CATHEDRAL SCHOOL NEWS

Edition No. 23
12th March 2012. Dear Parents, A numeric brick wall: multiplication tables We often hear parents and adults in all walks of life say how they were taught multiplication tables (also known as times tables) at school: chanting by rote one times two is two, two times two is four... and so on. We also often hear of adults saying how they didnt like Maths at school because they didnt know their times tables, or that they found learning their times tables difficult. These views, although warranted, often have a detrimental impact on a childs learning as they will feel that they too cannot be good at Numeracy because they find their multiplication tables difficult. There can be no doubt that having a solid knowledge of multiplication tables, and understanding the concept behind them, can be a springboard to finding other areas of Numeracy much, much easier. Multiplication tables are, at the core, number patterns. So much in the Numeracy world is based on finding the pattern within the concept, and being able to link that pattern to other areas of Numeracy. This is why knowing the multiplication facts is such a key skill. So how can you help? Never fear! Help is here! There are so many resources and practical ways of supporting your child when learning their multiplication tables. The good thing is, that once a child is able to add and subtract the same number in a repeating fashion, then multiplication is the next logical step, so it is never too early to get started! By the time a child leaves Year 2, the national expectation is that they will know their 2, 5 and 10 multiplication table well enough to apply them in other situations and be able to solve these multiplication problems quickly, without having to do a lot of working out. Therefore, children in Key Stage One (Years 1 and 2) should be focusing on these multiplication tables in particular: 2 x table 5 x table 10 x table 0x2=0 0x5=0 0 x 10 = 0 1x2=2 1x5=5 1 x 10 = 10 2x2=4 2 x 5 = 10 2 x 10 = 20 3x2=6 3 x 5 = 15 3 x 10 = 30 4x2=8 4 x 5 = 20 4 x 10 = 40 5 x 2 = 10 5 x 5 = 25 5 x 10 = 50 6 x 2 = 12 6 x 5 = 30 6 x 10 = 60 7 x 2 = 14 7 x 5 = 35 7 x 10 = 70 8 x 2 = 16 8 x 5 = 40 8 x 10 = 80 9 x 2 = 18 9 x 5 = 45 9 x 10 = 90 10 x 2 = 20 10 x 5 = 50 10 x 10 = 100 11 x 2 = 22 11 x 5 = 55 11 x 10 = 110 12 x 2 = 24 12 x 5 = 60 12 x 2 = 120

Games that can help children learn these tables include memory, where the times tables are written on one side of small pieces of paper and the answers are on the other side and the child has to match up the correct number sentence and answer; quick fire questioning, and online games from websites such as... www.mathszone.co.uk www.multiplication.com/games www.familylearning.org.uk/multiplication_games.html ...as well as many more, easily accessible sites that can be used with adult support and supervision. In Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6), children will learn to apply the skills they have acquired when learning the early multiplication tables to securing knowledge of higher multiplication tables, which are on included in this Newsletter. Practicing times tables daily has been proven to boost childrens confidence and success in Numeracy lessons, and is something that can be done easily and quickly either each evening, or on the way to school. I practice my times tables every night with my brother. I have a poster of them on my wall. Now I can understand more in my lessons- Year 3 child. When we used to have times tables tests in Year 5 I would spend the evenings before going over them. Knowing them is so helpful in different parts of Maths-Year 6 child. If you would like a list of further websites that are useful for this, and other areas of Maths, please do not hesitate to ask your childs class teacher. I hope you enjoy working with your child in making connections with multiplication. RM Maths and Mathletics UPDATE! Following feedback for parents and children, we are looking into the possibility of bringing back the use of Mathletics to Cathedral Primary, as well as ensuring that RM Maths is used in school to support those children who will benefit most from it. Keep your eyes peeled for more details!
