(Solve All Problems. . . . .and. . . . .Good Luck)

Problem 1: (10 points) A 50 cm diameter pipeline carries hot oil at 30 C and it is exposed to a surrounding temperature of -20 C. A special insulation 5 cm thick coats the pipe and has a thermal conductivity of 0.27 W/m-K. The convection heat transfer coefficient of the outside pipe (surroundings) is 12 W/m2-K. Estimate the energy loss from the pipeline per meter length.

Problem 2: (10 points) A 3 X 3 array of power transistors is attached to an aluminum heat sink (k = 180 W/m-K) of width W = 150 mm on a side. The thermal contact resistance between each transistor and heat sink is Rt,c = 0.045 K/W. The heat sink has a base thickness of Lb = 6 mm and an array of Nf = 25 rectangular fins, each of thickness t = 3 mm. Cooling is provided by air flow through channels formed by the fins and cover plate, as well as by the air flow along the two sides of the heat sink (the outer surfaces of the outermost fins). Consider conditions for which the fin length is Lf = 30 mm, the temperature of the air is T = 27 C, and the convection coefficient is h = 100 W/m2-K. If the maximum allowable transistor temperature is Tt = 100 C, what is the maximum allowable power dissipation, qt, per transistor? An adiabatic fin tip condition may be assumed.

Problem 3: (10 points) As part of the heat treatment process, cylindrical, 304 stainless steel rods of 100 mm diameter are cooled from an initial temperature of 500 C by suspending them in oil bath at 30 C. If a convection coefficient of 500 W/m2-K is maintained by circulation of the oil, how long does it take for the centerline of a rod to reach a temperature of 50 C, at which point it is withdrawn from the bath? If 10 rods of length L = 1 m are processed per hour, what is the nominal rate at which energy must be extracted from the bath (cooling load)?

Problem 4: (10 points) Air at 300 K and 400 kPa blows across a 10 cm square plate at a velocity of 35 m/s. The plate is maintained at a constant temperature of 400 K. Calculate the heat lost from the plate.

Problem 5: (10 points) A steam condenser for a large power plant has steam condensing at 38 C on the shell side of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Water serves as the coolant on the tube side, entering at 20 C and leaving at 27 C. The exchanger involves one shell pass and two tube passes. Assume that the overall heat transfer coefficient is 2500 W/m2-K. The exchanger heat transfer rate of 700 MW (a) Estimate the exchanger area. (b) The water flow rate for the exchanger in (a) is changed to allow an exit temperature for the cooling water to become 34 C. What percent reduction of steam condensation rate will occur.
