SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Tabernacle Sun
The ROTC color
guard, students and
teachers march
through the hallways
of Lenape High
School recently to
celebrate Black
History Month.
By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Tabernacle Sun
hey marched around
the high school as
Martin Luther King
Jr.s I Have a
Dream played over
the PA system.
About 200 of them
students, teachers,
and staff from Shawnee,
Lenape, Seneca and Cherokee
high schools converged on
Lenape High School for the
event, a celebration of the life
and legacy of King.
Former Lenape student and
member of the African-Ameri-
can club Troy Riley started the
march a few years ago to recog-
nize the civil rights leader and
to celebrate Black History
Month.
King delivered his speech dur-
ing the march on Washington in
August 1963.
Junior Shayla Farmer, presi-
dent of the Lenape High School
African-American club, thinks
the march is good because it
brings people together. The 16-
year-old said the symbolic march
is an opportunity for students in
other district high schools to get
together.
I hope that everyone takes
away what Martin Luther King
did for us and how weve come to-
gether as a country and as a peo-
ple, Farmer said. Recognizing
him as a person is really good.
Brenda Martin-Lee, business
educator and Seneca multicul-
tural club adviser, said the
turnout was impressive and
commented on the speech.
I think that speech says a lot
about where they were at that
time and where we are now and
it gives the students and staff an
opportunity to stop and think
about what the speech was about
in terms of civil rights, not just
for African-Americans, but for
all people, Martin-Lee said. I
think its great.
Pier Carey, a math teacher at
Seneca, is also co-adviser of the
multicultural club there.
Its a really great way to get
kids from all of our schools to-
gether to reenact what happened
and reflect on what the speech

The Tabernacle School District
lowered its flags to half-staff on
Tuesday, Feb. 21, in honor and
memory of Walter Keiss educa-
tional contribution to children
and families of the school dis-
trict.
Keiss, who served Tabernacle
as superintendent from 1994 to
2000, died on Feb. 15.
He was 65.
Keiss was a student-centered
educator who took an active role
in improving the districts tech-
nology and ensuring the technol-
ogy was state-of-the-art for all stu-
dents, district staff said.
He wholeheartedly searched
for any and all resources that he
could bring into the schools. His
interactions with all members of
the faculty and staff were collabo-
rative.
He had a way of making people
around him feel comfortable.
Keiss managed to balance his
support among members of the
community, the school board, the
administration, staff and, most of
all, the students.
The Tabernacle School District
and the community at large is a
better place because of Keiss
contributions and dedication,
many are saying.
Mr. Keiss served as a role
model for all educators through
his commitment to a quality edu-
cation for all children, current
Tabernacle Superintendent of
Schools George Rafferty said.

ber Stephen Price remembers
meeting Keiss for the first time in
1994 when Keiss applied to be-
come the superintendent of
schools.
We were immediately im-
pressed by his outgoing personal-
ity and depth of experience,
Price said.
He noted Keiss quickly estab-
lished himself as a school leader.
He was the kind of adminis-
trator who frequently stood in
our hallways greeting staff and
students by name and making all
in his presence feel welcome,
Price said. No matter how busy
his days, he always made time to
talk to anyone in need of help.
Price said Keiss had his hand
in many groups that benefit
young people, including volun-
teer work with Boy Scouts,
YMCA, Catholic Charities, the
Knights of Columbus, the Mount
Laurel Athletic Association and
many other community and edu-
cational organizations.
After leaving Tabernacle, Keiss
became the Burlington County
superintendent of Schools.
Walt will really be missed by
many in our town, Price said.
Another Tabernacle Board of
Education member, John Bulina,
said he knew Keiss for 20 years.
Walts legacy in Tabernacle is
the same as his legacy through-
out his career, Bulina said. He
told it like it was, and he was a
great advocate for kids.
Bulina said Keiss was well
liked because he had a genuine
concern for people.
One trait of great leaders is
their ability to connect with peo-
ple on a personal level, Bulina
said. Walt had that ability. Dur-
ing my nearly 40 years in educa-
tion, Walt was one of the finest
superintendents that I have had
the privilege to work with. The
leadership that Walt exhibited
throughout his life is evidenced
by the accolades that were accord-
ed to Walt including: Burlington
County School Board Member of
the Year in 2010; the Burlington
County Volunteer of the Year in
2006; a joint legislative resolution
from the New Jersey Legislature
for Educational Services to
Burlington County; and being
awarded honorary commander
status of McGuire Air Force
Base.
To Bulina, Keiss was a friend, a
colleague, and a mentor.
One thing that I, and others,
learned from Walt was the need to
sit down and discuss possible so-
lutions to a problem, Bulina
said. Then evaluate the possible
solutions to arrive at the best so-
lution.

meant and still means, she said.
I think that weve come a long
way and I think that weve
achieved a lot through education,
being able to integrate our col-
leges and universities.
Carey said the election of
Barack Obama to the presidency
was another milestone.
However, she believes we have
a long way to go.
Seneca senior Jillisa Roberts is
president of her schools multi-
cultural club.
I think its a great opportunity
for students to actually hear the
speech because we dont get that
opportunity often in high school.
But I think its a good time for us
to hear it and to take advantage of
the opportunities that were given
because of the speech, the 17-
year-old said. I feel like weve
broken down a lot of stereotypi-
cal boundaries and weve broken
down a lot of boundaries that we
werent able to do in the past
and weve made a lot of
progress.
Crystal Josiah, 17, is a leader in
the African-American club at
Lenape.
I feel we all get along much
better, the senior said. We can
all be part of something without
having to worry about our skin
color.
Shawnee High School Princi-
pal Matt Campbell thinks the
march helps people celebrate dif-
ferences and reminds students to
judge people by the content of
their character rather than the
color of their skin, as King did.
Its nice to honor Dr. King for
all that he has done and I think
its a good message for these kids
to hear what he had to say and
what it means today, Campbell
said. I think theres been a lot of
progress, but I think theres still a
long way to go.
Shawnee sophomore Lauren
Coker, who is in her first year as a
member of the multicultural
club, said a good friend recruited
her. Coker said she wanted to see
schools with much more diversity
than Shawnee.
Theres been such a great im-
provement from his time to now,
the 16-year-old said. Theres al-
ways going to be racism, but peo-
ple have learned to overcome it.
Lenape English teacher and
African-American Club adviser
Luis German said King is inspi-
rational because he brought
change.
March for Martin is a good ex-
perience for the students to find
out what exactly the I Have a
Dream speech is about, German
said.
Jenise Hillian, a special educa-
tion teacher at Cherokee and ad-
viser for the African-American
club there, said the club is open to
all people.
Its just a fun time for every-
body and its a nice thing for
those who are of African-Ameri-
can descent to get together and to
share and to appreciate our cul-
ture, Hillian said. This genera-
tion doesnt realize what the
struggle has been for African-
Americans and other people of
color. They were born being able
to do anything, go anywhere.
She said African-Americans
owe King a lot for advancing the
Civil Rights of all citizens.
I cant imagine not being able
to go to the same places I go to
now, so Im very grateful for
him, Hillian said. I hope that
the young people learn that it
wasnt always like this.

in our opinion
T
heres not a lot that Gov.
Christie does that doesnt pro-
voke a heated response from
someone, somewhere. Budget cuts, ed-
ucation reform, you name it, shortly
after the governor stops talking, some-
one tears into his proposal. And thats
not a bad thing. We mention it to point
out that the governor has a habit of
diving head-first into controversy
over and over again.
However, the governor is now back-
ing a constitutional amendment to re-
form the bail system in the state. Its a
move that he calls common sense.
We agree.
The measure would allow judges to
consider such things as the defen-
dants past dangerous behavior before
sending that person back out onto the
streets, often to cause more problems,
intimidate witnesses, etc.
This is a proposal that should re-
ceive widespread, bi-partisan support.
Its a move that is long overdue. Its a
move that will keep people safe and
help law enforcement put people be-
hind bars and keep them there.
The governor points to a number of
statistics from a 2007 study by the Bu-
reau of Justice Statistics to support
his measure: about one-third of re-
leased defendants were charged with
one or more types of pretrial miscon-
duct; nearly one-fourth had a bench
warrant issued for failing to appear;
and about one-sixth were arrested for
a new arrest with more than half of
these new arrests for felonies.
Indeed, at some point, someone is
going to object to depriving someone
who is not convicted of his or her con-
stitutional rights. And thats a reason-
able debate to hold.
But well side with the governor on
this one. Defendants who have a histo-
ry of violence, who are a threat to the
community, and who are likely to try
to intimidate witnesses against them
need to be locked up.
Its time to take a stand for public
safety. Passing this amendment would
do just that.
Yes to bail reform measure
Heres one Christie proposal that should be widely supported
Bail reform a smart move
Reform could give judges an opportu-
nity to keep dangerous people off the
streets unable to commit additional
crimes or to intimidate those testify-
ing against them.

The event will raise funds to

The Cooper 125 Gala is going
to be one for the history books, as
