February 12th: Creating Beloved Community

Rev. Wendy Pantoja Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observed that creating beloved community requires a qualitative change in our souls and a quantitative change in our lives. How much are we willing to give of ourselves in order to realize this dream? A multicultural lunch will follow. Please bring a dish to share that is representative of your cultural background or of one that calls you to deeper relationship.

February 19th: Worship Committee Led Service Join us at 11am as we are led by our Worship Committee.

February 26th: On Being Good for Nothing

Rev. Wendy Pantoja Although a creedless religious movement, Unitarian Universalism is grounded in an ethic of relationality. What does this mean in our daily living?

MUSINGS FROM THE MINISTER

FEBRUARY 2012

Reverend Wendy Pantoja

February

Now that we have settled well into our rst year of shared ministry, we can better enjoy the commitments we have made to each other, to the life of this congregation, and to our ongoing relationship with our denomination and with the world. The most fundamental of these is being stewards of our congregation by sharing generously of our time, talent, and treasure. In so doing, we ensure the viability of this liberal religious community that nurtures our spirit and heals our soul. As we look toward the next congregational year for ways in which we will minister to each other, to the greater Miami community and to the world, you have come up with some wonderful ideas. Among them are: building a hearty adult faith development program, providing scholarships for current and would-be leaders to hone their skills and represent us in the shaping of our denomination, and partnering with other social justice organizations as we endeavor to live our Unitarian Universalist principles. The reasons that compel you to be generous stewards are many. Some of you are grateful for the abundance of care and understanding that lls our spirit through our connections. Others want to do their part in nurturing the legacy of love, compassion, and justice you have inherited so you can pass it on to future generations. Still others speak to wanting to make a compassionate and joyous difference in the world. You probably have many others. Whatever your reasons may be for being good stewards of this congregation, please be sure to share them during our annual budget drive. This campaign will be launched with an all congregation dinner on February 4. On Sunday, we will be hearing some specic ways in which your generosity of time, talent and treasure will make a difference in our liberal religious community. Throughout the drive, stewardship consultants from UUCM will be very happy to help with your discernment. Please do not hesitate to avail yourselves of their expertise and willingness to help. As mosaic makers and weavers of the dream, let us join our efforts for the vibrant continuity of this community of memory and hope. En paz y fe, Wendypaz

NOTES FROM THE BOARD

FEBRUARY 2012

Barbara Woshinsky- President of the Board

As I was walking into the sanctuary early one Sunday, I heard a strange voice. Soft yet strong, it was neither high nor low, young nor old, male nor female. Surprised, I looked around; the sanctuary appeared to be empty. I called out: Hello? Is anyone there? The voice replied, Good morning. I am your church. My jaw dropped. Dont sweat it, the voice continued, this isnt a mystical experience. Im not the Church with a capital C, only the buildings and grounds. I cant call myself the congregation because I dont possess personhood, not even corporate. But I do have feelings. I gulped and gathered my greeting skills together. Its lovely to meet you, church. My name is Barbara. How are you today? --Im good. Sunday is my favorite day, because I get to watch Zoltan prepare the sanctuary for the service. Then Sally, Tim and the choir come in to rehearse. I love to hear them singing and playing. Im happy when my chairs are warm and full of adults and kids during the service. The sermons are pretty good too. Afterwards, everyone enjoys coffee or lunch inside me, or else out on my lawn. Its nice to see the children running around after RE. But then, after everyone leaves and Im all alone, I feel kind of neglected sometimes. I wish someone would water my shrubs and owers more often, or spread mulch around to massage my toes. Sorry about that, church, I replied. Some people do work hard on your grounds, but we need more volunteers. We just had an Opportunity Fair that should have encouraged folks to join in. How about the rest of your week? Well, Rev. Wendy and Jessi are in my ofce most days, and I like to see the lunch bunch, the Buddhist group, the Yoga class and the other people who meet in my different rooms. But I still get kind of an empty feeling sometimes. Id love to be used morefor dances, meetings, lectures, or just for fun. It would be great to have all kinds of people here. Im a very inclusive structure. I know. Expanding our programming and reaching out to the community are important parts of our stewardship vision, too. Dont get discouraged remember our theme: S, se puede! Yes we can! As I left the sanctuary, I heard a gentle echo: S, se puede.
David Jacobs- Treasurer of the Board

Dear Members, In the next week or so, you will nd in your mailboxan annual calendar year contribution statement produced by our new church database. The statements look different than in prior years in format and in how your contributions are listed. If you made a household pledge for 2011-2012, you will nd a statement for each household member with certain contributions split between household members. Combine the total on both statements for your total annual household contribution. The transition to our new database has been a slowprocess, but will eventually result in a much more efcient, accuratesystem. Your patience during this transition process has been and is most appreciated. Please review your statements carefully. If you feel there is an error, don't hesitate to call our ofce administrator Jessica Brautigam at 305-667-3697 or contact me directly, my email address is cpacamper@gmail.com.

Joining Sonny are Ellen Bukstel, Rod McDonald, Annie Wenz, Nick Annis, and our very own Amy Carol Webb. Sonny brings together these fabulous artists to perform her brother's music and keep it alive. FEBRUARY 2012

MEET OUR COMMITTEE ON MINISTRY

Until recently, our congregation utilized a Ministerial Relations Committee whenever there were problems or complaints regarding the minister. The MRC also acted as a support for our settled minister. There are sound reasons why we have moved away from this model to that of a Committee on Ministry. Recognition has evolved that in order for congregations to be healthy and vibrant; their focus must expand the denition of ministry to include not only the professional minister, but also all of the committees and members. In the words of Rev. Anne Heller, Committees on Ministry are designed to track the heartbeat of ministry within a congregation; how the memberstake care of themselves and each other, how the lay ministerial leadership serves a congregation; and how the minister serves the congregation. It seeks to understand, assess, support, and advocate for robust ministry through the context of congregational life.and help us be the best that we can be for each other and our community at large. We practice ministry alone, with others as a group/committee, and as a congregation reaching out into the larger community. So whether you are part of a committee, help to mail the newsletter, or seek avenues for social justice; we hope to reach for the best within us, make a difference, and bring joy and accomplishment to our congregation. From time to time we will be assessing the ministerial health of the congregation, offering workshops and forums, and helping to develop a congregational mission statement. We hope to be opportunity facilitators; and although we may not solve problems, we hope to help nd workable solutions to problems. Our members are: Nannette Bartels, Rey Baumel, Elizabeth Hayes, Janice McArthur, Reed Olszack working in conjunction with Rev. Wendy. We meet monthly, or as needed. Please share any of your ideas, aspirations, or concerns with any of us, in condence, as we want to be an integral part of YOUR ministry. We will always welcome your recommendations.

Elizabeth Hayes
Elizabeth Hayes was born in Cleveland, Ohio and has a 20 year-old son, Taachi. She is an Oncology Nurse but enjoys exploring and playing in the Everglades, reading, and enjoying and supporting the arts. She was raised and a practicing Catholic who did not believe in the Trinity and was looking for a religion that meshed more with her beliefs. Reed Olszack was on her Development Committee where she worked and she knew he was a UU. When she asked him about it he gave her a Why Are U.U. brochure, which he had in his car, and the rest, as they say, is history! She is passionate about making a difference in the lives of her patients and their families and not skimming the

Janice McArthur
Janice McArthur joined the UUCM in 1982 (give or take a year) in search of a place for a single mom with two little girls to nd a community with purpose and a seeking a rational approach to life. This community has been her circle of friends and her University. She has served in many capacities over the years: Treasurer, Clerk, member of many Committees and participant in many workshops; highlighted by being Board President in 1993 - the year after Hurricane Andrew.
