When To Change?

Immediately if you see cord strands showing though the tread. Dont ride in the rain if the tire is down to the wear bars. Or if you just dont like the way the scooter is handling. Change the hub oil every other time you change the back tire.

This tutorial covers how to remove and replace the back wheel. Removing, replacing and balancing the tire is best handled by a shop. There are ways for the home mechanic to do this but the cost can be considerable. Make sure the shop is able to balance your wheels. Also many shops will mount the tire for free if you buy the tire from them.

Getting Ready - Make it Steady

Put the scooter up on its center stand. Unlock then re-lock the front suspension so its level. Set the parking break. Use a zip tie to lock the front brakes. Let the muffler cool.

Remove Muffler - Muffler Strap

Use a 13mm wrench to loosen the lock nut. Use a 6mm hex wrench and completely back out the adjusting screw. Rotate the band around the muffler until the retaining pin is clear of the holder Use the short end of the allen wrench to push the pin out of the strap.

Remove Muffler - Clamp & Bolt

This step is much easier if there is a second person to hold the muffler. Use a 13mm wrench to loosen the exhaust clamp - so it turns on the pipe. Use a T40 Torx wrench to remove the fixing bolt on the swing arm. Pull the muffler straight off the exhaust pipe so the carbon fiber grommet isnt damaged.

T40 torx for final bolt.

Disconnect Right Shock from Lower Mount

17mm wrench on the inside 13mm on the outside.

Use a 17mm wrench to hold the inside nut. Use a 13mm wrench to unscrew the bolt. Use a pry-bar or other tool to slightly lift the rear wheel and relax the load on the shock bolt, making it easier to remove. Swing the shock to the rear as far as it will go.
A leaver of some kind to lift the wheel slightly will make taking the shock bolt out easier.

Remove Wheel Clamp - Fixing Nuts and Bolts

15mm Nut

Use a 15mm wrench to remove the two nuts fixing the clamp to the engine. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the two bolts fixing the clamp to the center stand.

Hub Nut and Lug Nuts

Once the cotter pin is out, remove the cap. Use a 22mm socket and either a breaker bar or an impact wrench to remove the hub nut. Remove the spacer. Stack the cap, nut and spacer on a screwdriver to keep them in order. Remove the wheel clamp. Use a 10mm socket to remove the 5 wheel bolts.

Use a screwdriver to keep nuts and spacers in order.

Inspect Clamp Bearing - Remove Back Wheel

Inspect the wheel clamp bearing for smoothness. Remove back wheel - for MP3 400s, you may need someone to pull the shock back a little more, or remove the shock completely from the top mount. You can also remove the other spacers on the axel just keep everything in order!

Drain Rear Hub Oil

Changing the hub oil is much easier with the back wheel off - so do it every other tire change. Place a catch pan under the hub drain plug. Use a 6mm allen wrench to remove the hub oil drain plug.
Notice Waynes high-tech drain pan. An antifreeze bottle with a side cut off.

Refilling the Hub Oil

Even thought the hub dipstick is square, you can use a 12mm socket to loosen it. Use an 80/90 weight gear oil. We used Mobile-1 75/90 weight. Dont forget to take off the seal under the cap.
(We spent five minutes figuring that one out!)
Take seal off oil bottle Use vinyl tubing to fill the hub.

Hub Dipstick

Use a length of 3/8in vinyl tubing to fill the hub with 250ml of oil.
(Note that the oil bottle has gradations on the side to help measure.)

Check Hub Oil Level

Wipe off the hub dipstick, screw it in all then unscrew to remove. The manual shows the min and max marks. If theres too much oil, you can use the bottle as siphon to remove some by squeezing out some air and then letting it suck up some oil.

Reassembly - Anti-Seize Compound

Using an Anti-Seize lubricant on the threads of the nuts and bolts is recommended. It makes disassembly much easier. Because the threads are lubricated, use the higher end of any torque values.

Reattach Back Wheel - Bolts

When these line up the bolt will thread in.

Replace any spacers that need to go on before the wheel is mounted. Put a small amount of anti-seize on the top of the threads. Use the disk brake bolts as a landmark to line up the bolt holes for the rear wheel. Get all the bolts hand tight. Use a torque wrench and tighten 25 to 30Nm. Tighten every-other bolt until all have been tightened twice> (i.e. youve checked the torque)

Wheel Clamp - Wheel Fixing Nut - Cotter-pin

Reattach the clamp with the two bolts and two nuts. Replace spacer. Torque the fixing nut to 104 to 126Nm Replace cap and insert cotter pin. Use a screwdriver to separate the arms of the pin and needle-nose pliers to bend them back.

Reattach Muffler
This is easier with two people. Make sure the graphite collar are on the muffler. Have the torx bolt ready to go and slide the muffler on the exhaust pipe. Lightly tighten the torx bolt. Move the muffler strap through its mounting and reinsert the pin. Thread the tensioning bolt and start tightening. When its tightened enough, tighten the lock nut. Tighten the torx bolt. Tighten the muffler clamp, making sure the graphite collar is protruding slightly from the muffler.
