Dear Parents

detail how we are delivering the intent of the national curriculum. This evening is totally voluntary and informal but it IS an opportunity to discuss just what is going on. If this is something you are interested in or have often wondered why and how we do things, then hopefully we'll see you next Wednesday, 29th February at 7.30pm.

Already there is a lot going on swimming, athletics, learning programmes - the life of school is all go for 2012! A huge thank you to all the parents who are helping out with our afternoon swimming programme. It is greatly appreciated. We are also looking forward to having another successful day at the athletics next week. This is a huge day with all the Southern Zone schools and students involved. Again, your help and support on this day is vital to the smooth

running of such a huge event. Next week I want to start a series of Parent info evenings. This is where you will have the chance to come along and ask questions and talk about what school does for your child and how the learning environment has changed from when we were at school. We will also look at the difference between the year level your child is and how this is different from the curriculum level that they will be working on. The school has a curriculum framework that we structure to

This week, the senior team (Y3-6) are completing a series of national P.A.T. tests. These give us a range of next steps for the children with their learning targets and helps teachers plan their classroom programme.

Week 4 Term 1
MANUKA (R6) - are keeping up with the big fish at swimming. We have plenty of parents helping to make things run smoothly and keep the groups small. Already we have seen an increase in confidence and children keen to give new learning a go. We have set some swimming goals and are making a book using 'comic life' to present our ideas. A big welcome to Corban and to Makayla who both joined our team this week. Certificates: Hailey Monaghan for writing the titles in her reading log by herself and to Niall Carter for working hard on his letters and sounds. TOTARA (R7) are settling into the routine of swimming sessions and are looking forward to showing heaps of amazing progress. Certificates: Brock Rogan for showing initiative by helping out others and always having great manners! Calvin Jenkins for writing an awesome acrostic poem about himself !

KOWHAI (R2) have been finding out about Kowhai trees. We worked together to make our own tree! We know that Kowhai means yellow. Did you know that colours have meanings? Yellow means happy and energetic. We think its a great colour for our happy and energetic classroom! We have been learning other Maori colour words this week too. It has been exciting to start swimming- we are all working hard to achieve our goals. Certificates: Scott Hoffman

RIMU (R3) Room Rimu are having fun at Splash Palace. I know that this can be a very tiring time for the children, so early nights can really help! Try and keep homework time "short and sweet" One of our caterpillars has turned into a chrysalis while the other will turn into one soon. Come in and have a look, the children will be able to tell you all about it. Certificates: Lily McAra, Aiden McKenzie

RATA (R4) This week we found a bug on the library cushions. If you want to see a photo of it have a look on our blog. The children are enjoying swimming and are already becoming more confident in the water. We are focusing on survival skills. There is no assembly because of swimming. Have a good week, Evelyn. Certificates: Sophie Jukes, Nick Brown

MIRO (R5) Miro are enjoying swimming :-) A big thank you to all the parent help and support. Mrs Carr said I am doing great in my swimming - Jayden I keep on sinking - Anneka I enjoy backstroke - Hannah I am improving my arm stroke - Blake C It is fun and I am improving - Olivia A reminder that book club orders are due in on Friday please. Certificates: Ashley Phillips, Riley Smith, Timothy Holloway

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB 2012 There will be one book club issued each term. Each class gets age appropriate brochures. Children will usually get 2 different brochures each time the book club is issued. You are under no pressure to purchase, but the orders we do receive give back to the school free books and resources. XMAS VOUCHERS: If you ordered books in the last issue in 2011 you will have received a voucher for $2 off. This is the only issue you can spend them. So if you want to redeem it this is the time to do it. If you have more than one voucher you can use them all on the same purchase. This year I am going to trial writing the date orders are to be received in the school newsletter not in the brochures. So please look out for date due in the calendar when the brochures arrive home. Ordering books: This order must be received by this Friday, 24 February. Please have order in an envelope clearly marked "bookclub" and it must not include any other payments or notices. Please make cheques out to: Scholastic NZ. If you have any queries please contact Kathryn Ph 215 7874 or john_kate@xtra.co.nz

from the classroom

KAURI (R8) Izak - I really like the swimming cause I like going in the water, even though the bus rides are a bit annoying. Greer - Today we did the Daily5. It's where you get to pick what you do. I 'worked on writing.' For that I went on our learning blogs and wrote a post about our learning goals. Mr Herring - Make sure you check on our blog every once in a while.
