CHALLENGE / OPPORTUNITY A mining company located in Brazil produces 14 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. The iron ore is extracted from the mines and carried to the processing unit along a mine duct which utilizes water as means of transport. After undergoing a separation process, the water is sent to the wastewater treatment plant. Various inorganic coagulants were tested but did not offer good results as far as clarification, removal of Suspended Solids (SS) and dissolved iron (Fe) were concerned. The coagulants also showed a considerable level of toxicity exposed by the bioindicators used to monitor the quality of the treated effluent thrown into the rivers and lakes in the region. Organic Coagulant T a n f llo c is now used to improve the quality Tanf oc of the treated effluent without interfering with the physical, chemical or biological properties of the receiving body.
