IN THIS ISSUE ~ NEWS & NOTES ~ PANCAKE SUPPER ~ LADIES TEA and so much more..... Dear friends, Jesus was a Jew. Its such a simple, obvious statement, and yet its a fact that we Christians often overlook. Jesus was a Jew. He was born to Jewish parents. He was presented in the temple when he was eight days old, in accordance with Jewish teaching. He read and studied Jewish law. He celebrated Passover and other Jewish holidays. He was sometimes called rabbi, and his teachings build upon ancient Jewish themes. Its impossible to understand Jesus without understanding his Jewish background. So I am excited that this years speaker at Chapman Universitys Founders Day is Amy-Jill Levine, a New Testament scholar who is herself a devout Jew. As a professor at Vanderbilt Divinity School (a predominantly Christian seminary), her presentations help people hear and understand Jesus as a Jewish storyteller. Besides being my alma mater, Chapman University has been in covenant with the Disciples of Christ since its founding in 1861. Founders Day is a celebration of that covenant, and in addition to lectures by Dr. Levine, it includes opportunities for fellowship, worship, and a concert featuring the Chapman Choir. Founders Day is actually a two-day event; Friday, March 23 will center around three lectures by Dr. Levine. Saturday, March 24 will include the concert, a luncheon, and a conversation with Dr. Levine and several Chapman faculty members. You can sign up for all or part of the event. I hope to see you there. Blessings,

A prayer for Bixby Knolls Christian Church

Use me to bring wholeness to my neighbor. Use my church to bring wholeness to our community. Show us how your kingdom of shalom can be made real on earth through us.

Living in the Moment will be the Lenten booklet the church will use this year. These devotions take a practical look at what we are called to do right now at this moment to live out the life that Christ has in mind for us as his forgiven, beloved and saved followers. They will be available by Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. If you would like you may make a donation of $1.50 for your copy. For those that are electronically able you can obtain a copy for your Kindle or Nook for 99 cents.

Old enough to serve

In a worship committee meeting, much debate occurred about the minimum age for acolytes. If kids cant reach the pulpit to place the Bible, then they shouldnt be allowed to carry it, some said. Others complained that young participants didnt carry the cross straight enough or that their childish delight seemed irreverent. The conversation seemed to overshadow the central question: Who gets to serve? Does Gods calling have limits? Shouldnt our faithful, joyful hearts, not our talents or abilities, define the quality of our service? Perhaps we can learn from the child standing eagerly in the back of the sanctuary, clutching a Bible to his chest and asking, I help God? I dont want to be the one to tell him no.

Week of Compassion is the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. Through Week of Compassion, our church works to alleviate the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and the promotion of mission opportunities. Every February, congregations like ours focus on the work of Week of Compassion. Despite its name, Week of Compassion is at work all year long; already in 2012, Week of Compassion has responded to tornadoes and other severe weather in the southern U.S., not to mention ongoing relief efforts to various locations throughout the world. Please pray for the ongoing work of Week of Compassion. Watch for an envelope in the next Fellowship News, and a special opportunity to contribute to this important ministry. And eat at Roxannes any Wednesday in February!

Clara Jones officially joined BKCC on Sunday, February 5. She lives here in Long Beach and has been attending for several weeks. Welcome, Clara! Also on February 5, we welcomed in worship the scouts and families from Boy Scout Troop 29, Ship 529, and Venture Crew 29. For many years, Bixby Knolls Christian Church has partnered with scouting as a chartered organization. Scouts assisted in worship by leading a flag ceremony, playing in the praise band, and reading scripture. Lonny McClure, Skipper from Ship 529, also shared a word of greeting on behalf of all three units. Ginger Bradfield spent a few days at Loch Leven for the regional Pastors Partners Retreat. She thanks the CWF for providing financial assistance that enabled her to go. Pastor Dannys father, Larry Bradfield, recently suffered a stroke, but is recovering well. Ongoing prayers have been requested for Ed Bremel, John Thomas, and especially Earlene Thomas who has been scheduled for surgery on Feb. 8. BKCC welcomes Meals on Wheels.
