already. I hope that the tabs help me get to verses faster. Thank you. Beth My verse is Jeremiah 29:11 Thank you for just your little bit that literally changed my life for the better. Cheyenne 7

Humble Yourselves
Prayer Focus
by Keith Groves Minister of Discipleship

James said, Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up. James 4:10 How humble are you before the Lord? Heres a message written as if God directly speaks to you now...

I have all power, but I am judicious in my use of it. I could have easily destroyed Egypt on the way to freeing my people. But I chose to give Pharoah a choice. His choice was to refuse to yield to me. All of my wonders only made his heart grow harder. I was grieved then, and I grieve now when I see the same hardness in people today. Their pride leaves no room for me - even when I rock their world. Precious one, when situations happen beyond your control, remember that I am sovereign - fully in control of all circumstances. Dont allow pride, anger, or stubbornness to come between us. If you let me, I can help you keep your heart teachable and humble. I always respond to a humble heart.

Acts of Worship
by Eric Radecki l Worship Minister

TEACHING

And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47 ESV i Teaching. We are continuing now with the second direction of worship. The first direction that I covered last month, gGathering, has to do with our entrance into the fellowship together and coming before God. Next, i Teaching, or as its sometimes called, the Service of the Word, has to do with Gods communication to us. With Gods Word, the emphasis is on hearing from God, not learning about God. As Constance Cherry says, The Word is informational in nature (providing knowledge of Gods will and instruction in matters related to the Kingdom of God), but it is formational in purpose (useful for reproof, correction, training in righteousness). Indeed, instruction is important, but in the context of worship, listening to the Word from God and allowing it to shape us is what the teaching is about.

These may seem obvious, but acts of the Word in worship include: Preaching Songs we sing Scripture or Scriptural themes set to music Scriptures read corporately and aloud Simple readings or dramatic readings of Scripture Visual representations of Scripture (on screens, etc.) The Acts 2 passage gives us a glimpse of the early Christians who were attentive to Gods Word (i.e. the apostles teaching). This was manifest in the way they lived out their lives: many wonders and signs, selling their possessions, giving to the needy, glad and generous hearts, praising God, favored by outsiders, grew in number. How do you see these acts of worship represented in this second direction of our worship, i Teaching? As a result of our interaction with the Word? The Scriptures are God addressing us through the Word, not us addressing the Word, lest we be impressed with our skill in handling Gods Word. The Word will always affect us, our behavior and attitudes, if we allow it to do so. Therefore, the next direction of worship we shall discuss, drawn from Acts 2 will be, h Responding.
I am posting these articles, not only in the New Spirit, but on my blog (www.erictunes.blogspot. com) as well. Please follow along, subscribe to the blog, then share your pertinent and well though-out comments, questions, and responses as we go.
