SORPTION PUMPS

Roughing Accessories Huntington Sorption Pumps

A sorption pump removes gases from a vacuum chamber by the combined processes of adsorption and absorption. Huntington sorption pumps use no oil, and no hydrocarbons of any kind. The pump has no moving parts.
As a result, the Huntington sorption pump is ultra-clean and vibration free, and because it is a closed system it is unlikely to introduce contaminants into the chamber. The materials used in Huntington sorption pumps are selected for maximum heat transfer and efficient pumping. The Huntington design features a body and internal fins made of aluminum. This allows the molecular sieve to be chilled more uniformly than is possible with other materials. The sorption pump is usually connected to the system to be pumped by a valve which often acts as its only support. The neck and flange of the sorption pump are made of type 304 stainless steel to insulate the valves so they do not freeze up. The liquid nitrogen percolates up the hollow tube running through the center of the sorption pump to a deflector plate and back down the outside wall of the pump. This efficient circulation of the liquid nitrogen reduces the time necessary from the chill-down of the pump. Within twenty minutes the pump body, percolating tube, and internal fins and baffles cool the molecular sieve material to about -196 C. The valve between the pump and the vacuum chamber is then opened. During the operation of the pump, gas molecules from the vacuum chamber are drawn into the sorption pump and adhere to the surface of the molecular sieve (adsorption). Some molecules penetrate the molecular sieve material (absorption). When the pressure ceases to drop, the valve should then be closed. (This may take anywhere from ten seconds to ten minutes.) When using two or more pumps, the first pump is chilled, the valve is opened and remains open until the pressure stops dropping. The valve is then closed to tap lighter gases that otherwise migrate back into the vacuum chamber. The valve to the second chilled pump is then opened. Additional gases including light gases otherwise difficult to pump effectively at liquid nitrogen temperatures are dragged into the pump along with the heavier gases and are trapped by the chilled molecular sieve. When the pressure stops dropping the valve is closed. A third pump in tandem is recommended when the need is to pump even larger volumes. A Viton plug acts as a safety valve to vent the gas desorbed when the pump returns to room temperature. A wraparound heater can be used to speed this operation. Each sorption pump has a capacity of 80,000 torr-liters before becoming saturated with water vapor. However, the trapping material can then be regenerated repeatedly by baking at 250C for two or more hours. This drives off the water vapor that is not completely driven off when the bakeout heater is only used to return the pump to room temperature between cycles. In order to assure maximum capacity pumping it is recommended that the sorption pump be baked out after every five or six pumping cycles. WARNING! When baking out, it is important that the Viton safety plug is removed so that the escaping water vapors and other gases do not build up bursting pressure. In common practice users usually bakeout their sorption pump overnight so that they are ready for full capacity operation at the beginning of their days work.

Synthetic Zeolite
The molecular sieve material used the sorption pump is synthetically prepared alumino silicates called Zeolite. The finished pellets are combination of crystallized Zeolite and china clay bonded into pellets. This material looks like small clay-colored pellets about 1/16 inch in diameter and 3/8 inch long. The pellet manufacturing process leaves a cavity structure with a controlled pore diameter. The highly porous nature of the pellets provides a large surface area to volume ratio for sorption to take place. The molecular sieve trapping material is available from Huntington in one and one-half pound packages. The Huntington sorption pump, Model SP-151 holds two packages for Zeolite. To Fill the pump with the Zeolite it is necessary to remove the six socket nuts on the mini port at the top of the pump. Then, with the aid of a funnel, pour two packages of Zeolite material into the pump. In normal use with bakeout temperatures no more that 250C the molecular sieve material may last indefinitely. Huntington offers two styles of liquid nitrogen dewars: 1. A styrofoam dewars constructed of high-density, expanded polystyrene with embedded stainless steel hangers. (Model SP-901). These are inexpensive, light and easy to remove when baking. 2 A type 304 stainless steel double walled vacuum insulated dewar. (Model SP-911)

Setup and Operating Procedures

Once the sorption pumps are in place with a closed isolation valve between each sorption pump and the system to be pumped: 1. Suspend a liquid nitrogen dewar from each sorption pump. 2. Fill each dewar with liquid nitrogen up the shoulder of the sorption pump. 3. After 15 to 20 minutes the trapping material should be at or near -196C. Open the valve to the first sorption pump 4. When the pressure ceases to drop close the valve isolating the first pump. 5. If additional pumps are in place, open the valve to the second pump. 6. When the pressure ceases to fall, close the valve to the second pump. 7. If a third pump is in place, open its isolation valve. 8. When the pressure ceases to drop close the valve. 9. Remove the liquid nitrogen from each pump and allow them to return to room temperature. (Wrap around heaters may be used to speed up this process) 10. After the sorption pumps have warmed to room temperature the procedure may start over at #1 above and be repeated 5 or 6 times before baking out to 250C.

Huntington also offers standard wrap around heaters which operate on 115 volts, 50/60 hertz, 350 watts and heat to a bakeout temperature of 250C.

Cryogenic Sorption Pumps

Huntington cryogenic sorption pumps operate more efficiently than most other types. LN2 not only cools the outside of the pump but percolates up through the center to a deflector plate and back down around the outer surface of the aluminum body affording faster chill-down. The Huntington sorption pump is ultraclean and vibration free, using neither oil nor electrical power and having no moving parts. Immersing the Huntington sorption pump into a dewar full of liquid nitrogen begins the pumping action. Pumping is accomplished by adsorption of the gas molecules to the surface of the chilled trapping material. Often, these pumps are used in a series, operating in a sequence of two or three, depending on the volume to be evacuated. When saturated, the Huntington sorption pump can be regenerated by heating the pump, thereby driving off the absorbed gases. (Remove Viton plug when heating.) Construction The materials used in Huntington sorption pumps are selected for maximum heat transfer and efficient pumping. All-aluminum body and finds joined to type 304 stainless steel neck and flange allow the synthetic zeolite molecular sieve to be chilled more uniformly than is possible with other designs The Huntington Model SP-151 sorption pump is equipped with a sieve charge filling port. The Viton stopper must be removed during gas desorption to avoid the danger of pressure buildup.
