GREETING/WELCOME PRELUDE LIGHTING OF CANDLES LENTEN CANDLE/CALL TO WORSHIP

Rich Ashley John Hamrick

Lenten Candle Liturgy 2nd Sunday in Lent

As we come together in this season of Lent, we will slowly extinguish lights on the Altar to remind of the darkness that has crept into our lives because of sin and of the darkness that came from the death of Jesus Christ. During this season, do not dread this darkness, but meditate on your own lives and look for the light that is to come: the light of Jesus Christ. Worship Leader: On Sunday morning, for a brief space of time, we leave behind the world of home and work and schoolthe world where we have our lists of things to do, activities to participate in, tasks to complete. We come here this morning seeking something else. We come here seeking a shiftfrom the ordinary to the sacred, from doing to being. I invite you to close your eyes.

Worship Leader: Let go of your list. Recall that it is the season of Lent. Remember the parable of the sower. The sower throws the seed . . . and where it lands determines if it will grow or not grow. Think of it this way: think of the season of Lent as the sower, the time when seeds of faith are thrown with special intensity, as a time when God calls to us in a low, urgent voice. Listen. Jesus is being drawn to Jerusalem. Where is God calling you to? What is God calling you to do? Time of Silence

Worship Leader: As we extinguish this light, we acknowledge the darkness and pain which is felt around this world.

All: Loving God, as we journey through this holy season of Lent, may we be open to your presence. Give us the strength to make the changes that are needed in our lives and the courage to take on the work of transforming the world. Amen.

The Stations of The Cross (St. Francis of Assisi)

PREPARATORY PRAYER Rich Ashley O most merciful Jesus, with a contrite heart and penitent spirit, I bow down in profound humility before Thy divine majesty. I adore Thee as my supreme Lord and Master; I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee above all things. I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, my Supreme and Only God. I resolve to amend my life, and although I am unworthy to obtain mercy, yet the sight of Thy holy cross, on which Thou didst die, inspires me with hope and consolation.

I will, therefore, meditate on Thy sufferings, and visit the stations of Thy Passion in company with Thy sorrowful Mother and my guardian angel, with the intention of promoting Thy honor and saving my soul. I desire to gain all the indulgences granted for this holy exercise for myself and for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. O merciful Redeemer, who has said, "And I, if I be lifted from earth, will draw all things to Myself," draw my heart and my love to Thee, that I may perform this devotion as perfectly as possible, and that I may live and die in union with Thee. Amen.

MORNING PRAYER Worship Leader & Congregation Worship Leader: O innocent Jesus, having sinned, I am guilty of eternal death, but Thou willingly dost accept the unjust sentence of death, that I might live. People: For whom, then shall I live, if not for Thee, my Lord? Let me displease men and all the world and never displease you, Lord Jesus. All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily Bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. O Lord, Hear My Prayer (Three Times)

SCRIPTURE

O How He Loves You and Me The Celebration Hymnal# 349

As the Father has loved Me, so have I love you (John 15:9).

Worship Leader: As we are in the season of Lent, we stop our journey at the tomb awaiting the return of our Lord and Savior. As we stand this morning in pain, remembering the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, we also stand in joy and in faith as we know that Christs sacrifice was not in vain. Through him death has been defeated, sin will be no more, and the chains which sin placed around each of us has been destroyed! Stand today remembering these words of grace and peace:

All: This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4).
