Action Physiologic Action: Acts by directly counteracting all the major metabolic disorders occurring within the ischemic cell. Pharmacologic Action: Anti-angina
Nursing Considerations Check for doctors order. Monitor Blood pressure and pulse rate before and after giving the medication. Notify prescribing signs of heart failure such as swelling of hands and feet or SOB
Action Physiologic Action: Calcium Carbonate can neutralize gastric acid rapidly and effectively, Pharmacologic Action: Antacid
Nursing Considerations Give the medication 1 to 1 after meals. Dont give patients foods containing oxalic acid, phytic acid, and phosphorus because inter action may interfere with calcium absorption. Observe for signs and symptoms of hyperkalemia
Action Physiologic Action: Inhibits platelet aggregation by blocking ADP receptors on platelets, preventing clumping of platelets. Pharmacologic Action: Anticoagulants; Antiplatelets & Fibrinolytics (Thrombolytics)
Indication Treatment of patients at risk for ischemic eventshistory if MI., ischemic stroke, peripheral artery disease. Treatment of patients with acute coronary syndrome.
Nursing Considerations Assess for symptoms of stroke, MI during treatment. Monitor liver function studies: AST, ALT, bilirubin, creatinine if patient is on longtreatment Monitor blood studies: CBC, Hgb, Hct, cholesterol if the patient is on longtherapy; thrombocytopenia ad neutropenia may occur.
Action Physiologic Action: It is an antithrombotic drug that selectively binds to antithrombin III (AT III); thus potentiating the neutralization of Factor Xa. Nutralization of Factor Xa disrupts the blood coagulation cascade, which inhibits thrombin formation and thrombus development Pharmacologic Action: Anti-thrombotic
Indication Deep venous thrombosis, acute, in conjunction with warfarin sodium; Acute ST segment elevation MI
Nursing Considerations Check for an adverse effect of rash on the injection site; fever and anemia (bleeding)
Medication
Action
Nursing Considerations Monitor Vital signs. HR is a sensitive indicator of patients response to atropine. Be alert to changes in quality, rate, and rhythm of HR and respiration and to changes in BP and temperature. Monitor I & O,
Atropine So4 Physiologic Action: Antagonizes the muscarine- like activity of acetylcholine and other choline esters. Pharmacologic Action: Anti- cholinergic
especially in older adults and patients who have had surgery (drug may contribute to urinary retention). Palpate lower abdomen for distention. Have patient void before giving atropine.
Medication Terbutaline 5 mg q4
Action Physiologic Action: In low doses, acts relatively at betaadrenergic receptors to cause bronchodilation. At higher doses, beta selectively is lost and the drug acts at beta receptors to cause typical sympathomimetic cardiac effects Pharmacologic Action: Anti asthmatic, broncho dilator
Nursing Considerations Use minimal doses for minimal periods of time, drug tolerance can occur with prolonged use. Keep a betablocker, such as atenolol readily available in case cardiac dysrrythmias occur.
