Community Gears Up for The Hunger Games

In fall 2012, Rowan Public Library will join three other libraries in a community read of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. But you wont want to wait until then to start reading. The Hunger Games is set to be released as a movie March 23. Parts of the movie were filmed locally and you may even know someone who was an extra! The Hunger Games trilogy has swept the nation as a young adult bestseller, as well as captured the interest of many adults. They are like potato chips, you cant read just one, so have the second title checked out ready to go! Set in Panem, in the ruins of a place once known as North America, a capitol is surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol enforces its brutal rule by forcing residents of the other districts to participate in the Hunger Games, a fight-to-the death competition broadcast on live TV. One boy and one girl are chosen annually by lottery to play. The winner is showered with riches and food for his or her district, while the Capitol gains one more year of rule and power. This year, however, Katniss and Peeta from district 12 will challenge all the rules of the Hunger Games.

Childrens Book Awards Announced

The Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, has announced this years Newbery and Caldecott Medal winners for titles published in the previous year. Writer Jack Gantos won this years Newbery Medal for Dead End in Norvelt. In 2001, Gantos received the Newbery Honor Award for his book Joey Pigza Loses Control. This years Caldecott Medal has been awarded to Chris Raschka, illustrator and writer of A Ball for Daisy. Raschka also won the Caldecott Medal in 2006 for The Hello, Goodbye Window. The Newbery Award was established in 1922 and became the first childrens book award in the world. This prestigious award is named in honor of 18th-century English bookseller John Newbery. The intent of the award is to encourage original creative work in the field of books for children and is awarded to the author for most outstanding contribution to childrens literature. It became apparent to many people after the Newbery Award was established that the artists designing picture books for children were equally deserving of recognition and encouragement. As a result, the Caldecott Medal was established in 1938 and was named in honor of the 19th-century English illustrator Randolph J. Caldecott. This medal is to be given to the artist who had created the most distinguished picture book of the year. The Newbery Honor Books this year are Inside Out & Back Again, written by Thanhha Lai and Breaking Stalins Nose, written and illustrated by Eugene Yelchin. For the younger audience be sure to check out the Caldecott Honor Books awarded this year: Blackout, illustrated and written by John Rocco, Grandpa Green, illustrated and written by Lane Smith, and MeJane illustrated and written by Patrick McDonnell.
Rowan Public Library appreciates your gifts and will purchase materials for the library that can be enjoyed by our community for years to come.
