Alex Wagner Mr. B 12 February 2012 ENGL 1102 Synthesis Essay My historical event is the raid of the Barker Ranch in California in which horrific events occurred from a cult called The Manson Family To better understand the family I will use research from the trial, the murders, the family members and Manson himself. Each source I found is helpful to my research. My first source is a book by the Prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial. His inside look at the case. From this book I will use information to describe the trial. The trial is important to understanding the murders, the selection of them and the strong discipline Manson held over his family members. The other book I used is another firsthand look at one of Mansons girls Leslie Van Houten. Written by a prison teacher who has known Van Houten for some 32 years. I find it important to understand the girls life before becoming a part of the family. The next three sources used were newspaper articles. I find that newspaper articles from 1969-1970 were important to understand the hysteria occurring at that time. Its the information the general public was viewing new. These past articles are important to look back on to understand the theories of the Manson family. The words Helter Skelter caused a curiosity to what Manson could have been planning before his arrest/raid in 1969.
