NORTHAMPTON -You don't need to be Irish to enjoy the Senior Center's Pot O'Luck luncheon on Thursday, March 15. The potluck meal will feature great company, conversation and entertainment, along with a wide variety of delicious food including homemade Irish soda bread. www.mcosgrove.com Mark Cosgrove's distinctive, creative flatpicking guitar sound is known and respected on both sides of the Atlantic, through both his own recordings and as a sideman and session player for Jerry Douglas and others. Although he grew up in a Manhattan apartment surrounded by classical records, his original musical ambition was to become a drummer. Immersed in bluegrass and fiddle tunes from an early age, he has continued to make acoustic music his life's work and pleasure. and also the Doc Watson Guitar Championship in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. His flatpick guitar work is notable not only for power, precision, and tone, but for his fluid high-speed improvisation. Mark is equally proficient in any number of musical styles and as an accompanist, can back a singer or soloist with taste and sensitivity.

John and the band, Quickstep, have their own recordings; the newest of these is titled, Shuffle About. In addition to performing, John teaches music at Bennington College in Vermont, and at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. Trish Miller has been teaching and performing Appalachian clogging since 1980. She plays guitar, banjo and a little ukulele. Trish is a dance caller and countrydance choreographer. Her stepping style is rooted in the southern mountains mixed with some steps from tap and Celtic repertoires. As a member of the Green Grass Cloggers, from Asheville, N.C., she toured throughout the U.S. & internationally. Irish and John are teaching artists in school music and dance programs. They lead dances for all ages at festivals & parties. Trish teaches banjo at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. Lively fiddle tunes, folksongs and fancy footwork are featured in a concert with John Kirk, Trish Miller & Ed Lowman. Many selections are rooted in the local lore of the Adirondacks and northeast woodlands. This trio is from Greenfield Center, NY, near the Adirondack mountains, and they play a diverse repertoire o f o r i g i n a l a n d o l d - t i m e music. Made in the Berkshires will run Columbus Day weekend, October 5, 6 and 7, 2012 at the Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield and the Unicorn Theatre, Stockbridge. Submitting artists must live and work at least part time in the Berkshires. From late February through early April, farmers in nearly every hill town village in Massachusetts honor an old New England tradition. They take to the woods with buckets, tubing and drills to gather the sap from sugar maple trees, boiling it down to pure maple syrup. Sugaring is the first sign of the annual agricultural awakening. Old-man winter disappears in puffs of sweet steam from weather-beaten sugar houses. The warmth of the evaporator and the aroma of hot syrup contrast with the lingering chill outside.
It's time for maple syrup poured over pancakes or waffles in a farm kitchen. Or for hot, thickened syrup dribbled over a pan of clean snow to make a rich taffy, called "sugar on snow." Our Massachusetts sugar houses welcome visitors to share the joy of the first true "rite of spring." All of the sugar houses listed in this directory are open to the public during the sugaring season (late February through mid-April), but its best to call ahead to get their hours and boiling schedules. Many sugar houses offer eating facilities where you can enjoy a sugarhouse meal
of steaming hot blueberry pancakes covered with freshly made pure maple syrup, as well as many other farm-fresh maple treats. Some areas of western Massachusetts have many sugar houses located a short drive from each other, so its possible to take a day or weekend trip and visit more than one. Many country inns and Bed & Breakfasts are located in maple sugaring country; write to or

Before you try to stop your car again, you may want to start thinking about your brakes. Consider the strength and power it takes to bring a 4,000-pound or heavier vehicle from 60 mph to a quick, safe stop. Many drivers take their brakes for granted until they squeal, grind or, worse, stop working altogether. Before that happens, you can get your brakes checked at a qualified, licensed service center. Driving with worn brakes is dangerous for you, your passengers, fellow motorists and pedestrians. Regular brake inspections also help prevent expensive damage and avert potential safety issues. Most cars today are equipped with disc brakes. When you put your foot on the brake pedal, fluid triggers a piston in a caliper to press the brake pad against a rotor on the wheel. The friction of the pad against the rotor stops the hub and wheeland, therefore, the vehicle. The friction from braking also generates intense heat and brake dust as the pads begin to wear. When pads get too thin, not only can braking ability be compromised, but the heat can damage the rotors and lead to even costlier repairs. Quality brake pads have a built-in wear indicator that makes a highpitched noise when the pads are worn. Its your warning to get your brakes checked as soon as possible. Other signs that you may need brake service: Your s topping dis tance is increasing, causing a longer braking distance You have to push the brake pedal unusually far to engage the brakes Your vehicle has a tendency to move right or left when the brakes are applied The steering wheel shakes in your hands as you come to a stop. (This could mean your rotors are damaged, or warped, and need attention.) When your brakes or rotors need replacing, use quality, tested products designed for your vehicle.
