3. (a) State and prove the orthogonality property of legendre polynomials. (b) If tan(x+iy)=sin(u+iv), prove that
sin 2x sinh 2y

4. (a) Show that the function [x2 (1 + i) y 2 (1 i))/(x + y)] where z = 0 and f(z)=0, when z=0 is continuous. Prove also that the Cauchy-Riemann equations are satised for f(z) at z=0. (b) Examine whether the function u(x,y)=cos x coshy can be the real part of an analytic function. If so, determine its imaginary part v(x,y). [10+10] 5. (a) Show that under the mapping w = cosz, the straight lines parallel to the coordinate axis in the x-plane is mapped on to the axes of the confocal conics. Find the images of the lines x =0 and x = . 2 (b) Find the Bilinear transformation which maps the points i,-1, 1 of the z-plane on to 0,1, of the w-plane. What are the xed points of the transformation. [10+10] 6. (a) Calculate standard deviation from the following table x 10 11 12 13 14 f 3 12 18 12 3 (b) A factory has two plants. Records show that the plant I produces 30% of the items of the output whereas plant II produces 70% of the items. Further 5% of the items produced by plant I are defective while 1% produced by the plant II are defective. If a defective item is drawn at random, nd the probability that the defective item was produced by: 1 of 2
