Course Description
This training will provide a brief overview of different types of immigration law concepts, rights and remedies under immigration law, functions of different government agencies that carry out immigration laws, and the inner workings of removal (or deportation) proceedings. Topics covered include the family-based petition process, status adjustments, consular processing, naturalization, inadmissibility and deportability concepts, as well as how to represent victims of human trafficking and other serious crimes. This training benefits all staff who may work with immigrants.

Presenters
Hannah E. Sullivan is currently a staff attorney at Catholic Immigration Law Project and the Godfrey and Virginia Padberg Equal Justice Fellow. She has represented low-income immigrants in both affirmative and defensive cases before USCIS, ICE, local Immigration Court, as well as the Board of Immigration Appeals. She also currently serves as the American Immigration Lawyers Association Missouri-Kansas Treasurer. She earned her J.D. degree from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2007, and a B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 2003. Kristine Walentik joined Catholic Immigration Law Project this past September as a staff attorney. She received her JD and Masters in Public Policy from the University of Denver. During law school, she interned at the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network working with detained immigrants and children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Abby Howard, LMSW works at Catholic Charities Southside Center as the St. Louis Rescue & Restore Coalition Organizer. The St. Louis Rescue & Restore Coalition is dedicated to building a community movement to respond to human trafficking through promoting public awareness, training, and outreach.

Before coming to Catholic Charities, Abby completed her Master of Social Work at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research is focused on womens issues and mental health, with a specific focus on domestic minor sex trafficking and ending the demand of commercial sexual exploitation.
