Crystal Lattice Lab

Nicole Tsinajinnie Lap Partner: Tony Tran November 15, 2011 Period: 6

Abstract Water molecules were used in this lab to test how much in milliliters (mL) would hydrate 0.2 grams of crystal lattice. Thirty-six percent of water was hydrated by the lattice, resulting in a 5:1 ratio of water intake. The results disproved the hypothesis of a ninety-nine percent intake with a 10:1 ratio.

Procedure 1. Put your safety goggles on 2. Use a scapula to transfer 3. Pour 15-20 of into a of into a weigh dish. beaker (record the amount of water use. and ).

4. Make observations of each substance ( 5. Dissolve water used) . 6. Stir/Mix until is dissolved . of anhydrous in 15-20

7. Place in fume hood an allow water to evaporate. 8. Make observations of the hydrated copper (II) sulfate crystals. 9. Set up ring stand with ring and a clay triangle. 10. Wash and flame dry a crucible. 11. Let the crucible cool. Please do not place the hot crucible on the balance. 12. Once crucible is cooled place on balance and record the mass of the crucible. 13. Scrape the hydrate crystals from the beaker and transfer them to the crucible. 14. Mass the crucible with the hydrated copper (II) sulfate and record the mass of the hydrated copper (II) sulfate.

15. Place the Bunsen burner beneath the ring stand with the ring and clay triangle. 16. Turn the Bunsen burner on low and be sure that there is a distance of at least four inches between the flame and the bottom if the crucible. 17. Place the crucible containing the hydrated copper (II) sulfate onto the clay triangles 18. Allow all of the water to evaporate from hydrate 19. Immediately remove once all f the water has been driven out of the hydrate and place the counter. 20. Once the crucible has cooled place the crucible on the balance and record the mass of the crucible and the anhydrous copper (II) sulfate. (mass of anhydrate and the crucible minus the mass of the crucible) . 21. Calculate the mass of the anhydrous copper (II) sulfate by itself. 22. Determine the mass of water using the following formula: [Mass of hydrated Copper (II) sulfate mass of anhydrous copper (II) sulfate = mass of ] 23. Determine the molar mass of 24. Calculate moles [ mass . / mol = mol ] .

/ mass of

25. Determine the molar mass of 26. Calculate moles of anhydrous [ mass anhydrous 27. Determine the ration of [ mol / mol ] / molar mass : / mol = mol ]
