Calvary Caller

From Our Pastor

Rev. Dr. Amy Butler Senior Pastor Dear Calvary, Happy birthday to us. This Spring weve been highlighting 150 years of being a church here on the corner of 8th & H streets in Washington, D.C. 150 years is a lot of yearsit makes me think of when my children were in elementary school and were assigned to bring in 100 of something to celebrate the 100th day of school. Perhaps I should assign everyone to bring 150 friends to church on June 3? There will, indeed, be many friends from Calvarys past and present joining us over the gala weekend as we celebrate 150 years, but how can we fully appreciate the gift of all of these years, longer than any one human life, long enough to encompass many lives, even your life and mine? The foresight and faithfulness that planted a church on this corner has meant that in some way, some how, this community has been for us each a means of gracea glimpse of God. From important public figures wielding international power to people scraping the bottom of life, Calvary has been a place to welcome us all, a place where we could do the messy work of community as we try to live the way of Jesus. I am looking forward to seeing so many of you whose lives have been touched by this place, and whose investment of time and resources has insured that Calvary continues as a vital community dedicated to living out the Gospel. Please join us as we celebrate together 150 years of being the church! Looking forward to celebrating with you, Pastor Amy

Moving Forward in 2012

Ken Butler, Chairman Calvary Board of Trustees The new Calvary Baptist Church Board of Trustees held its organizational meeting on January 22, 2012, and elected the following officers: Ken Butler, Chairman Amanda Butler, Vice Chair Ellen Sulerzyski, Secretary Barbara Hoffer, Treasurer The Board expresses its deep appreciation for Phil Renfrow who Chaired the Trustees for the last two years and whose service has been invaluable for moving Calvary forward. We intend to keep the momentum going throughout 2012 as we celebrate our 150th Anniversary and deal with the many issues and challenges to our church facility and congregation that comes with being in existence for such a long time. Our major goals for 2012 include the following: 1. Conduct a major study to ascertain what we need to maintain and improve our beautiful sanctuary at Calvary and our other facilities and what would be the cost of those improvements; 2. Finalize a review of Calvarys finances from 2008 to 2011; 3. Work to improve our budgetary position in order to continue Calvarys service to its congregation and the community; 4. Find a partner to work with us on Camp Fraser and utilize that asset for what it was intendedserving our inner city youth and others while at the same time reducing the financial burden it has placed on Calvarys finances. Those are just a few of the challenges we face on the Board to keep moving ahead. With your help and support, 2012 will be a positive step forward.

Moderators Column
Soren Dayton, Calvary Moderator As many of you know, Calvarys Moderator writes a quarterly column and I wanted to use this opportunity to both introduce myself and tell you how I envision the next year at Calvary. Amanda and I have been members at Calvary since 2006. We joined when we were dating, and Calvary became a community for us in a variety of ways, including as a grounding home in D.C. as Amanda was in law school in Chicago, while I continued to work in politics in D.C. Since then, I have served as Chair of the Board of Missions, member of the Church Council, member of the Personnel Committee, Chair of the Pastor Search Committee that called Pastor Leah, and ordination committees. I grew up in and around churches. My (ordained Brethren in Christ and then Congregational) mother is a pastoral counselor while my (Wesleyan) father and (ordained United Methodist) step-father are seminary professors. And yes, I am named after Soren Kierkegaard the Danish theologian through whom my father found his way back to faith. Though my father taught at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, I did not grow up Baptist and Calvary was the first Baptist church I attended. Amanda grew up Methodist and has the ambivalences about Baptists that come from being a Southerner, and I was baptized in a Congregational church; our unique story is one of many that connects us to this different kind of Baptist church. It is interesting that I find myself as Moderator of Calvary at such an important moment in our congregations past and future. First and foremost we have an opportunity to reflect on the truly remarkable history of our church and wonder about ourselves, Why are we committed to serving our community, be it our congregation, our city, our country, or our world? What is our role as a high-profile church in our nations capital? Our self-awareness in how we answer these questions will be critical as we come to terms with and answer a series of questions that our church has faced over the years. The two most immediate ones are following through on the discussion about leaving the Southern Baptist Convention and the ongoing discussion about how to fulfill the mission of Camp Fraser in a financially sustainable way. At the same time there are fiscal and church-governance issues that we must address. Five years ago, we had a discussion about investing in the future of our congregation by tapping our endowment at a higher level. This added investment has been used to grow and restructure our staff, grow our membership, and reorganize our programs. This will be the fifth year of our plan, and it is time to look forward and begin planning how our next phase of growth will look. During this process, we have discovered a series of problems with the way our churchs by-laws are structured. These are all long-term questions about our identity.

My role as moderator is to listen to our congregation and staff and to guide our discussions as we work through these and other issues this year.

-Soren Dayton,

My role as moderator is to listen to our congregation and staff and to guide our discussions as we work through these and other issues this year. In that capacity, I will preside over many of our business meetings and participate in many conversations about our church. In the end, however, my goal is to work with you to make our faith community flourish. If you have questions or concerns about what is happening at Calvary, please reach out to me by phone at 202-552-1860 or by email at soren.dayton@gmail.com. I look forward to working and worshiping with every one of you.

Mission and Christian Education Boards

Carol Blythe, Mission Board Co-Chair The Mission and Christian Education Boards are meeting and working together again this year. We held a planning meeting on February 12. Pastor Edgar challenged us with the goal of transforming the world so that all people can live in the righteousness, justice and love of the household of God. This year, Danyelle Robinson and Laura Lee will serve as Co-Chairs of Christian Education, Jessica Lynd and Carol Blythe serving as Co-Chairs of Mission. Rick Goodman will serve as secretary for both boards. We also voted to appoint Allen Dalton to the Board of Christian Education. For these first three months of the year, we will continue our work with W.I.N. in organizing both for practical immigration efforts (D.C. drivers licenses), the downtown play-ground project, fair housing and employment. Throughout the year, we will be planning many events to support both the Shalom Scholarship and our sister-church relationship with Shalom Baptist Church, including the Good Friday concert on April 6, and the regular sale of fair trade coffee and Salvadoran crafts. We began plans on some after-worship forums where we hear from our own members on the good work they are doing in human rights, gender issues and the world food system. Ecumenical Advocacy Days is March 23-26. The years theme: Is This the Fast I Seek? Join other Christians in seeking a global economy and a national budget that break the yokes of injustice, poverty, hunger and unemploymentheeding the call in Isaiah 58 to become repairers of the breach and restorers of streets to live in. If you are interested in joining a group from Calvary that will attend this conference, please speak with Carol Blythe, Pastor Edgar Palacios or Jason Smith. If you are interested in helping teach English as a Second Language, speak to Myra Houser. If you are interested in helping with the Downtown Social Club (a program for residents of St. Elizabeths hospital) which meets the first and third Thursdays of each month, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., please speak to Carol Blythe. The first session of the Holistic Health Project will start March 9, and run through May 18. The Alliance of Baptists Convocation meets in Austin, TX from April 11 to 15. The Mission Board agreed to pay the registration fee for any Calvary members who can attend (you will need to provide your own transportation and lodging). Please speak to Jessica Lynd if you are interested.

CBF recognizes Calvary for Faithful Partnership

One of the deepest symbols of the Christian faith is Communion, when brothers and sisters in Christ join together to feast at Christs table. As a symbol of friendship and partnership in global missions and ministries, Steve Graham from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship recently presented Calvary with a handmade chalice and paten. Calvarys faithful participation in and gifts to the Fellowship enable life-changing mission and ministries around the world, ensuring that people across the globe have access to the resources they need to live and to the Gospel of Jesus Christ they need to live abundantly. From everyone at CBF, thank you Calvary Baptist Church for continued partnership and commitment to join Gods mission in the world.

Deacon Digest
Rachel Johnson, Chair of the Diaconate Board Life in community is never stagnant and Calvary's deacons are privileged to have the opportunity to walk alongside members of our community as we grow and change. The diaconate seeks to be a pastoral presence, reminding each of our members of the love of their broader church family. This past February, the new deacon board met for the first time and shared our hopes for Calvary in the year to come and the ways we will help our pastors minister to the congregation. So keep an eye out for the people with the snazzy name tags during worship, and we look forward to serving with you this year as we strive to live out God's call for the people of Calvary Baptist Church.

New Members
Andi and Trey Sullivan moved to D.C. in July 2011. They each recently completed their M. Div. degrees from the McAfee School of Theology. While they do miss the South, Andi and Trey are beginning to feel at home in D.C. Andi grew up outside of Paris mastering world languages, devouring books and brie, and winning art contests, and Trey grew up in Northeast Georgia mastering the southern accent, devouring biscuits, and winning cleanest uniform in every sport. Despite their differences, they have found some things they love to do together, including hiking and ridiculous television. Andi is a masters student of international politics at American University, and Trey is a chaplain resident at Georgetown University Hospital. They are very grateful for the home they have found at Calvary, and they look forward to becoming a part of the work and witness of the church.

For more information, contact Claudia Moore or Karla Fahey.

Womens Missionary Society

Vivian Nielsen It is amazing how far-reaching the effects of an hour or two of working together can be. In the case of WMS, rolling bandages and hemming baby blankets for a mission station the other side of the world can provide a much needed bit of comfort for a child with a broken arm, and a new cover for a tiny baby of a poor family. It also keeps us informed about world conditions that are not always provided by the news broadcasts. The mission work of women at Calvary, as well as through the DCBC Women's Department began in the 1800's.The WMS provides help through the work of our hands, as well as financial aid as requested. Each year brings new information with requests for specific items. New members are always welcome and needed. The usual meeting time is 10:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month of the school year. In February, we held the meeting in Maryland so that Dee Robbins could attend. Always adjustable, those present took up the work with renewed enthusiasm. We welcome anyone who wishes to join us and "Study Missions, Do Missions and Pray for (and learn about) missions." 9

Calvary: A Missionary Congregation

Rev. Edgar Palacios, Associate Pastor for Christian Education At Calvary we endeavor to create community through education programs and worship in order to become an agent of transformation. We aim to bring the Kingdom to this historical context by sharing Jesus Christ with those in pain and suffering and in situations that deny life and human dignity, labor rights, and women's rights. One of the ways we intend to bring the Kingdom of God in a local context is through advocating for driver licenses for all D.C. residents, low income housing opportunities for poor families, and jobs for the unemployed. Nationally, we are called to promote a culture of peace, to achieve comprehensive immigration reform, and to work for a national budget that prioritizes economic justice for all. Internationally, our mission is to strengthen and be strengthened by our mutually supportive relationship with Shalom Baptist Church in San Salvador. Shalom helps bring Jesus Christ to the poor of San Salvador, Shalom has limited economic resources, but with the guidance of the Spirit they are rich in service and creativity. We are inspired by the progress Shalom has made in San Salvador and hope to emulate their vision of the Kingdom in our own community. On local, national, and international levels, Calvary Baptist Church is a missionary church. May the Spirit of God continue to encourage us to advance this sublime task.
