HIPAA Privacy Training Tutorial Week Six Assignment Amanda McNulty February 15, 2012

What I learned from doing this activity is that the business side of health care also requires managers to understand laws and regulations directly and indirectly pertaining to the health care field. Health care laws, regulations, and accreditation standards are constantly changing. As changes in health policy and regulations emerge, health care managers and administrators must be prepared to develop processes and policies to meet the mandates and requirements (Austin & Wetle, 2012). Two laws are Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 (EMTALA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) of 1996. EMTALA (1986) helps to ensure patients receive comparable care through medical screening and stabilization during medical emergency, regardless of the ability to pay for the care and services (DHHS: EMTALA, 2010). HIPPA (1996) was enacted to ensure medical records, medical billing, and account services adhere to strict privacy guidelines (DHHS, HIPPA, 2010). While there are sever provisions, as well as other state and federal regulations, this course introduces you

to particular laws because they can affect health care workers, managers, and organizations. References: Austin, A., & Wetle, V. (2012). The U.S. health care system: Combining business, health, and delivery. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson. Prentice-Hall 2011
