SPURS
GRAND
RE-OPENING
Spurs was started 21
years ago as a retail
giftware store located in
Brunswick Square where
it remained for 20 years,
with owner Rheta
Macaulay. Fifteen years
ago Rheta partnered with
Wendi Arsenault, who
had moved back to Saint
John after having
traveled to work in
Mexico, New York, and
Toronto. With the addition of Wendi, Spurs
expanded the home decor retail to home
decorating consultations.
Home Visits by Spurs are for
the home-owner who may
have recently purchased or
renovated a home, or
homeowners looking to bring
beauty and character to
their space. A consultation
from Spurs includes help
with furniture placement,
hanging of artwork and
accessorizing a room, or an
entire house. This can be
done using what customers
already have as well as
ordering in or supplying new
items to give the space a
polished look.

One of the many unique
services offered at Spurs
is our in-store Vase
Dressing. A customer
may purchase a vase
from the store, or bring
in a vase (from old Aunt
Mabel) and have it
"dressed" using the
appropriate floral and
dried decorations to
make it a focal point for
the room! explains
Rheta.
Event Staging is another
service provided by Rheta
and Wendy. Spurs will
stage weddings as well as
corporate and private
events! Whether your
style is modern,
whimsical, formal, or
themed, Spurs can bring
the "Wow" factor to any
event or special day.
says Wendy. We also do
holiday decorating and
staging for the home, business, or events! If it's
special to you, it's important to us.
In November 2011, Spurs left Brunswick Square for
their new, bright home at 38 Water Street (across
from the Coast Guard building)! The new location is
great, with convenient parking in front of the store,
as well as a parking lot across the street. Their
feelings on the location of their new store are very
positive! Water Street has great potential for the
City of Saint John. Spurs is the first year-round
retail outlet to open in this area and it is our hope
that others will follow! Says Rheta. Saint John
has recently shown a resurgence of new specialty
shops opening in the uptown area, helping to
enhance the city center into a great shopping
experience for everyone.
All old and new customers are welcome to "Spur
their Imaginations" by visiting Spurs Imports Inc.,

MUSINGS
By Debbie Hickey
30 YEARs AND COUNTINg
A few weeks ago I realized the Hampton Herald is turning 30 in
April. Tat led to the further realization that the Valley Viewer
will be 20 in the fall. Although both magazines were already in
place when Mike and I got involved in this venture, amazingly
12 of those years have been under our guidance. And to think
it all started as a little retirement project for Helen and Bert
Boyd.
I have started to think about the possibility of my own
retirement, as I am now closer to sixty than ffy (or even ffy-
fve!), but I keep getting stuck on what would fll my days. Te
frst twenty years of life are spent learning - how to walk, how to
talk, how to get along in the world, how to earn a living. Ten we
spend some forty years raising families and working, working
and raising families. Busy, busy, busy. Afer the intensity of those
frst sixty years, certainly a little slow-down sounds good, but not
a dead stop. Are the next thirty years perhaps an opportunity to
become more involved in community, volunteering at charities
and non-profts and service clubs, working to make the world
(whether local or in the broader sense) a better place? Or perhaps
retirement can be an opportunity to return to the learning
environment, to pursue learning for its own sake instead of
worrying whether it can get you a job/career. Universities ofen
have free tuition for those of a certain age. Maybe some part-
time work?
For sure I am getting a little ahead of myself as I anticipate at
least a couple of more years before retiring, but one of the big
considerations is what will happen to Ossekeag. Who will be the
next caretaker of what Helen and Bert Boyd frst created back
in 1982? What will the next thirty years look like? And speaking
of thirty . . . Time and Tide wait for no man, but time always
stands still for a woman of thirty. ~ Robert Frost. 801
