PENCIL MAKING INDUSTRY Introduction: Pencils are becoming more and more popular these days as a writing media. Lead pencils were first introduced in England in the middle of sixteenth century. The very first pencils consist of rods of pure graphite cut from the mine material. At that time graphite purification was not necessary. The modern methods of manufacturing involves inserting of graphite rods between grooved woods. Now-a-days pencils are available in the market in various standards. The soft and amorphous graphites are used in pencil making. The pencil making industry can be started on a small scale. The raw materials, plant and machinery are indigenously available. This industry has everlasting demand also. Properties & Characteristics: 1. The pencil writings can be erased. 2. Pencil should have considerable life. 3. Pencil should provide smoothness in writing. 4. It should undergo less wear and tear. 5. Pencil is available in almost all colours. 6. The softness of pencil lead depends upon the graphite content and the baking temperature. Softer grades of pencils have leads of greater diameter than the harder grade pencils, as the former are not mechanically very strong. Uses & Applications: Due to smooth and easy handling of pencils, it is largely used in various fields like copying, writing, sketching etc. Coloured pencils are usually used for drawing and writing. Market Survey: Pencil has a profound importance as a writing item. The quality that pencil writings can be easily erased provides its advantage over the pen. Various grades of pencils such as soft, medium and hard are available in the market. With the efforts by Government to Improve literacy in our country provides an increase in requirement of pencils and industrial requirement of drawing is also increasing and so that of pencils. The pencil making industry has a very good export potential too. It is being exported not only to developing countries, but also to developed western countries. All these ensures a very good future demand of pencils in India. Formulation 1 Lead Composition formula for Soft Pencils Ingredients % by Wt Graphite 61.22 Clay 18.37 Grey antimony 18.37 Tallow 2.04 Formulation 2 Lead Composition formula for hard pencils Ingredients % by Wt. Graphite 56.25 Clay 28.13 Grey antimony 12.50 Lamp black 3.12 Raw Materials Required: Graphite, Wooden Slate, Clay, Lamp black; Tallow, Grey antimony etc. Plant & Machinery Required 1. Lead Grinding Roller 2. Lead Press 3. Circular Saw 4. Grooving & Rounding Machine 5. Glue Press 6. Sand Papering Machine 7. Paint Dipping Machine 8. End-cutter 9. Stamping Machine 10. Filter Press 11. Tube Mills 12. Kneading Machine. Manufacturing Process: The manufacturing process involves the following steps : 1. Lead Making Process: Graphite and clay should be in very fine form to provide smoothness to the lead. Graphite is ground in dry condition, air floated and water floated to remove grit particles. A stoneware clay free from iron and lime, containing silica and alumina is the binder. The clay is ground in dry condition, water floated and settled in tank. Clay and graphite are then mixed mechanically and wet ground in a colloidal mill or between burr-stones in a closed tank. Tube mills and pebble mills can also be used for grinding purpose. The grinding operation is very tedious, time consuming and expensive. Another process can be adopted to save the grinding time. It involves the deflocculation of clay and graphite mixture in such a way that their particles will remain suspended in a liquid form for an indefinite period and then passed through a filter media. The ground mass is then subjected to Alteration using a filter press or vacuum filter. Filter cloth or screen causes the clogging of fine product. Therefore vacuum filter is preferred for this purpose. Excess water can also be removed by hydraulic dewatering presses and the mass is compressed. The filter cake is then passed through kneading machine several times to get the desired consistency and plasticity. This mass is then extruded through a series of hydraulic presses and finally it is forced through dies of desired diameter. Extrusion pressures are of 800 to 2000 psi. Lead issues from the die in continuous strings. The lead is uncoiled by hand and pinched off into lengths equal to the pencil lengths. 2. Wood Working Process: First of all wood material for making pencil (185 mm x 70 mm x 5 mm) is put into the rotary roasting barrel and a little water is added. The barrel is then heated to adjust the moisture content in the wood. It is then shaped into fixed size with a 'grooving and rounding machine', which makes semicircular grooves on the wood and 'pencil lead' is inserted in its middle part. Finishing Process: The grooved woods and pencil leads are then put into a glueing machine. This machine binds the two semicircular grooved woods together with pencil lead in between. They are then bound by an iron plate and clamping frame for transfer into a drying chamber for drying. The dried work pieces which have uneven ends are put into a endcutting machine for rough cutting of both ends. Then they are shaped into individual pencils on a shaper of required size and dimensions. The shaper shaves the pencils into a round or a hexagonal shape. These uncoated pencils are then subjected to surface grinding. In this process, the improper materials adhered to the pencil are removed giving it a smooth surface. The uncoated pencils are then lacquered on a painting machine. First of all under coating is done twice. Then coloured lacquer is coated 3 or 4 times over it. The final touch is then given by two coatings of transparent finishing lacquer. The number of coating can be changed, if required. Both ends of the pencils are then cut into a uniform length using an end-cutter. Then after stamping on a stamping machine, a transparent lacquer for glazing is applied using a painting machine. The finished pencils are then packed by dozens and then by grosses and marketed.
