SUBSTITUTION METHOD OF SOLVING LINEAR SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS

Prerequisite Knowledge: Students will be able to solve linear equations in one variable. Given a solution to a system students will be able to verify if it is true. Graphing a system to verify an ordered pair is a solution. Objectives: In a 90 minute class, 1) Students will be able to solve a system of linear equations by Substitution when one variable is already given in terms of the other variable in one of the equations. 2) Students will be able to solve a system of linear equations by Substitution when one equation must first be solved for one variable in terms of the other. 3) Students will be able to solve a word problem by translating the statements into a system of linear equations and then apply the Substitution method. List of Materials: *LCD Projector *PowerPoint *Graphing Calculators *Work Sheet*Article Drill/Do Now: 1) Two problems: 3x+2y=8, x=4, find y; -4x+5y=7, y=-2, find x 2) Is (3,1) a solution to the system: 4x-y=11 and -3x + 10y = -1 ? Introduction: A system of equations is a collection of two or more equations with a same set of unknowns. In solving a system of equations, we try to find values for each of the unknowns that will satisfy every equation in the system. Systems of linear equations will have one solution (independent), infinite solutions (dependent), or no solution (inconsistent). Today, we will learn to solve such a system using the Substitution Method. To introduce this algebraic approach we will watch a PowerPoint presentation. ( Show students PowerPoint) At the end of the power point ask the question What would your response have been if the result in the last example had been FALSE ?. Answer: There is no solution and a graph would have shown two parallel lines! Guided Practice: (Worksheet or Overhead)
Example #1. y= 4x 3x+y=-21 Do this example with students following the prompts following the Five Steps.

Steps:

1. Solve for one variable in one equation. 2. Substitute for that variable in the other equation. 3. Solve. 4. Replace to find the other variable. 5. Check your solution.

Now work these in small groups: USE SUBSTITUTION.

1.

x + y = 10 5x y = 2

2.

y = 2x - 2 2x + 3y = 10

3.

2a 3b = 7 2a b = 5

Have groups display solutions on board/tag paper.

Try these individually: USE SUBSTITUTION.

4.

x=y-6 2x + 3y = 33

5.

t = 2s - 3 s+t=9

6.

2x + y = 10 x 3y = -2

Have individuals share solutions on board/tag paper.

Extension to Word Problems: For each word problem, write a system of linear equations to model the given data. Then solve the system showing all your work/steps involving the Substitution Method. Finally, answer the question in a complete sentence. From the DHS the following data is available for Immigration in 2010. See this site: http://www.dhs.gov/files/statistics/publications/YrBk10En.shtm

1) The total number of Canadian and Mexican Aliens returned in 2010 were about 384,500. If the total number of Mexicans is about 12 times the number of Canadians then how many of each nationality were returned to their home country that year?

CONSIDER THIS ARTICLE: (handout/overhead) (*brief excerpts from article about immigration policies -- *Obama2) Possible questions related to the article 1) Why would DHS be concerned with returning Aliens illegally entered in the US? 2) Give at least one additional reason why this policy should be continued; or at least one reason for not following it. NOW CONTINUE AND SOLVE THESE ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS: 2) During 2010, a total of 77200 Asians and Europeans were returned to their countries by US Immigration. Given that the number of Asians exceeded the number of Europeans by 38,600, then how many Aliens were returned to each continent in 2010? 3) Immigration returned 21,150 aliens to China and India in 2010. The number of Chinese exceeded the twice the number of Indians by 7050. How many people were returned to each country by DHS last year?

Homework: 1) 6-10 problems from student text; or worksheet . 2) Go to website from which word problems were formed and use Table 37 to make up a pair of word problems for classmates to solve .
