Hava Alberstein has been one of the best-known Israeli singers for the past 20 years, and was forrnlerly noted for her performances of Yiddish and Israeli patriotic songs. In recent years, she has made a number of political gestures, expressing strong support for reservistswho refusedto servein the Lebanon War. Her protest particularly upset the nationalist right, and several demands were voicedto deny her national honours. Chad Gadya is based on a traditional Passoversong,known to most Jews from their childhood. Hava Alberstein's version, sung to a haunting Oriental tune, has also been banned from Israel Radio.
