There is good news
and bad news

You are aware of much of the good news: Regarding
the North American Union we have been setting back
the timetable of the Insiders with our combined efforts:
the field and headquarters initiatives. The enthusiasm for
the fight is at an all-time high amongst our members and
this is reflected by the response to our upcoming 50th
Anniversary Celebration — we have sold out of tickets to
the Main Ballroom for our major events and are close to
selling out of overflow tickets.
The bad news is that the economy is hurting many, and
we are seeing several allies in the fight who are talking in
terms of sustaining huge deficits. We know that over the
years many have cried “wolf” as a regular part of their
fundraising, but we believe that this time it is real since we
too have been experiencing problems with the rising costs
of overhead.
Gasoline is only one measure. Anyone who is depen-
dent on the U.S. Postal Service has experienced a seven
percent increase in first-class mail over a short period,
and it will go up again soon. Other classes of mail for
magazines, newspapers, and the like have increased sub-
stantially more. We know of one conservative publication
whose costs have increased 20 percent in the last year.
The entire publications industry is hurting. Newspapers
are going into online services, laying off more and more
people, cutting the size of their papers, merging with other
papers or selling to large chains, and increasing their prices
for advertising and for the publication itself. I just bought a
local paper that has now increased its price to one dollar. I
remember questioning the value at 25 cents.

 There is good news and bad news
an online member. It is free and it helps us to get the word
out instantly.
The economic situation is not an accident. Using
President John F. McManu’s marvelous analysis: if you
can see the problem then don’t you think that those respon-
sible can see it as well? Are they stupid, ignorant, or is what
they are doing by design?
There is no question that much of what is going on is
by design.
Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) member Alan
S. Blinder, an economist, was quoted in the Wall Street
Journal saying the job insecurity people face today is
“only the tip of the iceberg.” Much of the reason according
to the article is due to outsourcing and moving production
overseas with a potential loss of 40 million jobs over the
next several years.
CFR member Alan Greenspan, a former Federal Reserve
Chairman, was quoted in the Boston Globe as saying:
“Allowing more skilled workers into the country would
bring down the salaries of top earners in the United States,
easing tensions over the mounting wage gap.” “Our skilled
wages are higher than anywhere in the world.” “If we open
up a significant window for skilled workers, that would
suppress the skilled-wage level and end the concentration
of income.”
Greenspan was not warning, he was advocating what
he was saying.
One CFR member says we may send 40 million jobs
overseas. Another CFR member says we need to lower the
wages of the people that are left!
Yet another CFR member, Paul Volker, when he was
about to become Chairman of the Fed in 1979, said, “The
standard of living of the average American has to decline…
I don’t think you can escape that.”
The fluctuating economy is not a result of bad economic
policy; it is a result of design. These are the people who
set policy.
The March 31, 2008 cover of Business Week magazine
showed the current Chairman of the Fed, Ben Bernanke,
under the headline, “Reluctant Revolutionary. Where Is
Bernanke Taking Us?” The portrait of Bernanke was a
take-off of the portrait of the Russian Communist leader
Lenin that appears on so many Soviet medals and pins.
Business Week is obviously trying to tell us something.

One cannot have a socialist dictatorship with a strong
and viable middle class. Economic independence produces
enemies of the powerful state: People who speak their
minds and have the wherewithal to resist tyranny — they
can afford to speak out.
A strong middle class is a hallmark of liberty. Without
a middle class, autocracy rules. Marx always had as his
aim the elimination of the bourgeoisie, or middle class. Of
the many misconceptions about communism, a key one is
that they are against the ruling class. They are primarily
against the middle class. What is left then are the masses
at the bottom and the ruling class at the top. The gap is
not only wide, it is impossible to span unless one becomes
mentored by the ruling class, following orders, and moving
up the ruling-party ladder.
Likewise, those who are retired with independent
means, or even adequate means, must also be financially
ruined by those who intend to rule since any economic
independence cannot be allowed.
The figures used by our government called the Consumer
Price Index (CPI) to “calculate inflation” are far removed

from reality — and that is putting it nicely. The recent arti-
cle about the CPI by Dr. John Fisher in The New American,
dated June 23, 2008, documents the problem. CPI is used
to set interest rates, and wage and price adjustments. Since
the CPI numbers are false by nearly half of the real figure,
it helps destroy the savings of those who are retired or are
taking the responsibility to invest for their retirement.
One of the wags in our headquarters office recently said
to me that his 401K is rapidly becoming his 201K!
Anyone who shops for the family groceries, has bought
anything substantial in the last decade, or fills a car’s gas
tank knows that the official CPI is not accurate.
If the task is to measure inflation, why does one look
at the rise of prices? Inflation is the printing of too much
paper money, causing the rise in prices. It is like measuring
rain fall to determine why it rained. Measure the money
supply — but the Federal Reserve no longer makes avail-

able the M-3 money-supply figures because too many
newsletters were being published telling people how to
figure inflation by this method.
How bad is it? In a real world, Social Security recipients
would be getting 70 percent more than they do now if the
old CPI system had been in use over the past 20 years.
Going back to the mail and newspapers, it takes 20 times
the amount of money to mail a letter or buy a newspaper
than when I was a child: two cents and five cents.
This means that it takes twenty dollars to purchase what
used to take one dollar. You cannot use the price of machin-
ery to gauge inflation since better production methods have
lowered the cost of production. Plus there are extenuating
costs such as union contracts that can skew the bottom line.
Of course, I am talking about domestic production.
Government fudging the facts serves many purposes.
Two are: (1) The destruction of the independence and
security of the elderly, and (2) preventing the premature
collapse of the system by the people recognizing the finan-
cial burden, thereby rejecting the system.
This may seem to be contradictory, but we need to
understand that what is being done to the American people
is being done using the technique of patient gradualism. It
is the old story of the frog in water. Place a frog in boiling
water and he will leap out. Place him in tepid water and
slowly bring it up to a boil and he will have his energy
sapped from him before he realizes what is happening, be
unable to leap out, and be cooked.
The Social Security System was the tepid water that
placed the elderly into the yoke of government, benign
at first, but as conditions worsen, the elderly will have no
where to turn but to government.
Yes, they have their children to help them, but the
children too will be suffering due to inflation, loss of jobs,
and the modern personal debt cycle that has been sold to
the American family as a way to get ahead now leading
to increasing foreclosures. As for the elderly, they have
reached a point where many can no longer afford the taxes
on their inflation-driven home value, even though it may be
paid for. How would you like to have paid 30 or 40 thou-
sand for a home that is now taxed as a one million dollar
house as is the case in some areas of the country?
A recent phenomenon is that many homes are now
selling at prices well below the tax evaluation. The govern-
ment says one thing, the market another.
As a result of our government’s policies, we see people
scrambling just to make ends meet. The purpose of these
policies, therefore, is coming to fruition: The inability of
Americans to remain free because they are too busy just
keeping up, with no time or money to spare. As a solution,
too many are looking to government as the answer rather
than the problem.
We hear that the catch word for the 2008 election is
“change.” In reality, what that means is that you give them
dollars, and the government gives you back change — if
you’re lucky.
All kidding aside, those closest to the government get
the dollars with dwindling amounts doled out the farther
away from government you get. The same holds true with
inflationary dollars — particularly inflationary dollars.
Now we see the reverse mortgage gaining popularity
with the elderly, who are agreeing to pull enough money
out of a paid home to exist month by month. In the end, the
mortgage company ends up with the house. It could well
be called the “reverse foreclosure.” In the end, they will
leave nothing but memories to their children. That is fine,
but why not memories and an estate?
At some point, we know that the elderly will be a huge
burden on the state if we do not reverse government policy.
With this will come the attitude among the young that use-
less eaters need to be eliminated — they are too much of a
burden and offer nothing. We see “enlightened” countries

such as the Netherlands and Germany practicing euthana-
sia, while our youth are being trained in the public schools
to ignore morality when it comes to making life or death
decisions: situation ethics.
Hitler may be dead, but his spirit lives on in the European
Union. If you need any other proof of this attitude, see the
movie Expelled, where Ben Stein poses the question to
the curator about the morality of euthanizing the mentally
infirm at the museum where this practice took place under
the Nazis. It is chilling.
Returning to the reasons why the Insiders feel com-
pelled to fudge the facts: Too early a collapse of our econ-
omy due to the burden on the taxpayer will telegraph the
Insiders’ game plan to the general public and the Insiders
will not produce the gains for their agenda they envision. In
their view, more dumbing down needs to take place, more
preparation of the elderly to look toward government for
their salvation, much more to be put in place to ensure that
a collapse will not backfire, causing the people to revert to
economic reality instead of a handout by government.
The bottom line is this: We who understand what is
happening need to do all we can while we still have time
and money.
What is the solution? Overall, it is a strong John Birch
Society, with viable education and action programs leading
to a constitutional Congress.
As far as immediate changes in the policies of govern-
ment, we need to stop deliberately importing skilled work-
ers who undercut our own; stop our own government from
subsidizing businesses to move overseas; stop foreign aid;
bring our troops home from the more than 100 countries
where they are now stationed; drill for our own oil; and
repeal NAFTA; to name a few.
There is no question that we will need to phase out
Social Security and Medicare or it will ultimately become
universal, bankrupting our grandchildren and setting the
stage for de-population, which is an aspect of the ecology
program of those who mean to rule us: the downsizing of
the human race to approximately one fourth of our current
global population — as stated in their own books!
Over all, we need to get back to the constitutional limits
of government that will reduce the size of the bureaucracy
and cost of government by 80 percent. At the same time,
we need to sell off all government-owned businesses and
property not held constitutionally for forts, arsenals, and
such. The sell-off will go a long way toward paying down
the national debt if not entirely.
And I am taking a guess when I believe that I need not
tell you what we can do with the Internal Revenue Service
and the Federal “Preserve.”
The problems with the economy in the last few months
have made inroads into our ability to raise extra sums to
move the mission forward.
We have done some drastic things to cut costs over the
last few years, but it gets to the point where it becomes
almost impossible to do so without hurting our mission.
We cannot afford to let up on pressing the Insiders or be
forced to retrench if we plan on winning.
So my friends, I am asking that you keep us in your
thoughts as well when you are thinking of things you may
be able to do to move our overall mission forward. ■

JBS.org Freedom Campaign — California
Dr. Sterling Lacy

Dr. Sterling Lacy will be remembered by some
Midwesterners for his service as a JBS Coordinator
for many years. After leaving the staff, he and
his wife have remained faithful members. He is a
practicing professional family counselor residing
in Texarkana, Texas. His activity as a JBS member
declined in recent years because of illness, but he has
regained his health and is continuing the important
work of saving our country.
Over the past few months, several of his letters to
the local newspaper warning about plans to create a
North American Union elicited favorable responses
from 80 area readers. Then, The New American
published its “Merger in the Making” special issue.
When the Society announced its determination to
have one million copies of this special issue distrib-
uted, Sterling decided to do what he could to flood
his area with the magazine. He sent a fund-raising
letter to the 80 individuals seeking help for a wide
distribution of the magazine. His request resulted
in donations exceeding $3,000 and he has used
the money to distribute over 1,500 copies of the
magazine. He’s still working on this very important
project.
Only recently, the editor of the Texarkana Gazette
published an editorial opposing the plans for the
Trans-Texas Corridor (the NAFTA Superhighway).
Sterling reports, “I’ve been here 25 years and I’ve
never seen him oppose a position so favored by
the powers that be.” What motivates this fine JBS
member? He concluded a recent message to JBS
headquarters by saying, “After all, freedom is a
moral issue.” ■
Though — thanks to online access — the JBS.org
Freedom Campaign — California Meetup group is
for citizens across the State of California, it naturally
engages in activism mostly in the communities near
the Golden State’s capital. Therefore, there is consider-
able crossover between this Meetup group and the JBS
Chapter in Roseville, led by Chuck Armour III (a fam-
ily name familiar to longtime Birchers). That Chapter
has had a busy season, entering floats in the Roseville
Memorial Day and Independence Day parades, and
distributing almost 2,000 flyers along the parade routes.
Area Meetup “Freedom Campaigners” and JBS mem-
bers have also printed 20,000 anti-NAU flyers, with
10,000 to be distributed at the California State Fair
(August 15 – September 1). The group holds regular
information/action (and fun!) meetings at Sacramento’s
Carmichael Library and at other locations.
The the JBS.org Freedom Campaign — California
Meetup group has done some interesting things with
its website, including featuring information about
pending legislation, providing contact information for
Chapter Leaders in the surrounding area for prospects
interested in finding out more about the JBS, and (in
various discussion forums) linking with YouTube vid-
eos informing visitors about the NAU, taxation, and
other issues.
Visitors to the group’s website are informed as fol-
lows:

rently conducting nationwide in our JBS.org
Freedom Campaign are described in full at
www.jbs.org/freedom.”
Strategically located in the state’s capital, the
Statewide Freedom Campaign Meetup group’s goal
is to serve the many other local Freedom Campaign
Meetups forming around California as “the place to
come to learn about what is happening in the Freedom
Campaign at the state level.”
With a track record of activity going back to
February, this group is sure to set the pace for the
JBS.org Freedom Campaign in California. However,
we’ve heard that other Meetup groups in Southern
California will give them some very healthy competi-
tion! ■

investment in refineries, suspending Federal fuel taxes
when gasoline prices reach a benchmark amount, and
promoting free trade with certain oil-producing countries.

America Should Have Listened
50 Years Ago
Let’s go back 50 years. Fidel Castro was waging a
guerrilla war against the government of Cuba led by
Fulgencio Batista. The New York Times had already
published and republished its opinion that Castro was
a glorious revolutionary and about as far from being a
Communist as could be imagined. Along with that very
Robert Welch wrote back in 1958 that Castro was a Communist,
even while the New York Times was heaping praise on the
revolutionary.

Barack Obama’s S. 2433 (and the related House ver-
sion, H.R. 1302) is a UN-connected revenue sharing
plan. Although the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
removed the words “United Nations” from the bill wher-
ever the words “United Nations Millennium Development
Goals” originally appeared, at the very end of the bill the
committee was forced to admit the UN connection
with the Millennium Development Goals when they
explained: “The term ‘Millennium Development Goals’
means the goals set out in the United Nations Millennium
Declaration. General Assembly Resolution 55/2 (2000).”
Urge your senators and representative to reject this
UN-inspired global welfare scheme. ■

important source of perspective about what was happen-
ing in Cuba, various individuals and elements of the U.S.
government were aiding him behind the scenes. This
was occurring four months before Castro succeeded
in capturing the reins of government in Cuba. If there
were any Americans who had even a hint of the truth
about the bearded revolutionary, they put their concerns
aside and assured themselves that such a catastrophe as
a Communist takeover of a country only 90 miles from
ours simply couldn’t happen because the U.S. leaders
wouldn’t allow it.
But a man named Robert Welch knew the truth. A
private citizen, he had gathered information other private
citizens could have acquired had they taken the time and
spent a similar amount of effort. Welch then dared counter
the view promoted by the nation’s premier newspaper and
by numerous individuals from the political elite. He pub-
lished what he knew about Castro in his small American
Opinion magazine. Here is a portion of what wrote:
Now the evidence from Castro’s whole past, that
he is a Communist agent carrying out Communist
orders and plans, is overwhelming. The evidence
from his method of operation is even more so. He
is using against Batista almost exactly the same
tactics, at any cost in human misery, employed by
Mao Tze-tung against Chiang Kai-shek in 1945 and
46. Of course, for the record, Castro says he is not
a Communist, and reminds you that writers in the
New York Times say he is not a Communist…. We
remember how emphatically Mao Tze-tung and his
good friends among New York Times writers insisted
that Mao was not a Communist either.
Had Robert Welch been listened to by a sufficient
number of Americans, Cuba would not have become a
Soviet satellite, there would never have been a Bay of
Pigs betrayal, and there would never have been a Cuban
missile crisis. Also, Castro’s influence throughout Latin

The recent launch of the revamped JBS.org and
the newly named ShopJBS.org (formerly aobs-
store.com) were important milestones in our ongo-
ing efforts to make our websites more useful and
user friendly, to move them into the world of the
interactive Web 2.0 environment, and to increase
dramatically the number of both unique visitors
and frequent visitors to our family of websites.
Over time, our objective is not only to provide
information via our websties (though the more
who visit the websites for that purpose, the better),
but also to motivate and activate visitors to become
increasingly involved in our multifaceted cam-
paign for family and freedom. As visitors become
increasingly familiar with and excited about our
message, we want them to become online and/or
regular subscribers to The New American, to reg-
ister as free online members at JBS.org, to email
letters to Congress and articles to friends, to join
meetups and chapters, and (in general) to put boots
on the ground — using the Web as an important
organizational and communications tool.
In recent months, Web department leader Dennis
Behreandt and his team — David Kauzlaric and
Kevin Scholl — have done yeoman’s work build-
ing the architecture for the new websites, and that
work has already resulted in a measurable increase
in daily unique visitors to those sites. Though
enhancements continue (and will always continue)
on the newly revamped websites, in recent weeks
the Web team has shifted its focus to working with
TNA to create a new TNA website that will be
better than ever!
The new TNA Online will be launched at
the existing URL (www.thenewamerican.com) on
September 1. Please be sure to check it out — and
then visit it frequently and encourage others to
do the same. The site will contain more informa-
tion than ever, including more frequent postings
intended to attract repeat traffic. It will also include
new features such as market reports and even
video. Like the revamped JBS.org, it will be more
interactive.
In general, we want to make TNA Online a
place online readers will want to visit frequently to
stay informed. We also want to make it a spring-
board to JBS.org and involvement. We are already
very excited about our new website in the making,
and when it is launched on September 1, we think
you will be too! ■

America and Africa would not have steered many other
nations leftward, and millions of Cubans would not have
fled their homeland for America and elsewhere.
Robert Welch followed his revelations by publish-
ing additional articles about Castro immediately after
Castro’s January 1, 1959 takeover. Two years later, after
Castro had enjoyed a hero’s welcome in the United
States, he admitted that he was indeed a Communist.
My point? Robert Welch should have been listened to
in 1958. And what he said and The John Birch Society he
founded has said should be listened to today. ■

Let’s Rock Congress
Back on Its Heels Again!
Remember how great it was last June when the
Senate was hearing from so many people opposed to
amnesty that they had to stop working on the Bush-
Kennedy-McCain amnesty bill? Now, another perfect
storm is brewing over high gas prices.
In response to $4 per gallon gas prices and large
increases in our other energy costs, majority public
opinion is swinging toward unlocking our domestic
energy resources. For example, a July 15 Rasmussen
Reports national telephone survey found that 72 percent
of adults believe rising fuel prices are the biggest short-
term problem for the U.S. economy. The same survey
revealed that 67 percent favored allowing offshore drill-
ing along the coasts of the United States, while only
25 percent were against it. Another Rasmussen Reports
survey conducted on June 26 found “Forty-nine percent
favor building nuclear power plants while 31 percent
are opposed.”
As a result of the increasing public outcry over
high energy costs in recent months, a fiercely partisan
battle over energy policy was raging in both houses of
Congress in the weeks leading up to the August recess.
House Republicans even resorted to holding rallies and
giving speeches regarding energy legislation in the offi-
cially-shutdown House chamber during the recess. We
hope that sufficient numbers of Democrats, including
“Blue Dog” Democrats, will join with the majority of
Republicans after the recess to start passing legislation
to begin freeing up our energy resources.
This is where you come into the picture. You and our
other members and allies need to tell your representa-
tive and senators loudly and clearly just how upset you
are with high gas prices and how much you want them
to start lowering gas prices by unlocking our energy
resources. The timing is perfect. Congress returns
from its August recess right after Labor Day and plans
to adjourn again in late September to make time for
campaigning before the November elections. Now is
the time to strike while most of the representatives and
many of the senators are striving to please their constitu-
ents to get re-elected.

Torturing the Constitution
One of the most consistently abused portions of the
U.S. Constitution is what has come to be known as the
“necessary and proper clause.” Members of Congress
regularly cite it for authorization to enact legislation
that is totally unconstitutional.
The clause appears in item 18 of Article I, Section
8 of the Constitution. After a comprehensive listing
of powers granted to Congress in the previous 17
clauses of this Article, the final enacting clause reads:
“[Congress shall have power] To make all laws which
shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execu-
tion the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested
by this Constitution in the Government of the United
States, or in any department or officer thereof.”

Lawmakers regularly ignore the weight of the word
“foregoing” when citing this passage. But this impor-
tant word clearly indicates that Congress has power
regarding only what is mentioned in the preceding 17
clauses of Article I, Section 8, or in specific passages
granting power in other portions of the Constitution.
Omitting this word from considerations about legisla-
tion opens the door to virtually anything.
If Congress has power to enact any law deemed nec-
essary and proper, it would have been foolish for the
Constitution’s authors to have listed powers granted in
the previous 17 clauses. Why enumerate some powers
if power to do anything is granted? The men who wrote
the Constitution, and the state legislators who ratified
it, were not foolish. The addition of the wording about
“foregoing powers” was clearly an assertion, similar to
the soon-to-be-added Tenth Amendment, that govern-
ment power is strictly limited, not unlimited. Congress
cannot legitimately enact laws and create programs
that its members deem “necessary and proper” to sat-
isfy their whims and the whims of their constituents.
There is no power granted to Congress in Article I,
Section 8, or in any other portion of the Constitution,
for the federal government to dole out foreign aid
to governments all over the world, to send the U.S.
military into war without a formal declaration by
Congress, or to have any presence whatsoever in the
fields of education, housing, medicine, energy, trans-
portation, and more. Laws authorizing such actions are
clearly not “necessary and proper” and any member

in the Constitution were written with care and must be
deemed important. ■

Great North American Phone-In

Late in 2006, The John Birch Society helped to
form the Coalition to Block the North American
Union. We were pleased to be joined in that effort
by Howard Phillips, Tom DeWeese, Jerome Corsi,
Phyllis Schlafly, and a growing number of others.
The Coalition is now cooperating with Canadian
opponents of the NAU who have selected the date
of September 16th for a massive telephone protest.
We ask all who want to derail the plans for creating
the NAU to call the offices of their congressman
and senators (we recommend calling local offices)
and simply inform the aide who takes the call that
you want the congressman or senator who repre-
sents you to oppose any move that would place the
U.S. in a North American Union. Canadians will
be calling their members of parliament with the
same message on the same day. ■

50th Anniversary News

It’s hard to believe that the 50th Anniversary Celebration
is less than a month away. We are diligently working out
the final details and making those last-minute decisions to
help create a memorable and educational experience for
all members and non-members in attendance.
Tickets for the evening events on Friday and Saturday
have long been sold out; however, we still have overflow
tickets available. Overflow tickets would get you a seat
in a room across the hall from the main event, and you
would be able to view the event live on a large screen
monitor while also enjoying the meal. The largest events
are on these days as well, including Chuck Baldwin’s pre-
sentation on Friday night and the historic Council Dinner
occurring on Saturday night.
John McManus will host the Council Dinner and
introduce Hid Welch, Ron Paul, and Arthur Thompson.
If you’d like a chance to meet Ron Paul, he will be sign-
ing books from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Bring
your own book or purchase one on site.
Each of the educational sessions will likely be extreme-
ly busy, so please be prepared to come early. Seating is
limited, and it’s first come, first serve. We are not allow-
ing any video cameras or flash photography during these
sessions or during the dinners as we will be profession-
ally taping the sessions.

Society in 1962, back when I was a 23-year-
old editorial writer for the St. Louis Globe-
Democrat, appear to have been premature.
My congratulations to you and the Society
on the 50th anniversary of the JBS. And I
could not let the occasion pass without
expressing deep personal gratitude for all
that The New American and members of the
Society did for the Buchanan Brigades in
the insurgent campaigns of 1992, 1996, and
2000. That America retains her sovereignty,
and that the triumph of the New World
Order is by no means assured is surely in
good part a tribute to your patriotic labors.
