EPILOGUE

1
Three Books: All stories unfold in time. Fashioned as a literary fugue and escaping thus from chronological convention,
this book includes three intertwined, interrelating narratives: the first, the Melody, in the spirit of Faust, unfolds in the future,
the second, the Harmony, in the spirit of Hamlet, refolds—it could be said—into the past, while the third, the Rhythm, in the
spirit of Socrates, recounts the events of a single day. The column width above corresponds approximately to how prominent
(in terms of word count) each book is within the Trilogy. The font size of each chapter title roughly denotes the relative
chapter length.
Melody: As the plot thickens into the untold future, the chapters get longer, the story more intricate. Time becomes compressed
and what begins on the French Riviera explodes out upon the world to Munich, Paris, Bogotá, Singapore, Washington, Kiel, Tokyo,
Kuala Lumpur, Maui, Vienna, Camp David, and the alpine village of Mittenwald.
Harmony: As the plot thins into the retold past, the chapters gets shorter, the story more sparse. Time lengthens reaching into
Tomas’s past back even to his birth, which is marked by a death.
Rhythm: Each hour, the elevator clanks announcing a new student. The scientific dialogue transpires in one place where in one day
the Novum Organum’s secrets are revealed suggesting all this may not necessarily be fantasy.
2
Three Movements: Each movement, approximately the same in length, is comprised of twelve chapters (four triplets).
Grave; Allegro di molto e con brio: The story of Tomas and Max unfolds. Tragedies shape (and are shaped by) Tomas’s past.
Andante sostenuto: Singapore enters the picture. A former Nazi undergoes treatment. The U.S. President has high hopes. Tomas,
graced by the fates, cursed by them, discovers the Novum Organum.
Presto agitato: All hell breaks loose. But love also abounds. Good and evil turn. Courage and infinity are discovered.
3
Twelve Triplets: Each Triplet consists of three successive chapters from the Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm. As the
Melody chapters get longer and those of the Harmony shorter, each Triplet remains roughly equal in length.
