SUMMARY OF WORK Kinetic Consulting is pleased to offer our bid to develop a 3-5 year strategy that will position the IDI to uniquely contribute to the field of international development such that it becomes a sustainable well known authority within the field. Kinetic has been consulting for over 15 years in the education industry and has an extremely high track record in meeting the needs of our clients. We are currently engaged in consulting services to 11 educational programs in six different countries around the world. One of the major advantages we bring to our consulting practice is a proven methodology and a body of published literature that has been featured in numerous International Development journals. SCOPE OF WORK 1. Literature Review A literature review of best practices will start broadly with thought leadership reports, data reports and papers from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) on industry trends and recommendations. Next, focused competitive intelligence will be compiled from public data available from the Niagara College International Development Institute, the Centre For International Development at Harvard University and the Simon Fraser University Office of International Development. This approach combines both theoretical best practices and real life examples that could then be applied to Humber. 2. Internal & External Interviews In order to describe, detail and access the goals, strategy and results of IDIs progress, interviews will be conducted with internal and external stakeholders. Twelve (12) to fourteen (14), one-hour interviews will be conducted. The internal interviewees will consist of current students, instructors, administrators, and career councilors. The external interviewees will consist of program graduates, and industry representatives. The industry representatives will consist of both current partners, such as World Vision, Plan Canada or Right to Play, and representatives from organizations that Humber is not currently working directly with. The interviews will focus on whether the program curriculum satisfies the needs of the industry; this will include content, duration and relevance. The interviews will be conducted in person, as long that the interviewees are local. If in-person interviews are not possible, the interview will be conducted via telephone. 3. Long term Strategy A 3-5 year strategy will be completed using the Diamond-E framework from Crossan, Rouse, Fry and Killing. This analysis will include the environmental aspect, internal resources, organizational capabilities and the management preferences of Humber Colleges International Development Institute. The financial performance of 6
the College will also be examined including the organizations health and operating performance. This analysis will be used to provide a go forward plan that ensures multiple levels of fit within the strategy. The environmental review will include a Porters five forces assessment in order to analyze the industrys profitability and competitive rivalry among other colleges, threats of entrants and substitutes, and the power of suppliers and buyers. Porters industry value chain analysis will also be used to review the IDIs primary activities that have been integrated into the structure of the college. The organizations capabilities, behavior and culture will be reviewed in order to identify any remaining gaps. Aspects of the IDIs resources will be reviewed including the marketing, operations, development, financial and corporate reputation. We will also review whether the colleges resources contribute to its competitive advantage within the field. As part of the interview process outlined above, the IDIs management will also be included to gain insight into the IDIs current corporate governance and corporate social responsibility practices. The above will form a framework to develop a 3-5 year strategy which will ensure Humber Colleges IDI is well positioned to uniquely contribute to and become a sustainable, well known authority within the field of international development. 4. Written Report A detailed written report will be submitted upon completion of the project. The completed report will be submitted to Humber College by March 10, 2011. The projected contents of this report can be found in Appendix A of this proposal. 5. Project Index See attached Appendix A 6. Effort and Fees See attached Appendix B & C 7.
