March AL 6012

March AD 2012
From the East: From the East As we look forward to March, Brothers, let us focus on the message from the Grand Master. Opportunity and Enthusiasm We have tremendous opportunities ahead of us as a Lodge. Our membership is growing, we have Degrees monthly, and our membership is growing. And we have just as many opportunities within the Lodge. We have Brothers who havent been to meetings in months. Reach out to a Brother this month and let them know the Lodge still cares about them. We have tremendous food and Fellowship before our meetings. Share that information with a Brother who missed it. Approach everything you do as a Mason with enthusiasm and your efforts will reflect it. March will be a full month and I still need some Brothers to step up and be catechism Instructors. Our newer members deserve our best. Thank you again for the opportunity to serve you as Worshipful Master.

Secretarys Corner Brothers, Speaking of Lodge funds, we received our 2012 bill for insurance on the Lodge building, liability and paraphernalia and the premium increased over 60% this year. Most of it is due to windstorm damage coverage. If anyone knows of a better way to get less expensive insurance coverage for our lodge please let me know. Im still open for information to add to the Trestleboard each month. Im going to have each line officer add their comments in future editions. Anyone else with pertinent information is very welcome to participate. And, as usual, check your dues cards. I still have several in my office that say 2012 on them and have not been claimed.

Who Are the Sideliners?

By Donald E. Todd, of Hamilton Lodge, No 664, reprinted from Iowas Grand Lodge Bulletin

On the sidelines is defined by Websters New World Dictionary as (1) in the area along the sidelines; (2) outside the main sphere of action; (3) not actively participating. The noun, sideliner describes the person who is on the sideline. The sideliner helps comprise the largest single group at most any function or activity. The Sideliner in a Masonic Lodge is that person who holds no office, is not taking part in the ritual or has no committee responsibility. As such, it would appear that the Sideliner serves no useful purpose in the Lodge. Nothing can be further from the truth. To be a Sideliner, one must first of all attend Lodge. Then, if he is loyal, cooperative, enthusiastic, cordial, sympathetic and courageous, he is befitting his Lodge and the Fraternity. It is the Sideliner who keeps the Lodge viable. It is the Sideliner who makes the Lodge work. It is the Sideliner who is the Lodge. You, too, can be a Sideliner.

Palliate - - Aggravate
You are not to palliate nor aggravate the offenses of your brethren, but in the decision of every trespass against our rules . . . . At first glance, the meaning of the word palliate is a no brainer, i.e. dont beat up on your brethren. Most Masons know what these words mean (or think they do), but then when the dictionary (American Heritage Dictionary) is consulted, there is a twist. 1. To make (an offense or crime) seem less serious extenuate. 2. To make less severe or intense; mitigate. Then there are the synonyms: extenuate, gloss over, white wash. When one thinks about it, the words seem to say: treat the acts of your brethren equally dont whitewash his deeds, but dont persecute him either.
