LM35/LM35A1LM35C1LM35CA/LM35D Preclslon Centlgrade Temperature Sensors

The LM35 series are precision integrateckircuit temperatura sensors, whose output vollage Is IInearty proportional to the Gelslus (Gentlgrade) temperatura. The LM35 thus has an advantage over linear temperature sensors calibrated in Kelvln, as the user Is not requlrad to subtract a large constant voltage from Its output to obtaln convenlent Gentlgrade scaling. The LM35 does not raquire any external calibratlon or trimmlng to prov1de typlcal accuracies 01 Y/C at room temperature and o//C over a lull -55 to + 150"C temperature range. Low cost Is assured by trimming and calibratlon at the waler lavel. The LM35's low output impadance, linear output, and precise inherent callbration make interfacing to readout or control circuitry especlally easy. It can be usad wlth single power supplies, or wlth plus and mlnus supplles. As it draws onIy 60 p.A from Its supply, It has very Iow sell-heating, less than O.1C In still a1r.The LM35 Is ratad to operate over a-55' to + 150"C temperature range, while !he LM35C Is ratad lar a -40' to + 11OOC range (-10' wlth Improvad accuracy). The LM35 series is available packaged In hermetlc TQ-46 transistor packages, while the LM35C, LM35CA, and LM35D ara a1so available in the plastlc TO-92 transistor package. The LM35D Is also avallable In an 8-lead surfaea mount smaJl outline package and a plastlc T0-202 package.

Appllcatlons
The LM35 can be applled easily in \he same way as other integrated-eircit temperatura senS<n. It can be glued or cemented to a surface and ns temperatura will be within aboul 0.01'C of the surface temperatura. Thls presumes that \he amblent alr temperatura Is almost !he sama as lhe surface temperatura; ~ the alr temperatura were much hlgher or Iower than the surface temperatura, the actual temperature 01 the LM35 die would be at an ntermedlate temperature between lhe surface temperatu-e and !he alr temperatura. Thls Is expecially trua lor !he T0-92 plastic package, where lhe copper leads are the principal thermal path to carry heat into !he device, so Its temperature mlght be dOler to the alr temperature than to lhe surlace temperature. To minimlze this problem, be sure that the wlring to lhe LM35, as it leaves the device, Is held at the same temperatura as !he surface of interest. The easlest way to do thls Is to cOllar up !hese wiras wilh a bead 01 epoxy which will Insura lhat the Ieads and wiras are all at the sama temperature as lhe surface, and that \he LM35 die's temperature will not be affected by the alr temperature. The T()..46 metal package can also be Soldered lO a metal surfaca or pipe wilhout darnaga. Of course, In thaI case lhe V - tenninal 01 tha circuit will be grounded to !hat metal. Allematively, the LM35 can be mounted inside a sealed-and metal tube, and can then be d1pped into a balh or scrawed into a lhreadect hole in a tank. As with any IC, !ha LM35 and accompanying wiring an CII'CURS muSl 'De l<ept insulated and dry, to avoid leakage and corrosion. This Is especialiy true il the circuit may oparate at cold temperatu-es where condansatlon can occur. Printed-eircuit ooatlngs end varnishes such es Humlseal end epoxy peints O' dips are ollen usad to insure !hat moislure cannot corrode the LM35 O' its connections. These devices are somatlmes soldered to a small lightwelght heat fin, to decrease the thennal time constant and spead up the responsa in slowly-moving alr. On the other hand, a small lhannal mass may be addad to !he sensor, to glve the steadlest readlng despite small daviations In the alr temperature.

Uke most mlcropower circults, lhe LM35 hes a IImited abillty to drive heavy capacitlve loads. The LM35 by itsall Is abie to drive 50 pI without special precautions, 1Ihaevier Ioads are anticipated, it is easy to lsolate or decouple the load with a raslstor; sea Figul'8 3. Or you can Improve the tolaranee 01 capacitance wilh a series A-C damper lrom output to ground; sea FJgUffI 4. When the LM35 Is applied with a 200n load rasistor as shown In F/gurfI 5, 6, or 8, It is relatively immune to wiring

capacitance because !he capacltance lorms a bypass lrom groond to input, not on !he outpul However, as with any linear circult connacted to wires In a hostile envlrorrnant, its performance can be affected adversely by Intensa 616Ctromagnetic sources such as ralays, radio transmitters, motors with arcing brusheS, SCR transients, etc, as its wiring can act as a recetving antenna and ns Intemal junctions can act as rectlfiers. For best rasults in such cases, a bypass capacitO' trom VIN to groond and a series A-G damper such as 7S0 In series with 0.2 or 1 "F Irom output to groond ara olten uselul. These are shown In Figures 13, 14, and 16.
