Please fill out with brief notes at the end of your NSTP Session in PGH or VABES. Use additional pages when necessary. Assigned area/ Date 3 things I learned Ward 1 VABES Renal Ward MICU GIC

The male and female wards are separated. You have to kindly remind the watchers to throw their trash in the proper receptacle. I learned how to fold gauzes.

Children need a lot of attention. Especially the shy types, children need a lot of encouragem ent. In the kindergarten level, delivering the actual content of the lesson requires effectively catching the childs attention.

Dialysis costs a lot. Renal patients usually have dialysis procedures 3x a week. Dialysis procedures lasts a few hours

I learned how to interpret the EKG. MICU patients need peace and silence more than other patients. One must take care not to stress MICU patients with insensitive remarks or making loud noises.

In preparing a biopsy, several samples of the same tissue must be taken. An EGD is an endoscopi c procedure probing the esophagu s, gastric section, and the duodenum . A colonosco py is an endoscopi c procedure probing the rectum, large, and small

1-2 [or more] things I liked

I was given the chance to deliver a patient on a wheelchair to the Radiology room.

I got assigned to the star section. The teacher let us drill them about shapes and colors.

The Renal Ward was airconditione d. The ward had cable T.V. which put the dialysis patients at ease.

We got to observe medical students talking about the history of a MICU patient.

1-2 [or more] ways on how the clinic systems, and your tour of duty with them be improved

Perhaps being given the opportunity to interact more with the patients, or even the watchers would have helped us learn more about the ward.

It would be better if we can arrive earlier at the school so we can be more involved in teaching the students. Most of the time, we just watched the teacher delivering the lesson.

The comfort room must be better maintained and sanitized.

Perhaps if they could let us entertain the MICU patients, through conversatio n or by singing to them, we would have been able to better know about them and about the ward.

intestine. I was given the chance to assist in procuring a sample of esophagy eal tissue for biopsy. Our facilitator really got us involved in some procedure s. Some doctors even talked and explained the procedure to us. Adding a few square meters to the ward may help with clearing the usual traffic in the area as well as providing a more comfortabl e, more spacious recovery room. Nicest moderator! Really got us to help out in procedures! I learned a lot!
