Suffering leads to redemption

Back to basics
by the Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis Are you looking for a Lenten Discipline? Here are some options from our Book of Common Prayer: Option 1: Have a Ten-Commandments-Lent Take the first four commandments (Duties to God) as your underlying practice for the whole season and during each of the six weeks of Lent focus on one of the six commandments concerning our relationships with people (Commandments 5-10). The 10 Commandments can be found in our Book of Common Prayer on page 350. An excellent explanation is offered in our Catechism on p. 847. Continued on page 5

The gospel of Mark offers stark themes for this particular Lenten season. The development of this gospel shows a messiah who lives with frustration and pain. Instead of a messiah who brings political stability, as they had expected, the focus is on his suffering. Marks depiction of Christ parallels the suffering of the early church believers under

Neros persecution. Mark consistently points out that the ruling powers, and none of the disciples, understand who Jesus is until the latter part of the gospel. Then Mark reveals a distinction between those who understand who this servant of God is, for the sake of the world as Gods good and

Be sure to pick up a copy of Mary Drastal created the original mosaic design and was the driving force behind the logos creation. Mary has just finished serving as a member of our vestry. She is an artist (and art teacher), but wanted to find a graphic artist to handle this project. Holly Heyde, Erv and Mary K Heydes daughter, began working on the project last year. She designed several drafts for us. St. Martins member Robin Ragsdale joined the artistic team and put the finishing touches on the project early this year. redeemable creation, and those who would not recognize Jesus at all. Remember that when the curtain, or veil, between heaven and earth was torn that even the Roman soldier saw clearly and believed that Jesus was the Son of God. Mark led the early believers to recognize that their suffering did not go unnoticed by God. What seemed like a series of failures to overcome the demoralizing circumstances of their worlds power structure turned into the greatest gift possible to the Church: that nothing could separate them from Gods presence. As the community claimed that gift they were empowered to see their lamentations with perspective. Christs death brought Gods power to redeem and human suffering together. If you ever have the chance to visit St. John The Divine Cathedral in New York City, seek out the small chapels on the other side of the main altar. Once you go behind the huge altar area, or sanctuary, you can see chapels solely dedicated to peoples lamentations. These spaces serve as a reminder to modern Christians that God cares about present day sufferings, too. Perhaps it is during the hardest times, on the other side of lifes sanctuary, that our faith offers us the strength to be with this loving God who intimately also knew human suffering. Then we can claim, even a glimpse, of a way forward with Christ as our guide.

Week of Guided Prayer offers spiritual retreat

by Clarence Heller What if what you did for Lent this year is to let Jesus love you? What could be better, letting love, acceptance and healing deepen in you that it may then spread throughout the world? Participating in The Week of Guided Prayer could be a wonderful way to do the will of God. A Week of Guided Prayer is an individually-directed retreat made during the course of everyday life. Throughout the week each participant spends thirty minutes a day in private prayer and meets privately with his/her prayer guide for thirty minutes each day. The confidential, one-on-one meetings with prayer guides take place in the afternoons or evenings, at the convenience of each participant. Prayer guides are not members of our parish, nor may companion anyone they know. There is no registration fee, but a $44 suggested donation to help with the cost of the retreat is appreciated. The format of this retreat offers opportunities to:
Explore different ways of praying. Speak privately with an experienced prayer guide. Become more aware of Gods presence in your life. Go on retreat while staying at home. Participate in an ecumenical retreat invite your friends from other parishes and/or denominations.

Week of Guided Prayer

Begins Sunday, March 4 Group Gathering at 1 p.m. Pray on your own 30 minutes each day Meet with prayer guide 30 minutes each day at St. Martins Celebration Gathering Saturday, March 10 At 3:30 p.m., followed by the 5:05 Worship Service Register by Feb. 24 Registration forms available online at www.stmartinschurch.org or at the church or contact Loretta Go at lgo1957@aol.com

Since each participant is unique (as well as each prayer guide), exactly what happens during the retreat is different for each person. The prayer guide listens and responds with a welcoming, non-judgmental, compassionate presence not only to the participant, but also to Gods Spirit moving in their midst.

Lenten Faith Groups: sharing hospitality

I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. - Matthew 25:31-46
LENTEN FAITH GROUPS

by Bev Weaver Our Lenten program will provide an opportunity to deepen our faith, grow in knowledge of God working in our lives, and broaden our view of how as Christians we can effectively welcome each other. As a way of life, an act of love, an expression of faith, our Christian hospitality reflects and anticipates Gods welcome. We will introduce the concept of Faith Groups that cultivates this grate-

ful spirit of accepting other people into our lives. As a group we read from a chosen book, Scripture passage, or talk about Christian values or concepts. Being part of a Faith Group leads us to a sense of Gods presence in those who differ most from us in opinion, background or life experience. We hope youll be a part of our Lenten experience each Wednesday evening in March.

Wednesday evenings Feb. 29, March 4, 11, 18, 25 Soup, Salad & Bread potluck dinner begins at 6 p.m. Guided group discussions begin at 7 p.m.

Promoting self-examination, repentence and amendment of life at the 5:05 Saturday worship
by the Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis, Assistant Priest A good Lent can be both scorchingly painful as we discover darker truths about ourselves but also joyful and invigorating as we follow Gods call into freedom, peace, and abundant life. To mark the season of Lent in Alternative Worship at 5:05 on Saturday evenings, we will recall each week one of the Baptismal Vows (Book of Common Prayer, 304) and use the words of Brian McLaren's Let's Confess It to help us do two things: First, become more conscious of distortions (sin) in our relationships with God, other people, and creation. Second, become more attuned to Gods Spirit working in our lives to set us free (redeem us) from the power of evil, sin, and death. St. Martins member Chuck Laney will accompany the 5:05 Yours, looking forward in Christ, emily+ service on piano March 3, 17 and 31, augmenting our worship by riffing off themes in the liturgy. Im looking forward to this creative and spontaneous collaboration as we experience how music can underscore in our whole being meaning, mood, emotion. This is not about singing. Its about listening and feeling and growing.

Back to basics, continued from page 1

Option 2: Have a Back-to-Baptism-Lent Choose one of the following: The Renunciations of Evil and Commitment to Jesus Christ The first three weeks, focus on one of the questions aimed at recognizing and resisting three kinds of evil: cosShannon Gould rehearses her with fellow handbell choir members Theresa Luebcke and Mopsi Hanley. 11-year old Shannon is a new member of Tintinnabulation. The handbell choir rehearses on Monday evenings during Lent. If you are interested in becoming a ringer, please contact Music Director Earl Naylor at enaylor@stmartinschurch.org.

OR The Baptismal Vows (BCP, p. 304) Focus each week on one of the five promises we make at Baptism and reclaim at Confirmation. During Holy Week, I will ask you to consider what you would say to Jesus knowing that he is to die. How has your relationship with Him made a difference in your life? Offer that up on Good Friday.

mic, systemic, and personal. The last three weeks, you could focus on what it means to accept Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace and love, and follow and obey him as Lord. (3 of each.)

Hemingway Winter features Gertrude Stein

by Ruby Downs St. Martin's Tuesday Night Book Club's "Hemingway Winter" continues on Tuesday, March 27, when we discuss The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein. The group meets from 7 till 8:30 p.m. in Packwood Library to discuss this book by Ernest Hemingway's friend, Gertrude Stein. Newcomers are always welcome so come join the discussion.
The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein (Amazon.com Review) "Largely to amuse herself, [Gertrude Stein] wrote The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas in 1932... using as a sounding board her companMESSAGES

ion Miss Toklas, who had been with her for twenty-five years. It has been said that the writing takes on very much Miss Toklas' conversational style, and while this is true the style is still a variant of Miss Stein's conversation style. ...She usually insisted that writing is an entirely different thing from talking, and it is part of the miracle of this little scheme of objectification that she could by way of imitating Miss Toklas put in writing something of her own beautiful conversation. So that, aside from making a real present of her past, she created a figure of herself, established an identity a twin, a Doppelganger.... The book is full of the most lucid and shapely anecdotes, told in a purer and more closely fitting prose... than even Gide or Hemingway have ever commanded .... " -- Donald Sutherland

Sticky faith
by Heidi Gioia, Director of Youth Ministries Last month, I attended a youth ministry conference and heard Kara Powell talk about sticky faith. She discussed a study that found 40 - 50% of teens who had been active in their youth group lost their faith during the college years. Despite engaging programming, missional experiences and strong relationships in high school, these college students felt alone in their new environment. They had left their faith at home. Powell offered advice on how to create a sticky faith, one that supports and strengthens teens as they gain significant independence in college. Id like to highlight one of the suggestions.: Create a 5:1 ratio that is, 5 adults connected to 1 teen On the surface, this may seem unrealistic and unwanted I cant imagine any teen willingly hanging out with 5 adults on a regular basis. There will always be a place for teen-centered programming. But rather than being relegated to the basement, teens need to be drawn into relationship with the larger church. If their only experience with church is youth group, then they dont see a place for themselves as a young adult. Each of us can accomplish this ratio by getting to know a few teens and sharing mutual interests. We can ask them whats going on in their life and then pray for those things. Another important way is by hosting intergenerational events like the Lenten program. We can also invite them to join our (adult) ministry groups. When teens are given practice at what it means to be the church, they are more comfortable seeking a new church home in early adulthood. St. Martins is in a great place to help create sticky faith. Were cultivating a vibrant community of connected people. Our college outreach ministry also embodies this. Lets continue to involve our teens in the full life of the church so they have a lively and loving relationship with Christ and our church community for the long run.

Passionate leadership guides Bible studies

Christian stewardship is the grateful and responsible use of God's gifts in the light of God's purpose as revealed in Jesus Christ. Christian stewards, empowered by the Holy Spirit, commit themselves to conscious, purposeful decisions. by Janis Greenbaum If you stop by St. Martin's on most any day, you're likely to find a lively Bible study group meeting somewhere in our church. These groups are all led by members who go above and beyond the role of "leader." They all have a deepseated spirituality and a passion to share their with Bible Study. My faith has grown as I have begun to understand these ancient writings. The Rev. Virginia Noel Women's Bible Study Virginia may be retired as a priest, but she hasnt stopped serving the church. She continues sharing her skills through Bible studies and prayer groups at St. Martin's. Her Tuesday morning classes cater to women and often feature women in the Bible. Virginia guides the women in the group to discover how God is working in their lives every day.

faith with others. Each of these leaders shows how stewardship is part of our everyday lives. Bev Weaver: Lenten Faith Groups Bev is responsible for instigating, researching and planning this year's Wednesday evening Lenten program. After serving as a Stephen Minister for several years, Bev was looking for a new way to give back to the church and to find a way to honor Fr. Jon and his vision for our parish. She says this Faith Group program, which is based on the concept of Christian Hospitality, is divinely inspired. Its the right program at the right time for our church, Bev said. Its my turn to show my spiritual connections to St. Martins. Mary Richardson: Monday Bible Study and Thursday Beginners' Bible Study Mary has a contagious enthusiasm for Bible Study. I began reading the Bible myself because I was tired of others telling me what it said, Mary said. As I became more immersed in my efforts, I wanted to share my enthusiasm with others. Mary has been leading the (co-ed) Monday morning group for three years. She describes the class as a scholarly look at the Bible. Marys enthusiasm for the Old Testament led her to begin a second class on Thursdays for those who have little knowledge or experience

Carolyn Stern and Daryl Norman are members of the Womens Bible Study.

John Lange: Men's Bible Study John is on a life-long faith-seeking journey and is motivated to invite others to join his quest. He leads a group of working and retired men in Bible study every Thursday at 6:30 a.m. The story is not as simple as we sometimes make it out to be, John said. He encourages his group to not be afraid to ask questions, and then pray for and wrestle with the answers. By studying the Bible, John hopes to equip his group for ministry beyond the walls of the church. Its not just a desire to take it all in, but also a desire to let it all out.

Sharing a vision for 2012

The Rev. Jon Hall and church leaders shared their visions for the new year with members of the parish at our Jan. 29 Annual Meeting. Fr. Jon addressed the congregation and encouraged all members to accept an invitation towards spiritual growth, by discerning how God is calling you to be a servant leader. Treasurer Larry Cornelius presented our financial reports, which include a balanced budget for 2012. Outgoing Senior Warden Jane Klieve marked the end of our congregations transition period and the first full year of our life with Father Jon as our rector. She expressed her gratitude to her fellow vestry members, the staff, all ministry leaders and Fr. Jon for all the hard work that has taken place to have our church in such a positive position going in to 2012. All ministry and financial reports as well as notes from Fr. Jons address are available at our website at stmartinschurch.org.
