1. Find graphically, using Mohrs circle of stress, the magnitude of principal stresses, the direction of principal planes if a strained material is subjected to like direct stresses (tensile) on two mutually perpendicular planes, of magnitude 70 MPa and 20 MPa. The shearing shearing stresses across these planes have magnitude of 15 MPa. Find also the magnitude and direction of max. shear stress. [20] 2. (a) Briey explain the max. principal stress theory.

(b) A certain type of steel has proportionality limit of 270N/mm2 (tensile), 60N/mm2 (tensile) and 30N/mm2 (compressive). Find the factor of safety according to max. principal stress theory. [8+12] 3. Calculate the dia. of shaft which will transmit 50 H.P. at 150 R.P.M; if the shearing stress is limited to 50N/mm2 and the angle of twist should not exceed 10 in 2.5m length. N = 8X104N/mm2 . [20] 4. A close coiled helical spring can absorb 30 N- m of energy with an extension of 150mm. The mean dia. of coil is 12 times wire dia. If the max. shear stress set up in the spring is not to exceed 100N/mm2 determine the mean dia. of coil, wire dia, and the number of turns. [20] 5. A cylindrical steel chimney 40m high, 2m external dia, thickness of metal 0.15m at base, is exposed to a horizontal wind pressure, whose intensity varies as the square root of the height above the ground. At a height of 16m above ground the intensity of wind-pressure on a at surface is 2.4kN/m2 . The self-weight of the chimney is 30kN. If the coecient wind pressure is 0.6, calculate the stresses at the base and sketch the variation. [20]

7. A compound cylinder is formed by shrinking one tube on to another, the nal dimensions being, internal diameter 120 mm, external diameter 240 mm, diameter at junction 180 mm. if after shrinking on, the radial pressure at the common surface is 8N/mm2 , calculate the initial hoop stresses across the sections of the inner and outer tubes. If a uid under a pressure of 60N/mm2 , is admitted inside the compound cylinder, calculate the nal stresses set up in the sections of the pipes. [20] 8. An unequal angle section 60mm40mm6mm is placed with its longer leg vertical and used as a simply supported beam of span 2m. It carries a u.d.l. Which producer 1 of 2
