The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary selfdenial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Year of the Eucharist 2010-2011 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal 2012 Please Make a Generous Gift

February 19, 2012

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

# Registered Families Account White Envelopes Non-envelope users This weeks total Weekly Budget *Difference* Green Envelopes* (Mortgage) Restricted Budget** Difference Gold Envelopes 67 92 1400 No. 384 Households Amount $11,236.00 $2,644.00 $13,880.00 $12,692.00 + $1,188.00 $1,711.00 $1,731.00 - $20.00 $1,043.00 $962.00

This week, you are asked to review the Annual Appeal tabloid that you have received with your bulletin today. The Annual Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable over ten months. A significant gift to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget of the Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the CMAA, please reflect on Gods gifts to you. Everything we have is a blessing from God. Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the work of the church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. He never forgets you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our diocese and how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry, and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the important work of our diocese that cant be done as individuals or at the parish level. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal in paid pledges, 50% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. If you have received a refund for the success of your parishs 2011 Appeal, it is important to mention that in this announcement.

Thank you for helping us make up the difference)

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
CHRIST THE KING FINANCE COUNCIL Meeting minutes for January 18, 2012 The Finance Council met on the evening of January 18th. Rick Cosenza, Lori Bhardwaj, Brian Carnahan, Elaine Ward, and Father Peter. We opened in prayer, and Jill Placey joined us to provide an update on the school. All is well at the school. The Diocese approved of us opening a new preschool class for next school year. Financially, we are current on all bills, and expenses are in line with expectations. The Christmas collection came in at $29,800 which was less than what was budgeted. Nevertheless, we truly appreciate all those who have contributed. On a positive note, giving in December was up 5% over the previous year. The increase is likely due to the Annual Stewardship Appeal where nearly 300 families have committed to give a little extra in the coming year. Our next meeting is scheduled for February 15th.

The Knights of Columbus wish to thank all who attended our parish Pancake Breakfast on Sunday February 12. Another 4 star breakfast was served along with good fellowship. Proceeds of the breakfast will go to St Vincent DePaul Society Food Pantry. Save the date for our annual Fish Fry on Friday March 30. We are planning another 4 star meal and the proceeds will be donated to Christ the King Mortgage. Knights of Columbus are Catholic men, 18 years of age and older, who are committed to making their community a better place, while supporting their Church. For more information please contact Ed Schuman.

2012 Lent Living my Lent with two short prayers in mind

Reflections from the Deacon For Lent this year Im suggesting a focus on two silent prayers said before and after the Gospel reading at each Mass. Many of us, before the Gospel, make a triple sign of the cross on the forehead, the lips and over the heart. Many have been taught to say a prayer as we do this. My prayer for many years has expanded to be May the Lord be on my mind, on my lips and in my heart so that I may worthily proclaim His Holy Gospel by the way I live my life. At the end of the Gospel, as the priest or deacon kisses the Gospel reading, he silently says By the words of the Holy Gospel may my sins be blotted out. These two prayers provide sufficient focus for our lives during Lent. They provide input for planning the day in the morning and reviewing it at the end of each day. How will I/how did I lead my life so that I would proclaim the Gospel in every aspect of my life? How did I fall short of this focus so that I might ask forgiveness from God and from anyone I may have offended? Of course the Gospel has to be part of our daily focus. Make it the center of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Pray/listen to the daily Gospel and perhaps supplement this with additional Gospel reading and study. Let fasting occur by lessening time for entertainment and focusing on the Gospel. In these days of computers, smart phones and other devices that are internet connected, the Gospel of the day and other sources are readily available. Through USCCB.ORG you can read and/or listen to the readings of the day. There is also a video reflection for the day. Similarly, there is a free APP Catholic Online which is a treasure for prayer. Again you can read/listen to the readings of the day as well as read a reflection. The Liturgy of the Office and many prayer and resource materials are available. Some may find it convenient, or do penance by doing the inconvenient, to listen to Relevant Radio (930 or 950 AM) between 5AM and 6AM Monday thru Friday. Their program Daybreak is an hour of Morning Prayer opportunities: Office of Readings and Morning Prayer from the Divine Office, a teaching from the Pope, a dramatized reading of the Gospel, and a variety of prayer, reflective and inspirational readings. Listen to all or parts you have time for. For almsgiving, donations to these sources would be appropriate. Grow in ways that reflect your efforts to demonstrate the Gospel in the way you live your life. Seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that your sins may be completely blotted out. On a personal note thank you to parishioners and staff for their prayers and cards during my recovery from surgery. Lets pray for all those in our parish and world who are sick and suffering, for those who do not have health care benefits. Deacon Frank

Heritage Celebration Mass Sunday, March 4, 2012 At the Noon Mass

Christ the King would like to celebrate all of the heritages that we serve, some include but not limited to Spanish, Filipino, Polish, Indian, Latin and German. Each of these heritages will be reflected in the Mass. We are asking participation from all heritages to be present, wear their native dress, and to bring a sampling of their favorite native dish. After the Mass we will have a social gathering in the parish life center to celebrate heritage with hospitality. We ask that when you bring your dish that you make a card label with the name of the dish and the Heritage in which it represents.

Saturday, February 25, 2012 11:00am-12:30pm in church

Are you looking for a way to get your child involved in your parish? Altar Servers are essential members in the Liturgy, much like the Eucharist Ministers, Lectors (readers), Ushers and Choir members. Their presence and attendance is vital to the Liturgy. Altar Servers are the primary assistant of those who preside over the Mass. Therefore, Altar Serving is NOT a mere childrens activity it is a LITURGICAL MINISTRY. It is a privilege and an important responsibility to undertake and should NOT be taken lightly or for granted. The word SERVICE is the emphasis in the title Altar Server. It is Gods calling to serve Him by serving His people. But when you DO answer the call to serve, it will require a great amount of commitment and sacrifice. And in this case, all service, efforts and activities must include, not just the altar server, but also their parents. The minimum requirements to become an Altar Server are that: 1) they must be Baptized, 2) they must have already received their First Communion, 3) the family must be registered in Christ the King Parish, 4) be at least in the Grade 4 (or entering 4th grade this fall) Please fill out this form and return it to your teacher or drop it in the collection basket during mass attention Mrs. Sherry Rochford.

The HHS Mandate: An Attack on Rights of Conscience

Never before has federal law forced citizens to purchase what violates their deeply held beliefs and ethical convictions. But now the current Administration is forcing Christians to act as if pregnancy were a disease to be prevented at all costs. For many Americans, this means choosing between violating our consciences and forgoing health care -- literally an unconscionable dilemma. Our country's longstanding laws protecting conscience rights must now apply fully to the implementation of health care reform. For that we need more than rule-making, we need a law. The bishops are urging Congress to support the "Respect for Rights of Conscience Act" in light of the new HHS rule and the "unprecedented threat to religious freedom" it poses. For co-sponsors, please check H.R. 1179 and S. 1467 at: thomas.loc.gov. For more information go to www.uscb.org.

All are invited to an evening with Mary Konieczy, a parishioner and one of our cantors, who is the Hospice Liaison for Lexington Hospice. Mary will be providing an informative overview of what hospice is and what we can provide for patients and families in the Christ the King Parish Community. Please join us in the Parish Life Center at: 7PM, Monday, February 27th, 2012. For more information contact the rectory @ 630-6291717 Deacon Peter Robinson, deacon Peter@ctklombard.org

FOR TEENS
A Lenten experience for Teens The Church needs YOU!!!
We need your enthusiasm, natural energy and idealism! The role of young people in the Church is to show others that we are a living Church, alive and well, and ready to serve. The Eucharist is central to our Identity as Catholic Christians. Join us on Tuesday evenings in Lent and find out how we can share this truth with the world we live in every day! We will begin February 21st with an orientation night of games and food at 7:00 PM. We will meet in the School building. Call Sherry Rochford for more information.

We teach the children to fast, pray and give away. Join us for our Ash Wednesday Family Service at 5:00 PM to get your materials for Living the Eucharist. As Catholic Christians we believe that all things created by God are good. We believe foremost that human beings are created in the image and likeness of God. We are what we are and no matter our belief, our heritage or our financial situation, we are to be respected. It is our right to expect dignified treatment. It is our responsibility to make sure that these rights are being upheld. During our Lenten Season, think about the less fortunate and pray for them. Pray for our politicians who have the ability to make the changes we need to ensure that all life is protected from conception to tomb. Pray also for a changed heart in all those who would see life as disposable, and the poor as unworthy of our assistance.

Living the Eucharist
