Tai Chi Classes Resume at the Senior Center

The first session of Tai Chi classes were a big hit at the Senior Center! Such a hit, in fact, that we have added a second instructor for new students. Amanda Goebel of Hillcrest Health Systems will again offer classes on Wednesdays and Friday at 1:00pm. Anyone wanting to continue with her class will need to re-sign up for the class. She will be offering only one class at 1:00pm on these days and each class can hold up to 15 participants. Courtney Stein, our Yoga and Tap instructor will be leading the other class and we are encouraging new participants who have not previously done Tai Chi, to attend her classes to keep the classes more to a beginner class (Courtney) and intermediate class (Amanda). Her classes will be offered on Tuesdays at 1:00pm and Friday at 11:00am. Courtney recently became certified as a Tai Chi instructor thanks to a grant that was received by our Senior Center from the Sarpy/Cass Health Department. Her classes will also be kept to 15 participants. These classes are offered free for the next 12 weeks thanks to a grant that was received from the National Safety Council-Greater Omaha Area. We strongly encourage that each participant attend both classes each week whenever possible. Call 402-293-3041 to sign up. Classes begin Tuesday, February 7th.

February Is Black History Month

Every year in FebruaryBlack History MonthAmerica celebrates the invaluable contributions of AfricanAmericans to the culture and history of our nation. During Black History Month, thousands of students at the elementary, high school, and university levels learn about African American history, an important part of American history. The tradition of Black History Month goes back to the beginning of the 20th Century. NAACP leader and legendary historian and educator Carter G. Woodson originally founded Negro History Week in 1926, when most history books simply omitted any African-American history and the role of African-Americans in the birth of America. Woodson chose February because it coincided with the birthdays of two men who fought for the freedom of American slaves: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, Negro History Week was expanded to Black History Month. It has marked an essential time to study and reflect on our collective history ever since. Suzanne Trimbath and Pauline Hightower, Senior participants at the Bellevue Senior Community Center, as well as a few other seniors, have planned two special speaker events related to Black History Month. Also, we will have a special Black History Month display in our case during the month of February. We appreciate all of their enthusiasm in planning these special events. Find out more about black history at www.naacp.org.

PLEASE will you HELP US HELP! The month of LOVE, also known as FEBRUARY, will once again be a month of opening our hearts to those in need. And who gives more love to us and need more love from us than our furry friends? We are collecting supplies for the NE HUMANE SOCIETY. The NE Humane Societys most heartfelt wish is to get all the animals at the shelter into new and loving home, but until they do that there are specific items they can use to provide for them.
