The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones. ~ Somerset Maugham

365.

Thats the number of days in a year. Its also the number of opportunities you get to make a change, hopefully positive. Whether its a personal goal youd like to accomplish, or someone elses life you want to make better, each day you are given a choice: continue to do things the way youve been doing them the previous 364 days. Or do something else. Jan. 1 is the day many of us make our New Years resolutions. Statistics vary, but most research indicates upwards of 50 percent of Americans make resolutions, many of them health-related. For many, its a mere three weeks later that most of those good intentions go by the wayside. Fast forward 24 months and youll find 84 percent of those people have fallen off the resolution wagon. Im not in the habit of making New Years resolutions. Unless you really work your plan its usually a recipe for failure. And, really, if something is that important, why put it off until Jan. 1? That said, if you choose Jan. 1 as the big day, there are a number of things you can do to help ensure success. One is to write down your goals. Seeing something on paper is a visual reminder of what youre trying to do. You can refer to it as often as youd like for reinforcement. Or, if you see the positive aspect to peer pressure, tell someone about your goals. A friend or family member can help keep you accountable. And theres nothing like the coworker you pass in the breakroom who says, Hows the diet going? to keep you on the straight and narrow. I like the satisfaction of crossing things off my to-do list

and knowing a treat awaits for a job well done is my personal carrot on a stick (although mine typically takes the form of chocolate). Make a resolution if youre so inclined. But dont beat yourself up if you dont meet your goals. Remember, theres always tomorrow. Cheers to a healthy, happy 2012!

How Growing Power keeps growing

by Will allen

ts the beginning of January and 2011 has finally come to an end. Most farmers have harvested their last crops and prepped their fields for the coming harsh Wisconsin winter. Unlike the typical Wisconsin farmer though, Growing Power, Inc. is neither winding down nor hibernating for the next several months. In fact, the staff at the historic urban farm in Milwaukee are actually gearing up and prepping their multiple farm sites for a busy winter season in which they grow food in up to 50 hoop-houses. Of course, nothing comes easy: for the past year Growing Power staffs worked tirelessly to acquire land for the year-round growing. As a result, in 2011 alone, Growing Power constructed 25 hoop-houses and initiated agricultural production on over 100 acres in and around Milwaukee. The organization hired 35 new employees and provided quality job-training to help manage this organizational growth and provide opportunities for unemployed individuals in Milwaukee at the same time. Its paid off for all. Growing Power food production has never been better: in just the past two months microgreens production jumped from 500 lbs./ week to almost 2,000 lbs./ week! Its hard to tell from a distance how much work goes on inside the small urban farm situated

on a three-acre plot on Milwaukees northwest side. The food that is grown by Growing Power is distributed to over 50 customers weekly, including Sysco, a global leader in food distribution that supplies large institutions like the Milwaukee Public School System. Through this partnership, Growing Power has served over 25,000 Milwaukee public school children a locally-grown snack. Despite the recent huge increases in production, the Growing Power team cant grow all this food alone. This is part of the reason why the organization invests so much in community education through hands-on training, technical support and business plan development for aspiring farmers: they welcome all to join the Good Food Revolution. The organization strives to increase local food production so that within the next five years, 10 percent of the food consumed in metro-Milwaukee is locally sourced versus the disturbingly less than 1 percent consumed today. The root motivation, though, is a staunch commitment to improving food security among the citys struggling families and individuals. A great way to get involved in this cause and learn urban and rural sustainable farming are the monthly From the Ground Up weekend workshops, whose

six-month series begins this January 7-8, 2012. Up to 100 people are expected to attend Januarys workshops and learn practical skills in vermiculture (raising worms), composting, aquaponics (raising fish and plants in a low-tech system that recirculates water), year-round agricultural production, renewable energy, mushrooms, project planning and marketing. These workshops coincide with the fivemonth long Commercial Urban Agriculture training designed for the serious entrepreneur. Trainees of the Commercial Urban Ag training create business plans to guide the development of their farms or local food enterprises and gain hands-on experiences with urban sustainable farm systems at the Growing Power Community Food Center. Space is limited, though. Interested in these training programs? Visit www.growingpower.org for more information. Growing Power also welcomes you to visit the urban farm daily at 1 p.m. for an hour and a half long educational tour of the facility for only $10/person. Will Allen, son of a sharecropper, former professional basketball player, ex-corporate sales leader, and now farmer, has become recognized as among the preeminent thinkers of our time on agriculture and food policy. The founder and CEO of Growing Power Inc., a farm and community food center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Allen is widely considered the leading authority in the expanding field of urban agriculture. At Growing Power and in community food projects across the nation and around the world, Allen promotes the belief that all people, regardless of their economic circumstances, should have access to fresh, safe, affordable and nutritious foods at all times. Using methods he has developed over a lifetime, Allen trains community members to become community farmers, assuring them a secure source of good food without regard to political or economic forces. In 2010, Mr. Allen joined First Lady Michelle Obama as she launched the White Houses Lets Move campaign to address issues affecting American youth and the risk of obesity and Mr. Allen was also recognized as one of TIME magazines 100 Most Influential People in the World and a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient in 2008. How can i live a more fulfilling life?

by kathy larson

here are many areas in a persons life that contribute to whether or not an individual is happy with themselves and/or their life. Identifying how you define happiness for yourself is the first step to improving your health and happiness. If youre truly being honest with yourself, most of us already know what we want to change about ourselves or our life, but simply dont act on it because something is holding us back. We all have within us an innate ability to listen if we choose to. Whether you choose to or not will be the difference to you living a life thats more fulfilling. The only way you can change your life is by listening to your inner self and sorting out whats holding you back. Is it because its uncomfortable for you to initiate change? Fear of the unknown or a past failure? Negative self-talk or low self-esteem? You have to own why youre asking this question to begin with, as Im a firm believer in where the mind goes, the man follows. Are you unhappy with yourself, your appearance, how you feel, your health, finances, environment or your job? What is it? Is it one thing or 5 areas of your life youre not excited about? Its critical that you start by writing down the areas of your life that youre not pleased with, and whats causing you to feel like you could be happier so you can live a more fulfilled life, thus greater heights of happiness. An easy way to assess your current lifestyle is by looking at your current life, how you live, eat, your job, your relationships and so forth. Take the time to evaluate what your ultimate life would look like if you allowed yourself to just dream for a minute? Truly, its in dreaming we allow ourselves to explore the many possibilities of change that will fulfill us and allow our inner self to have a voice. A great way to approach that is by simply writing out your wellness vision. Defining your ultimate wellness vision means dreaming big. If there was nothing that stood in your way, where would you be in the next 3-5 years of your life? Who would you surround yourself with, where would you live, how would your finances be and what would you change about your life today for an exceptionally fulfilled tomorrow? As a coach, behavior change is what I help you work on. Our job is to help you identify whats holding you back if youre feeling you want to achieve new heights, or if youre happy with your life and you simply want to continue down that path of success, what is the next step to make that a reality?
Natures Pathways | January 2012

For anyone to live a life of complete fulfillment, one needs to make certain to assess all the elements in their life that they feel are essential for them to be completely happy. Assessing your life means looking at all areas of your life that you need to tackle on a day-today basis, some of which could be family, finances, work environment, your job, your faith, self-confidence and so on. You need to be able to take each area and make a list of whats working for you and what isnt. Its that simple. We refer to doing that as peeling the onion to get to the root cause of why you may be feeling unfilled to begin with or how to stay on the right track and avoid past obstacles. Most of us can identify the obvious obstacles in our heads, but until you write them down and do some soul searching, you truly wont get to the root cause of your unhappiness. Thus you wont be able to make change effectively in the areas of your life where its critical for you to fulfill your wellness vision. Most people live their life limiting themselves because they set their expectations too low, not wanting to dream too big. Thus they get what they invest in, living status quo and not making too many waves. From what we think, to the relationships we keep in our lives, to the job we report to everyday. Think about it, every time you limit your thoughts to wanting more for yourself on a much higher scale, we set ourselves up for disappointment, feeling less than, and the possibility of feeling stuck where you are. If youre blaming someone else for your situation, a bad experience or your upbringing for your lack of living your best life, youre stuck. Feeling limited and stuck is not living. Within each of us is a spirit that just wants to be set free. When you put yourself into a little box, living each day staying in your comfort zone, we shut down the endless possibilities of expression expression of who we truly are and who we want to become. Happiness truly does come from within, not from the external factors, I get that. There are no goals, accomplishments or dreams that will make me happier than I allow myself to be. This is why its so important that you identify with who you truly are or want to be. Within all of us is an amazing ability and potential, unique and real just screaming to come out. When we dont listen to our inner-self, or give it a voice, life becomes more of a challenge than it has to be. Think about it, living by everyone elses standards, or because its all you know or that you are familiar with, you close

the door to a life that you so need and want. Too often we put on blinders and focus only on what others think is right or whats acceptable, and we miss out on everything else life has to offer. Therein lies the problem. Most people never get the gumption to make a shift in their lives because its too risky, unfamiliar or out of their comfort zone. They take a few steps, possibly become fearful, or simply do not want to put up the fight that it will take to bring your life to a whole new level. Most of us just give up. The essence of beginning to live a life of fulfillment means allowing ourselves to expand upon the gifts that weve been given and exploring a hidden talent or skill. Fulfillment comes from being authentically happy. Authentic happiness for me is defined as never feeling content with what is every day. It means embracing the good and looking for the lesson in the challenges we face and not letting negative experiences or emotions from our past ruin today for a better tomorrow. With that comes having to be open to change and possibly having to forgive others that have hurt us, so that you can move toward a happier you. Its important for anyone to set goals for themselves. Dreaming is a long-term goal that allows for you to start taking steps now to get closer to living a more fulfilled life today. I find writing extremely therapeutic. Its truly something I love to do. It brings me a sense of calm and validates my feelings. Just writing down your thoughts after every day (or weekly to begin with), can be in and of itself extremely therapeutic. Most people say they dont need to write things down, but truly when you do its like you give your thoughts life. Trying to sort things out in your head daily

just doesnt work. Our minds are too busy and scattered for that to be effective for most people. Meditation is also a great way to help you focus, whether its being alone with yourself 15 minutes a day, taking a yoga or Pilates class, or simply taking a walk to sort through your thoughts. Allowing yourself to just be or to just be alone for 15 minutes a day can make all the difference for you because getting regular exercise and eating healthy is key to a healthier you! So why not get on the road and reclaim your personal power, or maybe discover it for the first time! You just might find that acknowledging your inner voice and giving it life will allow you to identify with who you truly are meant to be! Keep it simple. Either you will continue to choose to be where you are now and feel unfilled or you choose to change your life, today, right now! Its always up to you! I wish you much joy and happiness and I can only hope that you will choose to share your positive energy with others that surround you each any every day, for your life is truly what you make of it when you make the choices for yourself that feel right.

How winter salt affects your favorite footwear

e all have our favorite pair of boots or shoes. Its taken us a long time to break them in just right. They fit so well and are so comfortable. No pinching, no blisters, no socks rubbing or bunching up. Its like going barefoot. Winter arrives, the first snow falls, out comes our favorite footwear and off we go. Taking a hike in a winter wonderland is a great way to combat cabin fever, especially if a light snow is falling. It is magical. Unfortunately, our everyday winter wonderland usually involves salt-treated concrete in one form or another. Going to and from work sometimes becomes challenging. Streets, sidewalks, parking lots at work and parking lots at the mall are full of snow that has been treated with salt. On warmer winter days, the snow melts and we step in puddles of salt water. It

penetrates our shoes and boots and leaves white stains. Our favorite footwear ends up looking pretty bad. The question is, should we throw them away? An alternative to throwing them away is de-salting. Its a great way to save our winter footwear. Using a solution of hot water and vinegar or a commerciallyprepared desalting solution, brush the solution into your boots or shoes. The solution neutralizes the salt. You can repeat this process if needed. For severe cases of salt, wrap the footwear in a white dish towel

soaked in the hot water vinegar solution or commercially-prepared desalting solution. Let them stand overnight. The salt will be drawn into the cloth. Once the footwear has dried, you can polish or waterproof. Winters cold blasts keep us tucked snuggly in our homes and its beauty invites us to spend time in it. Jack Frost paints our windows; the kids want to make snowmen winter calls to us. Come and play. Sledding, hiking, skiing, building snowmen, and slow walks among gently falling giant fluffy snowflakes are just some of the great things about winter. Keeping our footwear in great shape is one way of helping us enjoy winter as well.

resolve to replace toxic treatments with essential oils

by Dr. Jodie
Applying lavender to promote healing of incision.

onventional veterinarians and even many holistic veterinarians are hesitant to recommend essential oils for pets; however, when prepared, selected and utilized properly, they can be an effective and safe modality to prevent and treat many conditions which afflict our dogs and cats. Sadly, many pet owners are lead to believe that it is necessary to apply a monthly spot-on pesticide to their pets coat to prevent fleas and ticks from biting the pet. Some of these products contain known carcinogens and others are suspected. Some cause itching and hair loss. Essential oils such as cedarwood, lemongrass,

peppermint and eucalyptus can provide an effective and healthy alternative, however, poorly distilled, adulterated or improperly applied oils can also cause some serious problems. Tea tree or melaleuca has a reputation for causing illness in some dogs and cats. Yet blends of therapeutic grade oils containing melaleuca have been used successfully on many pets when applied in small amounts or when diluted properly with a healthy vegetable oil such as olive or coconut oil. These oils are called carrier oils. They can be used to dilute essential oils and to remove essential oils if they are inadvertently applied to an easily irritated tissue such as a mucous membrane or the eye. Microbes are becoming increasingly resistant to conventional antibiotics, and topical disinfectants can adversely affect the immune systems and organs of humans and pets who come into contact with them. Essential oils offer a healthy alternative for this dilemma. A blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus and rosemary has been shown to kill pseudomonas, methicillin-resistant staph aureus and toxic black mold. infections. In lieu of, or as an adjunct to steroidal or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, essential oils can decrease pain or redness due to trauma, arthritis or allergic reactions. Many conventional drugs have side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration, liver or kidney disease or even dry eye. Avoid this by applying helichrysum for bruising, copaiba for arthritis, or a blend which contains wintergreen for that warm/cool feel that is so soothing to swollen tissues. Perhaps the oil with the most notoriety and diversity of uses is lavender. Lavender is emotionally calming, topically soothing, antimicrobial and orally delicious when used to make ice cream! An internationally acclaimed organic farm in Utah harvests and distills lavender and provides visitors with therapeutic grade lavender products which can be consumed internally. Lavender can soothe burns, insect and cat bite wounds, and prevent infection. It can be applied with Vitamin E to incisions to promote healing and decrease scarring. When you choose an essential oil for your pet, be sure that it can be used internally. This speaks to the quality of the oil, the safety and the efficacy. If a human can ingest it, then it will be OK if your pet licks it. However, be cautious with hot oils, which may contain phenols, which felines cannot metabolize properly because they lack some of the normal human and dog liver detoxification enzymes. Cinnamon, oregano, thyme and clove are examples. One drop of oil goes a long way for a kitty just as for a human infant. Quality oils can be expensive, but

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Mediterranean diet, punching bags and fresh vs. cooked veggies
by karmen Nenahlo

question: I keep hearing about the Mediterranean diet. Good, bad or indifferent? answer: The Mediterranean diet is actually more of a lifestyle, and does incorporate many healthy foods and behaviors. For many years, it has consisted of high levels of activity, low stress and a highlymoderated earthy and nutritious diet. Living in the United States, we dont often see the high activity and low stress combination very abundantly. But no matter where we are in the world or what our situation is, following a Mediterranean meal plan is never a bad idea. Their diet is centered on small portions and an abundance of plant sources: fruits, vegetables, potatoes, breads and grains, beans, nuts and seeds. They strive to stay away from any processed foods and their main source of fat comes from olive oil. They promote fish a couple times a week and red meats a couple times a month. Fruit is the main option on their dessert platter. Their fitness guidelines are pretty broad, but they do recommend an amount of physical activity that promotes a healthy weight and well-being. In the end, the Mediterranean diet is thought to be one of the healthiest diets out there. question: I have a punching bag in my basement could I be using that to work out? answer: Yes, absolutely! Using a punching bag, or boxing, is a very unique and useful way to work out. However, simply punching the bag with no routine or training can lead to injury. Boxing is a great way to improve the bodys speed, coordination, endurance and strength. However, in order to properly utilize this type of workout, you must be educated on the different types of punches. Im talking about the jab, uppercut, hook, body punch and so on. You should also try and use a basic routine until you get the hang of things, such as jab, cross, hook, repeat. When you learn the basics of boxing, you can begin to reap the benefits, which include, most notably,
16
Natures Pathways | January 2012

stress relief. We all know theres nothing better than relieving a days worth of stress on a punching bag. Boxers also develop great upper body muscle tone and excellent endurance levels. Also, learning the techniques of boxing is a great way to develop self-defense and could be applied in real-life situations if needed (though w e hope it isnt). question: Should I be eating my vegetables fresh or should I cook them? answer: In truth, there are benefits to both. But one thing is certain eating vegetables, whether theyre grilled, roasted, baked, steamed, boiled or raw, is always good. Regarding this particular question, though, it really depends on the nutrients in the vegetables and how they react to temperature. For example, eating cooked carrots, spinach, mushrooms, asparagus and cabbage, amongst others, supply more antioxidants to the body when they are cooked. Tomatoes have proven to supply more lycopene when cooked, which is thought to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. But when it comes to water-soluble vitamins like B-complex and C, eating raw vegetables may be the way to go. Studies have shown that cooking vegetables with water-soluble nutrients can deplete the amount of these nutrients from the vegetables and transfer them to the water. Unfortunately, theres no simple answer to this question. The only way to ensure youre getting the most out of your vegetables is to include a combination of both cooked and raw options.

The third energy revolution

by George T. stone

e are witnessing the dawn of an historic transition for humankind. Indeed, it is a revolutionary transition in the utilization of energy resources. But we should not be apprehensive because with great change comes great opportunity. As Frank Lloyd Wright observed with keen geoarchitectural insight, Change is the greatest tradition! Energy does work. It is intrinsic to nature and essential to all we do. The awareness and application of external energy resources is a fundamental component of human culture and has contributed significantly to the development of civilization. Technology derives from such accumulated knowledge. I suggest punctuating the story of human utilization of energy with three revolutions. The first revolution was ignited by the harnessing of fire, probably during the tenure of Homo erectus about a million and a half years ago. This cultural quantum leap, which permitted the cooking of food and profoundly influenced human development, was likely accomplished first by the capture and preservation of natural fire and then by creation of fire using the primitive technologies of friction and sparking. Although human-caused fire came to be used for land clearance and other environmental alteration, it had only a minor impact on our planets surface carbon cycle

if well have to reduce our use of fossil fuels eventually anyway, why not start now and save the planet?
and did not release the vast quantities of ancient carbon stored in rocks of Earths crust. Burning wood simply recycles carbon fixed by photosynthesis. Plants are a renewable resource. The second great energy revolution is universally known as the Industrial Revolution. Although the date of its beginning is a matter of interpretation, the dawn of this historic transition may reasonably be assigned to the turn of the nineteenth century in Britain. Expanding mass production of manufactured goods required a lot of steam, which in turn demanded much heat for its generation. King Coals coronation was at hand, and the reign of fossil fuel began! Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) contain ancient carbon that took millions of years to sequester and has been out of circulation for tens to hundreds of millions of years. These are non-renewable resources. When we burn fossil fuels, we add ancient carbon to the present atmosphere. For over two centuries, we have been affecting time travel with enormous amounts of carbon and energy. But the dawn of the third energy revolution is upon us. We can see the faint glow of first light on the energy horizon. It is a time of reawakening, of promise and excitement. A new day is on the way. We must seize it! This great transition will reverse the destructive trends of the second revolution. Humankind through its unique capacities for creation and innovation will turn away from dependence on nonrenewable fossil fuels and return to the Sun God renewable energy. We must do this to preserve the magnificent planet that nurtured civilization. stranded on a desert island and you can bring only one ... essential oil?
by Mary E. Wishmann

ou may be familiar with this game. Imagine you are stranded on a desert island. You can bring only one book, or one movie or one album, etc. Which one would it be? Its a good way to share a little about ourselves, and what we enjoy or value. The same can be said about essential oils. Many of us enjoy and value them for their therapeutic properties. But, when it comes down to a single universal oil that works wherever it is needed, lavender is it. The first thing you may notice about an essential oil is its fragrance. Lavender can be described as light and floral with woody undertones. It is calming, relaxing and balancing physically and emotionally. And what is the first thing you should do when you are stranded on a desert island? Why, calm down and think rationally, of course! Use lavender for its ability to promote emotional balance. Inhaling its fragrance has brought relief from stress, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, and conditions such as depression, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Lavender has even been used to treat high blood pressure. Now that you have collected your thoughts, you look for fresh water. Walking away from the lagoon, to the top of a hill, you see water, but the far side of that hill is the sitcom-classic slippery slope right down into a big splash. No broken bones for you, but lavender is soothing and healing on cuts, scrapes and bruises. Lavenders name was taken from the Latin word lavare, which means to wash. Ancient Romans used lavender essential oil for bathing, soothing and disinfecting. Add one drop of lavender pure essential oil to a cup of water to make an antiseptic lavender water. Its not only soothing and cleansing for wounds, but may be used as a wash for puffy eyes, bruises and skin irritations, such as eczema and psoriasis. Lavender is an excellent choice for hair, scalp and skin care. The water looks great and tastes even better than the purest filtered water. Did you know that lavender can be added to the post-filter of your home water filter to further purify the water? Once you get off this island, you might even want to try lemon, mint or cinnamon added to your water. While relaxing in your hammock, sipping from your coconut in the style of Thurston Howell III, a myriad of desert island bugs swarm around you. This scenario is far from perfect, otherwise you
Natures Pathways | January 2012

would have remembered to use the lavender as an insect repellent! Not to worry, though. Lavender essential oil can be used on insect bites and stings, like bees, because it breaks down the poison, reducing its toxicity. It has the same effect on poison ivy and poison oak. That snake shaking its tail at your feet isnt so scary either, when you remember that both lavender and tree oil can break down the poison of certain kinds of snakes. In fact, more than 100 years ago, travelling salesmen sold Australian tea tree oil to pioneers throughout the Old West. The oil was very effective against rattlesnake poison. Over time, though, shady salesmen sold a cheaper, ineffective product, hence the phrase, snake oil salesman. Dont worry about snakebite, though. You have already decided that you are probably going to have to try foods that youve never eaten before. But that doesnt include raw rattlesnake. Lets cook him! You spend the rest of the afternoon rubbing two sticks together. In the spirit of Ginger Grant and Mary Ann Summers, you have prepared Coconut Crawler over an open flame. Use lavender for any burns, including the sunburn you got today. Its your fantasy, so imagine that the Skipper and his little buddy have built a hut just for you. Lavender in a carrier oil will be very soothing on their sore muscles. And if the Skipper has stress-induced asthma, bronchitis or throat problems, a little lavender and lemon oil can be added to his vaporizer and humidifier. When its time to turn in you will fall fast asleep, because of lavenders sedative qualities. Inhale deeply as you massage your tummy with lavender massage oil. Lavender can aid in digestion, also. And thats just what you need after two pieces of Mary Anns coconut cream pie. This desert island scenario is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. It was used to show the many ways lavender can be used in our daily lives, and in some pretty tough situations. You might like to carry this oil with you throughout the day. It is probably something you should take on a three-hour tour.

Popular health myths debunked

ell-meaning parents or grandparents often tell children not to do something with the warning that a serious health implication could result. Kids often take their elders at their word. But some of these warnings bear more truth than others. Heres the scoop on some of the more common misconceptions.

Myth: swallowed chewing gum stays in the stomach for 7 years.

While chewing gum cannot be digested and is meant to be chewed and not swallowed, accidentally swallowing a piece here and there wont cause major issues. Thats because the gum will simply pass through the digestive system whole and come out with stool. If a large amount of gum is swallowed in a short period of time, then there could be issues, including constipation and intestinal blockage in children.

Myth: if you keep your eyes crossed too long, they will get stuck that way.

The muscles in the eye are just like any muscles elsewhere in the body. Although they may tire and get sore, they are relatively resilient and can take a lot of wear and tear. Crossing your eyes may tax these muscles, but you wont do any permanent harm. Rest assured that crossing the eyes will not leave them stuck that way.

This calculation is more for an infant whose head makes up a greater percentage of his or her body. In an adult, the figure is closer to 10 percent. Heat can escape from any exposed area of the body. Therefore, it is helpful to bundle up all areas of the body when spending time outdoors in the cold weather. The basis of this mantra is that when digesting food, the digestive system pulls blood away from the muscles and the idea is that you could cramp up and drown. While you may have less energy to swim vigorously, chances are you wont be so weak as to drown. Although many health myths prevail, knowing the truth can help parents educate their children better about which behaviors are safe and which are risky.

Myth: Covering your head is most important because you lose 75 percent of your body heat through it.

Myth: Going outside with wet hair will make you sick.

Myth: Dont swim right after eating.

Although you will feel colder stepping outside with a part of your body wet, it wont make you more susceptible to catching a cold. Researchers at the Common Cold Research Unit in England once tested a group of volunteers who were given the cold virus. One half of the group stayed in a warm room, while the others took a bath and stood wet in a hallway for a half hour. The wet group didnt catch more colds than the dry.

5 quick and easy ways to reset a mamas day

by kara s. anderson

eing a mother can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Being thanked in finger paintings and smiles can warm a mamas heart. But there are moments, sometimes long moments, when things maybe seem a little exhausting. A little thankless. A little, um, relentless. They say that the years are short, but the days are long. When those days start to feel a little out of control, here are 5 quick and easy things you can do to reset and begin again:

1. Wash your hands. You know those days, when a nice long shower would really change things? Those are usually the very days when a long, hot shower is entirely out of the question. The trick is using an all-natural soap with pure essential oils. Dr. Bronners soap, in lavender, peppermint or citrus, is helpful because they all have recharge properties. Peppermint invigorates, citrus brightens and lavender relaxes. As you wash your hands, breathe deeply and remember that you can always start over. With a clearer head and a lighter heart (and
21
Natures Pathways | January 2012

sure, cleaner hands!), you can reboot your day. 2. Drink a big glass of water. So often during a chaotic day, we forget even the simplest self-care. Hydration benefits every system in your body, so a large glass of water always helps. But just as important as the hydration is the chance to find stillness for a moment. As you drink 8 to 12 ounces of pure, fresh, clean water, think of how the water replenishes your whole system. Then offer a nice, refreshing drink to your children, too. 3. Take three deep breaths. There are times, as busy mothers, when we actually forget to breathe or at least how to breathe in a way that helps bring calmness. Imagine filling your belly with breath, and as you exhale, let the negative thoughts go. As you breathe in again, bring in joy, confidence, calm, patience or peace. Whatever you need is right there. Breathe it in and let the bad stuff go.
a 4. Practice few calming and centering yoga poses like downward dog, bridge

pose or legs-up-the-wall pose.

Again, slow and deliberate breathing is so valuable here. If you have an interest in yoga, it can be helpful to make some homemade yoga cards in advance. Find suggestions in a favorite book, or ask your teacher for a few simple poses that can help bring peace. Draw an image or write an explanation of the poses on index cards, and when your day starts to take a negative turn, turn it back around with a few relaxing poses. 5. Take a 15-minute walk A little fresh air and sunshine helps a lot. It can bring a huge shift to everyones day. Stop by the bakery, run an errand, or just put one foot in front of the other and walk. Even a short 15 minutes (which may be about all you can do in the winter) will help relieve stress. But once you get going, you may find yourself walking a lot longer. Walking has many benefits not the least of which is that it often helps children to rest peacefully when they return home. Without a doubt, motherhood is amazing. But when things dont necessarily feel that way, try a couple of these quick tips to get feeling better fast. By choosing change, you are not only setting a good example for your Kara S. to integrate holistic care into your pets health plan

resolve

in 2012,

By Jennifer Walla

olistic health care has become increasingly popular as those in the medical community recognize how a patients physical, psychological and social needs affect their overall health. That approach also makes perfect sense for our animal companions, says Dr. Jodie Gruenstern, owner and small animal veterinary practitioner at Animal Doctor Holistic Veterinary Complex, Muskego. The staff s mission there is to promote the prevention and treatment of disease through integrated

conventional and natural means for pets and their people, thus influencing a pets entire being in a complete and positive manner. Whats unique about a holistic approach is that it takes into consideration an animals mind, body and spirit, she explains. Instead of just diagnosing a disease and then prescribing a medication to treat it, we are able to use a variety of modalities to support the bodys ability to prevent disease or heal itself. We look at the animal as a whole to determine the best course of treatment. A 1987 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Jodie began integrating holistic pet care into her practice about 18 years ago. She has continued her education through the years, studying Chinese herbology and

acupuncture at the Chi Institute under world-renowned Dr. Huisheng Xie. Client education and preventative care are our priorities, she says, and treatment of your pet companion could consist of conventional drugs, nutraceuticals, herbal remedies or perhaps surgical intervention. Acupuncture, spinal manipulation, massage or essential oils are just a few of the valuable tools we can use to help make an animal happy and healthy. Dr. Jodie says integrative pet care means combining the best of the allopathic (conventional) and holistic worlds to affect the best treatment plan for your pet. Sometimes a conventional drug or surgery is the necessary treatment, but an herbal product may minimize side effects or acupuncture may ease post-op pain or influence healing. We stock and utilize some conventional drugs as preventatives or treatments, including vaccines and flea and tick products. But in many cases, we may actually discourage their use and educate a client as to the safety and benefits of titre testing instead of excessive vaccinating or neem and essential oil blends for parasite control, she says. Its important to assess each situation very individually when recommending prevention or treatment protocols. A proponent of natural nutrition and raw diets, Dr. Jodie believes a pets diet is crucial to supporting the immune and digestive systems thereby contributing to an overall healthy balance. Theres a lot of truth to the phrase you are what you eat, she says. Dogs and cats are carnivores and digest meat protein better than plant protein. Conventional veterinarians know corn and wheat are common food allergens, which often stimulate dermatitis. Holistic veterinarians consider highly-processed grain diets to be inflammatory or contribute to Damp Accumulations, from the Eastern perspective. Therefore, we are supportive of the raw meat diet or at least natural

diets, especially canned diets with less processed grain, more moisture, more meat-based, and no artificial preservatives such as BHT, BHA, or ethoxyquin. The Animal Doctor Retail Shoppe stocks a perfect mix of the best quality raw, freeze-dried, kibble and canned natural diets and treats. We have seven freezers on the premises and we re-stock those each week, she says. We also explain how these diets and whole food supplements can be used to prevent and treat many common ailments such as inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, arthritis, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease and cancer. If you cant come to the clinic, well ship them to you. The Animal Doctor dispensary stocks standard veterinary pharmaceuticals as well as an extensive array of nutraceuticals, western and Chinese herbals. Medicine may include conventional antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, cardiac drugs or dewormers. Natural remedies may be homeopathic, herbal, glandular or essential oils. Jodi Congers Bishon, Serena, is just one of the many success stories seen at the clinic. She brought Serena in for treatment of eye ulcers and high blood pressure. Dr. Jodie treated the ulcers with haliotis powder and the blood pressure with hawthorne. The ulcers are completely gone and her blood pressure is down from 180 to 140, Conger says. Jeff and Alison Riedi have been using Dr. Jodie since 1987 and say there are several instances where she went above and beyond to provide the best care for their animals. For example, their 8-year-old beagle poodle mix was having severe back pain/spasms. Another vet had recommended surgery as a cure. But Dr. Jodies advice was to try acupuncture along with chiropractic. To shorten the story, our dog needed one acupuncture treatment and had two chiropractic visits a year. She lived to 16 and never had surgery. Our two present dogs, Gizmo and Penny, love their visits with Dr. Jodie

start the new Year with feng shui

by Nancy Freier
Spiritual dragon guardian found on traditional Chinese doors.

eng Shui is the art and science of placement of our possessions in our environment, and chi is the unifying principle of energy linking everything together. Chi is the leading factor affecting human life. It is the force that creates mountains and volcanoes, directs streams and rivers, and determines the colors and shapes of trees and plants. In feng shui, experts look for veins of nourishing chi and then channel and refine it to enrich the lives of residents. When our possessions are properly placed according to the basic principles of feng shui, they support proper chi flow the underlying aim of feng shui. After analyzing the chi flow, feng shui experts untangle knots that block happiness and the attainment of ones goals and hopes.

Lets begin this year by putting on our feng shui eyes and look at our surroundings in a completely new way. When we do this, we begin to realize that everything has an effect on us. The chi of a house affects its atmosphere and its inhabitants. Consider that in some places we feel comfortable and happy, while in others we feel anxious or depressed. Some places seem lively and bright, others cold, dank and overbearing. A beautiful entry way will lift the energy and lift our mood, while a jammed garage or cluttered closet depletes the energy and depresses us.

Basic principles of feng shui

1. Everything is alive (with chi) by the associations and memories we have attached to them. Most of our things have very specific memories, so we want to be sure these are good ones. 2. Everything is interconnected. Being in good relationship with the things around us creates good chi. Our careers, our knowledge, our health, our finances, our reputation everything is connected. 3. Everything is changing all the time. Rather than trying to put a brake on change, in feng shui we embrace change and allow our environment to change with us.

Feng shui guidelines

Put safety and comfort first, live with what you love, and stay organized and up-to-date. As parents, we childproof our homes so our children dont get hurt. Well, lets do the same thing for adults! Choose furniture thats nice to you. Avoid sharp corners and edges on tables, counter tops or other furnishings. If youre in the design stage, have the architect remove protruding walls and corners that you could walk into. Gate open stairwells, remove throw rugs or other items that could cause you to slip and fall. In a room where you spend a lot of time, such as your bedroom or office, you want to be in the power position (the far left corner as you face the room) whenever possible. If positioning yourself there isnt possible, then we want to hang a mirror to reflect the doorway.

Organize your home

Every home has what I call creative chaos which is any work-in-progress a desk top with current paperwork on it; an art studio or sewing room with a project laid out thats currently being worked on. This is active chaos and usually does not cause any problems. Its when these projects dont get finished and pile up, and you have no idea whats under there. This is called passive chaos or stuff thats gone unconscious. One client literally threw herself in front of a closet door to stop me from opening it. When I explained there are no hiding places in feng shui, she reluctantly let go of the door handle. When I opened the door, stuff was piled to the ceiling and came tumbling down on me! There were clothes at the bottom of the pile that fit her 8-year-old son who was now 28! Clutter stagnates energy. Intuitively I sense it as a lake with stagnant water; murky and clogged. Resolve to remove the clutter, and something remarkable always happens! When we let go of stuff that is no longer serving us, we open the door to attract things we truly love. Its a wonderful cycle. Make it a wonderful year!

smart Fitness: Tackle your goals in 2012 the right way!

by Jim young, b.s., c.s.c.s.

ow that the holidays are over and excuses are a thing of the past, it is time to perform. A lot of us drag our butts out of bed, get into the gym and take on our goals that we deeply expressed to our friends, co-workers and whoever else was willing to listen. This is a good start because whatever motivates us to get going, do it! I for one am not going to hold anyone back from trying to increase their health and wellbeing. I say, Congratulations on taking that first important step. That said, it seems as though there are many, many choices as to what program is best for us to do because each program claims to be the best ever! They also make you think you can do this in less than a blink of an eye and still get amazing results! Sounds too good to be true because it is! You need time to devote for your exercise routine and it takes time to understand how your body adjusts to the demands you place on it. Nothing flashy about that! The purpose of this article is to inform you about choosing the right program at the right time and what to expect vs. what they will tell you what you will achieve. The main thing you need is self-awareness. You need to be honest with yourself. Ask yourself, Can I do this? What is my fitness level? Most of us tend to think

we are invincible and can take on anything. Tell us you cant and its go time! Its human nature to think that way when we are challenged. So when all the hype is peaking post Jan. 1, we sign up for a fitness class, a gym, or buy a DVD and jump right in not knowing what our body can handle and not being prepared for the challenge. Most of us after starting anew can barely move the next day without grabbing on to a co-worker or make it up the stairs without wincing and whining about what a workout that was! Sound familiar? You also need to understand that if you are new to fitness (your experience of working out is 0-3 months), you need a foundation. What I am referring to is building your body from the ground up. You wouldnt build or buy a house without a foundation, would you? Didnt think so! You need strength training, cardiovascular and an overview of your nutritional needs. Start out testing your cardiovascular fitness, take notes on what feels good, comfortable and challenging. Your body also needs time to adjust to strength training because muscle strength can develop faster than tendon strength. If you are too intense with strength training in the beginning, this can lead to injuries faster deep within a particular joint such as the knee, hip, or shoulder. Explosive movements such as plyometrics place a great demand on the overall connective tissue

no matter your level, ask questions, look for help and voice your concern if needed because if you dont, only you will pay for it in the long run.
due to its fast and quick responses. Nutrition is vital for optimal recovery. Its not just calories; its the right kind of calories such as lean proteins, good carbs, proper fats, and balancing them together to formulate the right combination for you. I am not saying you cant have certain indulgences, but this needs to be taken seriously in order for you to succeed. Now lets talk about those of you who have some experience with fitness and those who opt to take it to an exceptional level. Guess whatyou still have to keep that foundation in tact in order for your body to properly respond to exercises and intensities above the norm. Intensities can reach levels you may never thought you could do which triggers even higher emotions, but you also ride a fine line of injury at that point. Safety is always first, but often times neglected because we want to succeed at any cost. We live in a fast-paced society and the trend is to get as much work in as possible in the least amount of time which is not a bad thing if you are ready for it! Higher intensities that involve jumping, sliding, swinging, throwing, etc. are great for those who have a solid foundation, but for those who are new to the game, you need to take extra precaution due to the nature of the impact, stretch-reflex, and high intensities or else youll end up on the sidelines. All I am saying is be smart about what you are getting into whether its a class, with a friend or on your own. No matter your level, ask questions, look for help and voice your concern if needed because if you dont, only you will pay for it in the long run. If you need some assistance as to how to tackle this, there are solutions. They are called certified personal trainers/coaches. Find one! Any qualified and trusted trainer should allow you to ask questions and provide some insight on what to do. If they dont, ask for a referral. Its best to sign-on for a period of time and let him/her guide you in the right direction. What we do here for new clients is offer a jumpstart program called 2-Days of Free Fitness. This is for anyone and it allows us to meet you, discuss your goals and tailor a program for your needs, plus teach you the principles of long-term fitness to help guide you in the right direction no matter what age, ability or limitation you may have. I have worked with hundreds of different people with all different levels of fitness from youth to active older adults. We have many opportunities for those who want to improve their health, look, ability, and function. I would like the opportunity to work with you. Just remember to be smart, and ask! Go get em!

age has been used for centuries as a spice and seasoning in cooking and as a remedy for hoarseness, coughs, and sore mouths and throats. In ancient times it even was thought to extend life. Historically, sage was used as a fertility drug in ancient Egypt. Physicians in ancient Greece used a solution of sage and water to stop wounds from bleeding and to clean sores and ulcers. Today, sage is used for mouth and throat inflammation, indigestion and excessive sweating. Sage is also used as an ingredient in some dietary supplements for mouth, throat and gastrointestinal problems. Some people may use sage to improve mood, or boost memory or mental performance.

How sage is used

Sage is available as dried leaves, liquid extracts and sprays, and essential oils.

What the science says

Sage has not been well studied as a treatment for sore throat, so there is little scientific evidence to support its use for that ailment. Two small studies suggest that sage may improve mood and mental performance in healthy young people and memory and attention in older adults. Results of another small clinical study suggest that a sage extract was better than placebo at enhancing thinking and learning in older adults with mild to moderate Alzheimers disease. Laboratory studies suggest that essential oils from sage may have antimicrobial properties.

side effects and cautions

Sage is generally regarded as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is approved for food use as a spice or seasoning. However, some species of sage contain thujone, which can affect the nervous system. Extended use or taking large amounts of sage leaf or oil may result in restlessness, vomiting, vertigo, rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, and kidney damage. It also may

How to choose music for yoga

by Dennis hawk

f you have ever been to a rock concert and sat somewhere near the speakers you know already that sound generates energy. You also quickly become aware that the ears are not the only physical receptor of music when that gentleman pulls up next to you in his car who has installed stadium-sized speakers in his trunk and the change that you had so carefully stack on your dash board for the next toll comes sliding down into your lap. Every cell in the human body is a receptor of sound. It makes sense then that yoga, a science based in energy movement, would use music as one of its tools. Every human body is a tuning fork designed to give and receive the energy of sound. Having said that, it is important to choose music that fits your yoga practice. Here are some hints that may help you in choosing music for your own yoga or for your yoga class if you are a teacher. According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the objective of yoga is to calm the mind: yogah cittavtti nirodhah literally means Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. So, if the objective of yoga is to calm the mind remember this: Music can trigger memories and evoke emotions. More complicated music with a plethora of dissonant chords creates complicated thought processes. The brain is always trying to figure things out, including music lines. Loud music creates excitement, anger or fear. And lyrics? If the lyrics are in English (and, for many, Spanish), the mind will follow right along with the lyric. It sounds like picking a music playlist for yoga would be almost impossible, but not so. There are some guidelines that keep us pointing toward the objective of yoga...to quiet the mind. Here they are: Pick music that fits the style of yoga that you are doing. You probably wouldnt want to use a Deva Premal selection in a Power Yoga Class unless it was in Shivasana. You clearly want rhythm during the namaskar (stronger) section of the yoga class. Stay away from any melodies that are familiar because it will

immediately create memories, making the mind drift from the practice. Try to stick with music that is structurally simple. You dont want fast-paced guitar shredding or a saxophone running scales. (East Indian music is often played over a drone with one chord). Pick instrumental music or music that is sung in a language that is unfamiliar to you and to your class (maybe Sanskrit). Keep the volume of the music at a level that does not disturb the mind; and in the case of a class, so that the teachers instructions are easily heard. Yoga is changing America and America is changing yoga. We Americans love our music and we will surely figure out ways to blend our passion for music with our love for yoga.

To leave (or not to leave) your retirement plan when you leave your employer

hen you leave a job whether due to layoff or for any reason you are often faced with a decision about your 401(k) or other retirement plans. The decision is whether to keep your 401(k) funds with your former employer, roll them over to an IRA, or pay the taxes and cash out. Over time, many employees have accumulated substantial balances in these employer plans which are designed for tax-advantaged retirement savings. For this reason, it is wise to understand the implications of each option. Some employers offer the opportunity to maintain your retirement account at the company. On the other hand, by rolling over your funds to an IRA, you can maintain control, manage the funds any way you want, and remain subject to IRA rules alone rather than the limited investment selection and perhaps restrictive distribution policies of your former employer. Note, however, that while you are permitted to take loans from your 401(k) plan, this is not possible in an IRA, and depending on the investments used to fund the IRA, charges and expenses could be higher or lower than those you would incur inside your 401(k) plan. At your direction, your employer can transfer your distribution directly to another qualified plan or to a rollover IRA. A rollover occurs when you withdraw cash or other assets from one eligible retirement plan and contribute all or part of it within 60 days to another eligible retirement plan. Under this option, you would direct your plan administrator to make a direct and tax-free transfer of funds from your former employers plan to a rollover IRA at a financial institution of your choice. That way you maintain

By rolling over, your funds have the potential to continue to grow tax-deferred.
the tax-deferred status of your retirement account, consolidate all retirement accounts for easier management, and benefit from increased investment flexibility. When you roll over a retirement plan distribution, you generally dont have to pay tax on it until later when you take cash withdrawals. By rolling over, your funds have the potential to continue to grow tax-deferred. Job changers should resist the temptation to spend down their retirement savings, whether they are moving to a new job or plan a hiatus from work. When you fail to roll over, you not only pay tax on the amount you receive, but you may, if you are under age 59 1/2, be subject to an additional 10 percent penalty on the early distribution you receive. Sound financial planning dictates that you would draw on other funds first, leaving retirement plan spending as a last resort.

Job changers should resist the temptation to spend down their retirement savings, whether they are moving to a new job or plan a hiatus from work.
If you are simply moving your IRA from one institution to another and you do not plan to use the funds, you should consider making an IRA transfer and not a rollover. This is a simple direct transfer from IRA to IRA between financial institutions to better manage and grow your retirement assets.

Low speed electric vehicles now available for many uses

by bob Mair

ne of the challenges of satisfying transportation needs for many companies is deciding whether to purchase vehicles that serve multiple purposes or purchasing vehicles to fit specific needs. Multi-purpose vehicles typically involve a lower initial investment rather than purchasing multiple specialty vehicles. Low speed electric vehicles can be the perfect solution for this issue. LSVs are now available to suit a wide variety of uses. From refuse hauling to food delivery to moving people, on the street or around your campus, theres probably an LSV made to fit your needs. The purchase price of an LSV can easily be one-half to onethird the price of a full speed truck. The use of LSVs will allow you to expand your fleet to fit your needs, while keeping your transportation budget under control. Electric LSVs cost just pennies per mile to operate, so your monthly expenses get some relief, too. Star EV and Columbia ParCar have made great strides in expanding their specialty vehicle lineups recently. If moving cargo is your goal, these companies offer electric flatbed haulers with beds from 6 to 8 in length and over one ton of cargo capacity. A truck with a dump bed is available, too. With 900 lb. capacity and a hydraulic bed, this unit is perfect for grounds keeping purposes. Taking the dump bed a step further is the refuse truck, equipped with a dump box with 45 tall sides. For towing purposes, Columbia ParCar now offers the Rovr, an electric tow vehicle that can pull up to 6,000 lbs., if properly equipped. The Columbia StockChaser, at only 30 wide, can haul up to 1,200 lbs. of cargo in and out of tight spaces in your warehouse. If people hauling is what you need, Star EV offers a variety of electric alternatives. Shuttle 4-14 passengers in clean, quiet electric style. These units can move people from parking lot to front door quickly and efficiently. Star also makes people movers that can transport up to eleven people, and also has a built in hydraulic lift wheelchair ramp. These vehicles are ideal for parking shuttles, campus or park tours, or factory tours, as electric power allows for use inside or out. If you need to keep going when the going gets tough, the new Star Stalker is what you need. With on-the-fly lock in of 4-wheel drive, the Stalker is perfect for rough terrain and nasty weather. Quiet, pollution-free, electric operation makes it great for hunting,

too. The flip seat allows you to travel with 4 people or with 2 people and extra cargo. One thing all of these unique LSVs have in common is efficiency. You can travel up to 40 miles on a charge, and the cost of charging is less than $2. Compare that to the cost of fossil fuels. The initial investment to purchase an electric LSV can be as low as $10,000. You may be able to purchase two or even three LSVs for the price of one conventional unit. This means less down time for your employees and higher productivity for you. Add to that the efficiency of having a vehicle designed to perform a specific task and the productivity gains could be a real profit builder for your company. There are LSVs available for just about any commercial use you may have. Visit the Web site below to find the right one for you! To learn more about the low speed vehicles featured in this article, visit www.meelift.com and click on the Columbia ParCar or Star EV links. For more information about purchasing your own LSV, e-mail Bob Mair, Major Account/Fleet Manager at bmair@meelift.com.
Bob Mair has been employed with MEE Material Handling since 2006. He moved into the sale of LSVs in 2008, and has sold LSVs to residential and commercial customers throughout Wisconsin. He has participated in advanced product training programs with Columbia ParCar and Star EV. Bob has participated in many events throughout Wisconsin to teach the public the benefits of LSVs and electric powered vehicles.

Emu oil: natures miracle

by The agency

o what is an emu anyway? While its true that its a large, flightless bird similar to an ostrich, its the emus uniquely intriguing characteristics that have grounded it in history. According to many sources, the emu has been around more than 40,000 years. Unlike the ostrich, which has only two toes, the emu is a therapod. Three toes at the end of each of its long skinny legs brought the emu even more fame in 2006 when paleontologists began studying its gate to learn how dinosaurs may have walked. Of course, all birds are descendants of the dinosaur, but the emu, a native of Australia, evolved into what might be considered a medicinal gift from nature. Australian Aborigines reaped the benefits of emu by-products for thousands of years. Their secrets were introduced to the United States with the first imported emu almost 80 years ago. Today, more than 1 million emu grace the U.S. soil providing a source for natures miracle. Whats so great about the emu? Theyre not particularly cute or cuddly creatures, and they dont really have any special talents, but its what theyre made of that really makes the difference. Emu oil has become the stuff legends are made of in

The great thing about natural ingredients, like emu oil, is that they wont clog pores, which means they wont propagate yet more skin irritation. Theyre simply soothing and healing.
the realm of skin care and beauty products. Its comprised of 20 percent Omega 6 acid, 2 percent Omega 3 acid, vitamin E, vitamin A, sapogens, turpines, linoleic acid and oleic acid. So what does that mean for skin care and beauty? Emu oil acts as an antioxidant, healing agent, skin repairer and softener, antiseptic, joint and muscle pain reliever, skin cell regenerator and anti-wrinkle ointment all in one. With hundreds of testimonials about emu oils rejuvenating effects on the skin, its become all the rage of the beauty and skin care industry. Emu oil is also known as an antiinflammatory, anti-itch agent thats effective on skin conditions such psoriasis and eczema. The make-up of emu oil is said to be the closest to the bodys own natural oils, which is why its believed to absorb so well when applied topically. Emu oil penetrates deep into the layers of the skin, helping to moisturize and repair skin at the cellular level. Many users have claimed to notice appearancealtering results within a few weeks of daily use. While emu oil is a completely natural substance with no chemicals, its safe to use on all skin types, and it wont irritate rashes or open wounds. If emu oil is so great for anti-aging, healing and clearing dry, irritated skin and rashes, why isnt it more readily available in common over-the-counter skin care and beauty products? One reason may be that emu oil is often not included in common brands because its rather pricy. However, in Wisconsin, at least one skin care and beauty expert has partnered with a local emu farmer to make its incredible healing properties more affordable. Caitlin Brotz, owner of Oliv 426, is no stranger to the benefits of all natural skin care and beauty products. She founded her shop and brand based on the idea that the finest skin care ingredients move from earth to body. The most wonderful attribute of natural ingredients is that, of course, the bodys skin drinks them in with ease. After all, our skin is perfectly natural, and the topical care and beauty aids we apply should be perfectly natural as well, says Brotz. Emu oil, in particular, has an incredible healing effect thats visible. Its a powerful moisturizer that evens the look and tone of skin by reducing inflammation and redness while prompting a noticeable difference in skin texture. Its been used as an antiwrinkle treatment for years. Brotz also notes, The great thing about natural ingredients, like emu oil, is that they wont clog

pores, which means they wont propagate yet more skin irritation. Theyre simply soothing and healing. Brotzs own brand of Oliv 426 Emu Whipped Lotion is made fresh in her downtown Sheboygan store. She whips it up on site with distilled water and bees wax, blending the emu oil into a rich silky lotion to which fragrances may be added for that uniquely personal touch. A two ounce jar of Oliv 426 Whipped Emu Lotion sells for only $8 and a four ounce jar sells for $15. At Oliv, were very fortunate to have partnered with a local emu farmer to extend the benefits of the oil at such a great price. Not only are we able to offer our emu lotion at such an affordable price, but were also very proud to support local businesses as much as possible, extending energy-saving benefits to the environment as well, states Brotz. When purchased in the store, customers can either make and package Oliv products themselves, or simply choose a freshly premade jar. Of course, at Oliv, once the products are depleted, the containers may be brought back to purchase a refill at a discounted price encouraging waste reduction through reuse.

Tips from Tony

You say you want a resolution
by Tony bednarowski

ell, here we are at the turn of yet another new year. 2011 has come and gone, leaving us wanting a fresh, new start. For many of us, the turn of a new year marks a starting point for some major life change. Yes, the resolution is upon us. With that said, what would your best guess be for the number one New Years resolution in our country? If you thought weight loss, you are absolutely correct, so please read on. First, lets look at a few facts. Then let me help you make your resolution your reality. Did you know that more than 80 percent of all the people who lose weight regain the lost weight, and often a bit extra? According to research from the National Weight Control Registry, the relapse rate may be as high as 95 percent. This tells me that a lot of people have lost weight but very few keep it off permanently. So we really dont have a weight loss problem, but rather a weight relapse problem. As we promise ourselves that this is going to be our year, were very ambitious. But like so many others, its not a well-thought-out plan. With no real road map in place, its like driving across the country in the middle of the night without headlights, expecting to reach your destination. Thats exactly why there are so many people with good intentions, but their New Years resolutions soon fade from their thoughts after the first big pig outcome Super Bowl time. With any good intention you must have a well-thought-out plan on how you are going to reach your destination. Lets lay the ground work and make it visual. This will ultimately be your map to success.

You may have set goals but where are they on your priority list? If this is not a top priority then it will soon fall off of your list. Simply put, make it your first priority.

PriOriTizE

FOCus

Set your goals and put them in writing. This will keep them in your mind, affirming daily a clearer picture of what your intentions are. I suggest making a vision board, which is basically a collage of images and writings that are visual reminders of what youre striving for. Visualization techniques are very powerful. I believe that if you dont have a plotted vision board, how can you have a vision?

Going it alone is tough with any endeavor. Getting people to rally behind you when the challenge gets hard will keep you on track. Find a fitness partner, a mentor or coach, family, friends, your spouse any people you can count on for information and emotional support.

ACCOunTABiLiTY

Keep score for your own accountability. Measurements, progress charts, weight records and a food and training journal are all great self-accountability trackers. Also seek outside accountability from someone you trust that is in your camp. Reporting to someone with your results will keep the accountability factor honest.

Think short- and long-term realistic expectations. Weight loss comes in unpredictable spurts. Remember this going in, when you set up shop, so to speak. Average healthy weight loss is about 1 to 2 pounds per week. You will have big weeks, small weeks and weeks where seemingly nothing happens, at least according to the scale. So be patient and dont throw in the towel at the first sign of a plateau. Stick to your plan; you will overcome.

PATiEnCE

You absolutely must find balance. Dont take your eating plan or your workouts to the extreme. Dont live with the all or nothing rule. Remember if you want this to last then it must be looked at as a marathon and not a sprint. Let the I want it all attitude go and instead shoot for slow and steady. Your patience will be well rewarded.

BALAnCE

PLAn

Notice how many times I have stressed planning and visualizing. In order to be successful at anything you must have a well thought out plan. There is no such thing as winging it to success. Again, get it on paper. Write down your eating and workout plans. Prioritize by setting up your weekly schedule. Take the time to do it for you. I dont have time or I forgot are excuses that ultimately keep you from your goal.

PErsOnALizE

Make your nutrition and training program fit you and your needs. Make it adapt around your personality, lifestyle, schedule, disposition and body type. This is the only way you will incorporate it into your lifestyle and make it a permanent placement.
