ACADEMIC REGULATIONS FOR IT-COURSES


1. TITLE AND DURATION OF THE COURSES 1.1 The undergraduate course in Information Technology will be called as the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology - B.Sc.(IT) & the post-graduate course in Information Technology will be called as the Master of Science in Information Technology - M.Sc.(IT). The B.Sc.(IT) programme will be of three academic years duration and conducted in six semesters with each semester having an academic duration of 14 to16 weeks. The M.Sc.(IT) programme will be of two academic years duration and conducted in four semesters with each semester having an academic duration of 14 to16 weeks.

2. GENERAL ENTRY SCHEME FOR IT-COURSES 2.1 B.Sc.(IT) Programme a) A student having completed (10+2) or equivalent or 3-year Polytechnic diploma in any discipline can enroll for the 1st semester of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology-B.Sc.(IT). 2.2 M.Sc.(IT) Programme a) Graduates in BCA/BIT/BE/B.Tech./AMIE/B.Sc.(IT)/B.Sc.(Comp.Sc.) from a recognized university are eligible for direct admission to the 1st semester of the Master of Science in Information Technology M.Sc(IT). b) Also, graduates in any discipline other than what is mentioned in 2.2 (a), with at least 6-months IT / computer diploma or 1-year IT experience are eligible for admission to the 1st semester of the Master of Science in Information Technology M.Sc(IT). c) Graduates in any discipline other than those indicated in 2.2 (a) and who have not done any IT or related courses, can get direct admission to M.Sc.(IT) 1st Semester by doing the 6-months Foundation Course concurrently with M.Sc.(IT) 1st Semester or register for the Foundation course separately as a Pre-requisite Course, in the first instance.

3. LATERAL ENTRY & LATERAL EXIT SCHEME FOR IT-COURSES

3.1 Lateral entry to the Second Semester of B.Sc.(IT): Students who have completed 6-months IT or related Course/Diploma after the (10+2) or equivalent or having 1-year IT experience are eligible to take admission to the 2nd semester of B.Sc.(IT). 3.2 Lateral entry to the Third Semester of B.Sc.(IT): Students who have completed 3-years Polytechnic Diploma course in IT / Computers/Electronics or related subjects are eligible to take direct admission to the 3rd semester of B.Sc.(IT). Also, students who have passed (10+2) and 1-year diploma (2 semesters of NIIT are eligible to join the 3rd semester of B.Sc.(IT). 3.3 Lateral entry to the Third Semester of M.Sc.(IT): a) Any graduate with PGDCA/PGDIT or equivalent qualification from a recognized university which is of 2-semesters/1-year duration or b) Any graduate with A Level certificate of DOEACC. or c) Any graduate with B.E.(C.Sc./IT) or MCA or d) P.G. Diploma of minimum 12 months duration of a State Board of Technical Education or a Programme conducted by State Government or Government of India. e) Any Graduate with GNIIT certificate conducted by NIIT is eligible to take direct admission to the M.Sc.(IT) - 3rd semester. 3.4 Lateral Exit Scheme for B.Sc.(IT) & M.Sc.(IT) The IT-courses have been designed with modules of different levels of training at the various semester levels of both B.Sc.(IT) and M.Sc.(IT) degrees. Keeping in mind the terminal dexterity attained by the candidates, candidates are eligible to get Certificates/Diplomas/Degrees by the University at different levels as indicated below: 3.4.1 B.Sc.(IT) a) After successful completion of the 1st Semester of B.Sc.(IT), the student is eligible to obtain a Certificate in Information Technology (CIT). b) After successful completion of the first-two Semesters of B.Sc.(IT), the student is eligible to obtain a Diploma in Information Technology (DIT). c) After successful completion of the first-four Semesters of B.Sc.(IT), the student is eligible to obtain an Advance Diploma in Information Technology (ADIT). d) After successful completion of all the six semesters of B.Sc.(IT), the student is eligible to obtain the degree of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology(B.Sc.(IT)). The student is then eligible to join the 1st semester of the Master of Science in Information Technology-M.Sc.(IT).

3.4.2 M.Sc.(IT) a) After successful completion of the first two semesters of M.Sc.(IT), the student is eligible to obtain the Post-Graduate Diploma in Information Technology PGDIT. b) After successful completion of all the four semesters of M.Sc.(IT), the student is eligible to obtain the degree of Master of Science in Information Technology M.Sc.(IT). The general scheme of admissions including lateral entry and lateral exit are schematically shown below in the form of flow-charts for both B.Sc.(IT) & M.Sc.(IT).

4. MAXIMUM DURATION FOR COMPLETING IT-COURSES

4.1.

A candidate who is admitted to the B.Sc.(IT) Programme has to complete the degree within twice the duration of the course viz. 6 years, from the date of his/her admission. A candidate who is admitted to the M.Sc.(IT) Programme has to complete the degree within twice the duration of the course viz. 4 years, from the date of his/her admission. The above rules apply to both normal and lateral entry candidates.

5. AWARD OF CERTIFICATES, DIPLOMAS AND DEGREES

5.1

Students will be eligible to get their degree certificates of B.Sc.(IT) & M.Sc.(IT) after successful completion of their academic programme. They will have to apply to the Registrar (Evaluation) along with the prescribed fee at the time of convocation to get their degree certificates. However they may be issued a provisional degree certificate, on application, soon after the announcement of the final results.

Students are also eligible to receive certificates, diplomas etc., depending on their eligibility, provided they apply to the Registrar (Evaluation) along with the prescribed fee.

The candidate has to remain in the same elective stream in both the 3rd and 4th semesters as well do his project work preferably in his field of elective specialization. 7. FOUNDATION COURSE FOR M.Sc.(IT) & B.SC(IT) Students who are admitted to the M.Sc.(IT) Degree without sufficient background of IT courses are required to do a Foundation Course for M.Sc.(IT). Regarding the Foundation Course for M.Sc.(IT), the candidate will have the option to register for the Foundation Course along with the 1st semester of M.Sc.(IT) or register only for the Foundation Course in the first instant and subsequently do the 1st semester. The details of the Foundation Course are as follows; CODE MSIT-FC SUBJECTS Basic course on Mathematics Programming in C and Data Structures Computer Organisation System Programming

A pass in the Foundation Course is essential for the above category of students as it is a pre-requisite course. The evaluation includes both Internal Assessment through submission of assignments and the term-end University Examination conducted by KSOU. The university examination for Foundation Course will be a single paper covering the syllabus of all the subjects as given in the foundation course. An examination fee of Rs.500/- in the form of a D.D. in favour of Finance Officer, KSOU, payable at Mysore has to be sent to VET, Bangalore along with the Application for Foundation Course available at the study centres for appearing in the Foundation Course Examination and this should be sent along with the admission form for M.Sc.(IT). -9-

The foundation course for B.Sc.(IT) students is for those candidates who have not studied Mathematics at (10+2) level. These candidates have to study the basic mathematics as given in the foundation course for B.Sc.(IT) on the website. They will have to submit the assignments given for the course to the study centres for Assessment and get a Satisfactory grade (above 50%). 8. VIRTUAL REGISTRATION In exceptional cases like a candidate who has the necessary background and capability to learn by selfstudy both theory as well as practicals but not in a position to attend the counselling and practical classes at the study centres, he/she may be permitted to take Virtual Registration with VET. He/she will be allocated to a study centre for evaluation of Internal Assessment marks through submission of theory assignments and to take the laboratory tests for practicals. The eligibility for Virtual registration will be through a screening test (for checking already possessed capability) conducted by a committee formed by KSOU/VET. This form of registration is only in exceptional cases. 9. ACADEMIC REGULATIONS FOR IT-COURSES OF M.Sc (IT) & B.Sc (IT) 9.1 General Regulations a) A student has to register for all the subjects of a semester to which he/she is eligible at the beginning of each semester according to the scheduled dates except in the case of M.Sc.(IT)-1st semester Foundation Course which could taken independently in the first instance. A student is permitted to register for the next higher semester after completion of a semester course, irrespective of the results in his previous semester papers. The candidate can continue to register for higher semesters in a similar way along with his registration in failed subjects of earlier semesters for that degree. A student has to finish the degree programme within twice the duration of the academic programme for that degree. The fee for appearing in the University examination will be Rs.200/- per subject for repeaters.

Academic Assessment Procedure a) b) The academic assessment in each subject is based on the Internal Assessment Study Centres and Term-end examinations conducted by the University. The distribution of marks for evaluation in each subject will be as follows. i) For Theory Subjects Internal Assessment Term-end University Examination Total 25 marks 75 marks 100 marks through

The Internal Assessment Marks obtained by a candidate cannot be changed or improved upon unless he/she Re-registers for the same semester once again. A candidate can register for Improvement Examination in his/her term-end University Examination for any subject, either theory or practicals, of his/her earlier semesters. The better performance of his/her attempt will be taken into consideration.

Pattern of Examination a) The pattern of question paper for all university theory examinations will consists of two parts. Part-I will be compulsory with objective/short-questions type for 25 marks. Part-II will have choice (5 out of 8 questions) for 50 marks. The total will be for 75 marks. Regarding practical examinations for IT-courses, there will be one practical examination by the university for each semester. This examination will include questions on all the practicals of that semester and the student has to do a question or questions which comes to him by lot. The question may be from one or more subjects of the practicals conducted during the semester. The question paper will be set by the university and sent to the study centres. The university will also depute an External Examiner to the study centre for conducting practicals. Regarding project work for both B.Sc.(IT) & M.Sc.(IT), there will be a university examination based on presentation/viva-voce of their project work including evaluation of progress reports, synopsis, hard & soft copies of the project work.

The University evaluation for practicals and project will be done by a panel of examiners appointed by the university. 9.5 Minimum Marks for pass in each Subject/Internal Assessment / Project a) b) c) d) Theory Subject/Practicals - 40% (30 out of 75 / 40 out of 100) Project Report - 40% (40 out of 100) Internal Assessment - No minimum is prescribed A candidate has to secure a minimum of 40% marks from both theory examination and internal assessment combined for each subject. He/She should also get a minimum of 40% in the term-end University Examination in each subject including practicals. This applies to project work also.

10. THE GRADE SYSTEM For each semester, Grade system as given in the table below is adopted for declaration of results. For each subject, only grades will be awarded. For a semester, where the candidate has passed in all the subjects, an Overall Grade will be awarded based on the average percentage of marks in the semester. Also, for the award of Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees, an Overall Grade will be awarded based on the overall percentage of marks. For the award of class for the degree of B.Sc.(IT) & M.Sc.(IT), the cumulative performance of the candidates in the last four semesters (3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th) for B.Sc.(IT) and last two semesters (3rd & 4th ) for M.Sc.(IT), will be considered.

11. EVALUATION OF FOUNDATION COURSES FOR B.SC.(IT) AND M.SC.(IT) a) The foundation course for B.Sc.(IT) students on Basic Mathematics will be evaluated based on submission of Assignments. b) The foundation course for M.Sc.(IT) will be evaluated both by Internal Assessment and by a University Examination. It will be a single paper covering the entire study material for all the subjects included in the Foundation Course Viz., Basic Course or Mathematics, Programming in C & Data Structures, Computer Organisation & Systems Programming. 12. PROCEDURE FOR UNIVERSITY EVALUATION OF PROJECT WORK The following is the approved procedure for the evaluation of Project work both for B.Sc.(IT) & M.Sc.(IT) 12.1 B.Sc.(IT) 6th Semester 12.1.1 Initial Work: Students should send a brief PROGRESS REPORT to KSOU through their study centres with a copy to VET/Bangalore, before a specified date giving details of the following: a) Title of the Project. b) Name of the Guide (indicate Designation & Organization) and Qualifications/ experience. c) Literature survey of the Project d) Brief write-up giving the scope & plan of the project work. e) At the end of the semester he has to submit bound hard copies ( 2 Nos.) to KSOU & a copy to VET/Bangalore. 12.1.2 Evaluation: Along with the University theory and Practical examination, there will also be an evaluation of the Project work by the University appointed examiners. This may consist of evaluation based on the project on any or all of the following: a) Demonstration and Presentation of the Project work by the student. b) Viva-voce examination. c) Evaluation of the content of the Project work. d) Review of the progress report submitted. The University evaluation will be for a maximum of 100 marks. The Internal Assessment Marks ( I.A. Marks) for project work will be for a maximum of 50 marks.
NOTE: THE STUDENT SHOULD CARRY A SOFT & HARD COPY OF HIS PROJECT WORK AS WELL AS A COPY OF THE PROGRESS REPORT TO THE UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION.

12.2

M.Sc.(IT) 3rd and 4th Semester 12.2.1 Initial Work during 3rd semester: i) During M.Sc.(IT) 3rd Semester, students should send a brief progress report (6 to 10 pages) to Registrar, Evaluation/KSOU, through their study centre with a copy to VET/Bangalore, before a specified date giving details of the following: a) Title of the Project. b) Name of the Guide (indicate Designation & Organization) and Qualifications/ experience. c) Write-up on Literature survey. d) Proposed scope & Plan of the project work. e) Bibliography. ii) Implementation and completion of project during M.Sc.(IT) 4th semester. The student has to complete his project work, and submit the following. a) 2 hard copies of the project work to KSOU b) One hard copy to VET/Bangalore
NOTE: THE STUDENT SHOULD CARRY A SOFT & HARD COPY OF HIS PROJECT WORK AS WELL AS A COPY OF THE PROGRESS REPORT SUBMITTED IN M.Sc.(IT) 3rd SEMESTER, TO THE UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION.

12.3 University Evaluation: The Project work will be evaluated by the University appointed examiners as per schedule announced by the University. The evaluation may be based on any or all of the following aspects: e) Demonstration and Presentation of the Project work by the student. f) Viva-voce examination. g) Evaluation of the content of the Project work. h) Review of the progress report submitted by the student. 12.4 Marks for Project work: Internal Assessment = (25 + 25) = 50 marks (for 3rd and 4th semesters put together) University Evaluation = 100 marks - 14 -
