New Avenue 9 Exhibition Opens


An Avenue 9 exhibition with both human and art interest will open on February 17 and run through March 17. The twoperson show features Augie Velasquez, an artist with over four decades of stoneworking experience, together with Darren Names, a recent CSUC graduate who manipulates painted and photographic images through computer programs. Despite differences in ages, backgrounds, and working methods, both explore the human condition through mythic and scientific perspectives. Music Symposium, Feb. 23-24


The 8th annual CSU, Chico New Music Symposium will take place Thursday, February 23rd and Friday, February 24th and will include performances and master classes that celebrate the art of music composition. Honoring the late Alfred Loeffler, composer and music professor at Chico State, this years symposium features a not-to-be missed performance by pianist Sarah Cahill, as well as works and performances by the Universitys own music students. Works by student composers will be featured during the first concert, which takes place Thursday, February 23rd at 7:30 p.m. in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall. Headlining the event on Friday, February 24th at 7:30 p.m. in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall, will be world-class pianist and recording artist Sarah Cahill. Called as tenacious and committed an advocate as any composer could dream of by the San Francisco Chronicle, Cahill has commissioned, premiered, and recorded numerous compositions for solo piano by some of the leading composers of our time. In addition to her extensive recording catalog and public appearances, her concerts have been broadcast on radio throughout the U.S., and have been heard around the globe as part of WGBHs Art of the States radio program. Sarah Cahill is a leading figure in the Bay Areas new music scene, said Department of Music faculty member David Dvorin, artistic director of the New Music Symposium. She brings an amazing amount of enthusiasm and commitment to her performances, oftentimes working directly with composers, musicologists, and scholars to fully materialize a work. Her passionate playing and dedication to new music is inspiring to musicians and musiclovers alike. For the Friday evening concert, Cahill will present piano works written especially for her project, A Sweeter Music, by Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Yoko Ono, Frederic Rzewski, Phil Kline, The Residents, and many others. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther Kings Nobel Lecture, each composer was prompted to write new works envisioning peace in response to war. She has performed the program extensively around the U.S. (Video highlights can be seen on YouTube at http://bit.ly/y5cJ9k.) Admission is free and open for all events. North State Symphony, Feb. 18


North State Symphonys first concert in 2012 brings together a Beethoven symphony, a soloist who grew up in Chico and a pair of unknown treasures, according to Music Director Kyle Wiley Pickett. I am excited to present two wonderful, little-known pieces to our audience, said Pickett, especially because the climax of the concert will be the equally wonderful and familiar Beethoven Symphony #7. Melissa Matson, viola soloist will perform the Sonata for Viola and Orchestra by Rebecca Clarke. Matson, a member of a prominent Chico family, attended CSU, Chico and Eastman School of Music. Now a resident of Rochester, NY, Ms. Matson is the principal violist of the Rochester Philharmonic and teaches at Eastman, as well as performing chamber music. The viola, several inches larger than a violin, is typically an inner voice among the classical string instruments. The notes the instrument produces lie between the violin and cello. According to Keith Herritt, the Executive Director of North State Symphony and himself a violist, the sound of a viola is like enjoying a glass of fine wine. Its subtle, mellow and warm. Pickett said that his discovery of the Rebecca Clarke Sonata was like unearthing a forgotten valuable which had been hidden in an attic. There are so many great pieces of music, and not all of them get played every day. When Melissa suggested the Sonata to me, I knew immediately that was the piece to showcase her and her instrument. Also on the program are the Seventh Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. Like the Fifth Symphony with its famous four-note beginning, the Symphony #7 is exciting, full of rhythm and energy, according to Pickett. And, he added, it has the most beautiful second movement of any symphony, by anyone. Rounding out the concerts promised treasures is the Habanera, by Emmanuel Chabrier, called by Pickett another little treat for your ears. The concert, Treasures Beloved and Unknown, will be performed on Saturday Feb. 18 in Laxson Auditorium, Chico, at 7:30 p.m. The next day, Sunday Feb. 19, Reddings Cascade Theatre will host a repeat performance at 2 p.m. The Chico concert and Melissa Matsons appearance in Chico are sponsored by members of her family, including the Richard S. Matson Law Offices; David W. Matson CPA, Nance Matson and other members of the Robert Matson family. In Redding, the concert is sponsored by Dr. Douglas McConnell. Having a healthy smile starts with a childs first tooth. February is National Childrens Dental Health Month - a good time to make sure children have regular dental checkups and are brushing twice a day, usually after breakfast and before bed at night. In the United States most children suffer from one or more decayed teeth by the age of three. Although dental caries (tooth decay) is largely preventable, it remains the most common chronic disease in young children5 times more common than asthma. Children as young as 18 months can have a mouth full of decayed teeth that requires hospital dental surgery as a remedy. Prevention is the key to good oral health. The best way to ensure that a child does not get cavities or periodontal (gum) disease is to teach proper oral health habits at an early age. Good oral hygiene routines should be established as early as infancy and continued throughout life, states Aimee Myles, Health Education Specialist for Butte County Public Health Department. Parents can begin cleaning the babys mouth during the first few days after birth. After every feeding, gently wipe the babys gums with a damp washcloth or gauze pad. This establishes at an early age the importance of oral hygiene and the feel of having clean teeth and gums. When teeth start to come in, they should be brushed with a soft infant toothbrush and water. It is best to consult a dentist about when to start using toothpaste however fluoridecontaining toothpaste can be used starting at age 2. Establishing a dental home by age one is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (www.aapd.org). The year one dental visit can actually save money. A study in the journal Pediatrics showed that children who have their first dental visit before age one have 40 percent lower dental costs in their first five years than children who have their first dental visit later. This is due to the cost of dental and medical procedures that may be necessary as a result of poor oral health. The first dental visit should be presented to the child as positive and non-threatening. Using words such as hurt, pain and brave could scare a child. Let a child know a dentist is a friendly doctor who will help them take care of their teeth. Its also best to let the dentist explain what will happen during the visit. Remember: A

Born on February 22, 1732 into a Virginia planter family he learned the morals, manners, and body of knowledge requisite for an l8th century Virginia gentleman. He pursued two intertwined interests: military arts and western expansion. At 16 he helped survey Shenandoah lands for Lord Fairfax. Commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, he fought the rst skirmishes of what grew into the French and Indian War. The next year, as an aide to General Edward Braddock, he escaped injury although four bullets ripped his coat and two horses were shot from under him. From 1759 to the outbreak of the American Revolution, Washington managed his lands around Mount Vernon and served in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Married to a widow, Martha Dandridge Custis, he devoted himself to a busy and happy life. But like his fellow planters, Washington felt himself exploited by the British regulations. As the quarrel with the mother country grew acute, he moderately but rmly voiced his resistance to the restrictions. When the Second Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia in May, 1775, Washington, one of the Virginia delegates, was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. On July 3,1775 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, he took command of the ill-trained troops and embarked upon a war that was to last six grueling years. He realized early that the best strategy was to harass the British. Ensuing battles saw him fall back slowly, then strike unexpectedly. Finally in 1781with the aid of aFrench allies-he forced the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Washington longed to retire to his elds at Mount Vernon. But he soon realized that the nation, under the Articles of Confederation, was not functioning well, so he became a prime mover in the steps leading to the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia in 1787. When the new Constitution was ratied, the Electoral College unanimously elected Washington President, and he was sworn in at the Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York City. The determination of foreign policy became preponderantly a Presidential concern, and when the French Revolution led to a major war between France and England, Washington refused to accept entirely the recommendations of either his Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, who was pro-French, or his Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, who was pro-British. Rather, he insisted upon a neutral course until the United States could grow stronger. Wearied of politics and feeling old, he retired at the end of his second term. In his Farewell Address, he urged the nation to forswear excessive party spirit and geographical distinctions. On foreign affairs, he warned against long term alliances. He enjoyed less than three years of retirement, for he died of a throat infection December 14,1799. For months the nation mourned The Father of The Country.

Born February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, his parents were both of undistinguished families. His family moved to Indiana, and in his tenth year his mother died. His father later remarried, and the family moved to Illinois. Lincolns stepmother, Sally Bush, was a major inuence in his life, and she later remarked, His mind and mine, what little I had, seemed to run together. Lincoln made extraordinary efforts to attain knowledge while working on a farm, splitting rails for fences, and keeping store in New Salem, Illinois. He borrowed books from everyone who would loan them to him, and was a voracious reader. He was a captain in the Black Hawk War, spent eight years in the Illinois legislature, and rode the circuit of courts for many years. He married Mary Todd, and they had four boys, one of whom lived to maturity. In 1858 Lincoln ran against Stephen A. Douglas for Senator. He lost the election, but in debating the Douglas, he gained a national reputation that won him the Republican nomination for President in 1860. As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization. Further, he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederate batteries red on Fort Sumter and forced its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy, but four remained within the Union, the Civil War had begun. On January 1, 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves within the Confederacy. Lincoln never let the world-forget that the Civil War involved an even larger issue. This he stated in dedicating the military cemetery at Gettysburg: . . . that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. . . that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. Lincoln won reelection in 1864, as Union military triumphs heralded an end of the war. In his planning for peace, Lincoln was exible and generous, encouraging Southerners to lay down their arms and join speedily in reunion as stated in his second Inaugural Address: With malice toward none; with charity for all: with rmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to nish the work we are in; to bind up the nations wounds . . . On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Fords Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who somehow thought he was helping the South. The opposite was the resultfor with Lincolns death, the possibility of peace with magnanimity died.

First-Time Home Buyers


The City of Oroville currently has substantial financial resources from CalHOME, CDBG and HOME funding to provide mortgage subsidy assistance loans to First-Time Home Buyers purchasing a home within the Oroville City Limits. To be eligible for this program, applicants cannot have owned a home in the past three years, must be able to get prequalified with a primary lender and their household gross income must be less than 80% of the Butte County Area median income limits as established by the California Department of Housing and Community Development. With interest rates at an all time low (the current national average interest rate is 3.95%) paired with low housing purchase prices and a large inventory of available homes, it is a great time to make that first home purchase. For the first time in years, many home buyers participating in the City of Orovilles First-Time Home Buyer Program are paying less for their monthly mortgage payment than they paid for rent. The First Time Home Buyers program is not effected by the dissolution of the Oroville Redevelopment Agency. Individuals and families should really take advantage of the current buyers market! The Life-Blood of Orovilles Museums Honored


The City of Oroville honored over sixty museum docents at an appreciation dinner on Sunday, January 29, 2012 that was held at the Centennial Cultural Center. In 2011 the docents logged over 7,000 hours of volunteer time with a value to the City and community of over $100,000. The museum docent program is the life-blood of the five Oroville museums which include the C.F. Lott Home in Sank Park, the Chinese Temple and Museum Complex, Bolts Antique Tool Museum, the Pioneer History Museum and the Feather River Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. The docent program which began over thirty years ago is comprised of a diligent group of volunteers spearheaded by lead docent Carol Brown. Currently the docents have many responsibilities including maintaining the unique quality of Orovilles museums. The docents act as tour guides and interact with visitors to insure that they have a memorable experience. They also staff the gift shops, update records, and assist the City Curator with special projects including cataloging, restoring, and preserving artifacts. Those attending the dinner received certificates of appreciation presented by G. Harold Duffey, City Administrator. Mr. Duffey stated, The docents and their continued dedication to Orovilles Museums is a treasure in itself. Since record keeping started in the 1980s the docents have recorded over 78,000 hours. My name is Gurjus Singh. I live at 135 Valley View Drive in Oroville, CA. I am 16 years old and am a sophomore at Oroville High School. I am in the Oroville Foothill 4-H. This is my 9th year in 4-H. I can be reached at 530-282-3376. In this time of economic downturn in the market there are a majority of people that do not have food to eat. I decided to implement a plan to help those in need. I will do this by collecting canned goods for the homeless. I will be working with the local Salvation Army of Oroville. I am benefiting from doing this by helping others that are hungry and it makes me feel good about myself. In my faith it is said, Sharing is Caring The community benefits because they will also help me to help others by providing the hungry with food. One thing I have learned in 4-H is that it is very important to give back for what you have gained. The cost of the project will be travel time and gas to speak with various organizations regarding the canned food drive. Also, it will take effort to make sure that the barrels are at each organization. I will have to make sure that I am organized. The barrels will have to be picked up and dropped of when needed. With the help of the Salvation Army, the 4-H Clubs, local Temples in Yuba City, churches and schools I will be able to accomplish my goal. I will also be able to accomplish this task with the help of the people of Butte County.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 1735 Montgomery Street starting at 10:00 A.M. and ending at 12:00 Noon. Topics include: The City and you, coordination of efforts with City services; combining services with the Fire Department and Building Department and the multifamily inspection process. Gardening has always been a popular hobby, but even more so now that people are looking to economize on the cost of food. From 2010 to 2011 the cost of food has risen 33%! As you get ready to plan your garden, another way to economize is to purchase just enough seed for the crops you intend to harvest. Unused seeds generally are not stored under optimum conditions for continued viability or they get thrown away. So now is the time to get out some paper and pencil and gure out your seed needs for the coming gardening season! One piece of helpful information to get you started is that the California Dept. of Agriculture maintains and enforces seed germination standards for all seeds grown and sold in the state. Section 3900 of the California Code of Regulations lists the percentage germination rate for vegetable seeds. If you purchase a packet of broccoli seeds you can be sure that 75% of the seeds in the packet will germinate. Of course, it is up to you to provide the required growing conditions to produce the yields you expect. All seed packets contain information on optimum growing conditions for that variety. A general rule of thumb is plant thinly, harvest thickly. For example, sweet corn needs to be planted at least four rows wide to provide for adequate pollination. The seeds are planted 6 inches apart in rows that are 36 inches apart. Corn requires a lot of space! If you have a backyard garden plot you will need to make some choices about the space requirements for the vegetables you intend to grow. Another piece of information that will be useful during the planning stages is to nd out how many seeds are in the packet you purchase. Generally this information is included in the seed catalog listing. In our corn example above, a one-ounce packet of corn contains about 150 seeds. Based on the California Dept of Agriculture standards, corn germination is regulated at 75%, which means that about 113 seeds from that packet will sprout. To determine how much corn seed you need to plant for your familys consumption you need to also know the yield. Yield is a term that indicates how much edible vegetable you can expect to harvest from a particular variety and therefore excludes inedible parts of the plant. One of my most used reference books is How To Grow More Vegetables (than you ever thought possible on less land than you can imagine) by John Jeavons, which includes charts with all the information you need to make the calculations and more! For beginner gardeners, the possible yield is about .20 pounds per plant (about 1/5 of a pound.) The average consumption of sweet corn per year per person is 9.7 pounds. If you have a family of four and you eat an average amount of corn, you will need to plant enough seed to yield about 39 pounds of corn. If each plant yields about 1/5 of a pound, you will need to plant about 195 plants. With a germination rate of 113 plants per seed packet you will need to purchase two packets to achieve the yield you anticipate. However, you will need to factor in loss due to insect predation, birds, deer, bad weather and so forth. According to my reference book, the average yield from a 100 square foot garden bed planted to corn is 27 pounds. So to have enough corn for your family of four you will need to plant about 150 square feet of corn seed (a bed 5 feet wide by 30 feet long.) Much of the information about seed germination, planting requirements, number of seeds per packet and so forth are found in seed catalogs or in the online stores of seed vendors. However, if you are getting serious about producing reliable amounts of food for yourself or your family, investing in some good reference books will go a long way toward making the process easier and more productive.
