We have had an influx of new members this first quarter of 2005. It has been a pleasure meeting and assisting each one of you. Remember the staff is here for you. If you have any questions, concerns, or solutions to problems you have noticed, take these issues up the chain of command, beginning with your element leader. Encampment. Count it up we had 8 MCCS seniors that COMMANDERS supported the encampment! COMMENTS That is a wonderful record. FROM THE CHIEF Cadets you were a little low in AIR FORCE numbers, but of the five that ADMISSION did attend, two were on staff. I heard excellent reports about PREREQUISITES REFLECTIONS all of you. Again thank you staff for making MCCS one of the best squadrons in Illinois.

By C/2Lt Maria Mangano Although the branches of the military are different, they all have the same, basic, core values. As the name implies, core values are a foundation of standards or ideas that must be followed if the unit is to work smoothly. Courage is necessary in any mission. A member may be asked to perform an activity that takes courage, such as a shy cadet acting as the flight commander. This goes hand in hand with dedication and loyalty, as members must be willing to take risks. When someone has honor, they have respect, integrity; they are trustworthy and reliable. A cadet with honor leads by example, earns the respect of her or his peers, and follows through with assignments, whether asked to or not. Core Values apply to any organization, not just the military. In Civil Air Patrol the Core Values are essential to ensure the unit functions. Remember the Core Values, you can relate them to any aspect of your life. ~United States Air Force Core Values are: Integrity First, Service before self, Excellence in all we do.

AIR FORCE ACADEMY

By 2Lt. Estera Corcoran April 19, 2005 our squadron was visited by Lt. Col. Greg Keller, mission liaison for the United States Academy and ROTC. During his visit he gave us an invaluable insight on requirements for acceptance into the Air Force Academy. The pre-assessment of the potential candidates for the Academy includes both mental and physical evaluations. Other requirements are excellent ACT/SAT scores and the need for a congressional nomination which could be from a congressman or a senator. Candidates evaluations are based not only on their grades (which have to be excellent) but also on their test scores, extracurricular activities and an interview with the an ad-

REFLECTIONS FROM SENIORS POINT OF VIEW AT GREAT LAKES SPRING ENCAMPMENT
By 1Lt. Doris Mangano Last year, I attended Great Lakes Encampment to watch over my daughterMaria. Since she had not attended this year, I struggled wondering should I, or shouldnt I go? I thought of the negative things, exhaustion after 2 days of not sleeping, being tired of looking at cadets blister covered feet and wondering why they didnt break in their boots before coming. I thought of the few seniors who complained all the time. It was no fun being vomited upon and having to walk around for two days with this on my pants. It was uncomfortable being thrown into the military environment for the first time. Being gently corrected on my customs and courtesies was a learning experience for me. It left me with a new understanding and respect for basic training and knowledge of CAP.

ESDA
By 2Lt. Estera Corcoran April 12, 2005, our Squadron had an opportunity to visit with ESDA (Emergency Services Disaster Agency) in Woodstock, IL. We were familiarized with the way the agency helps the community if and when needed. Basically, the system works like this. All county departments (health, police, fire, etc) have representatives in one shared room where they can rapidly communicate with each other. Volunteers in the field communicate by radios while their physical location is displayed on the computer screen at the command center.

The Challenger Center provides an opportunity for students and adults to experience a simulated space mission. The missions are designed to enhance math,

frustrating, at one time we had to get back to reality, stop to listen to instructions, while in our pretend world mission we had a major emergency as instruments were telling us we were about to be hit by an incoming meteor and we craved to react to this potential disaster... Oh well, it was exciting.

The cadets mission, assigned by Challenger Center employees, was to meet with a comet and to send out two probes, one with a camera attached to it, in front of the comet for scientific analysis purposes. Some of us were involved in building a probe, which was a challenge as robots, controlled by us, kept dropping everything due to our clumsiness. Cadets and participating Seniors were assigned to different departments; communications, data officers, navigators, medical staff, mission specialists, remote control, life support, safety and isolation.

LtCol John Salvador, Director of Operations, National Headquarters, gave several presentations including Joint Doctrine and CAP Missions, Current Operations and Training, and the ARCHER system. He was also gracious to hang around the conference and answer everyone's questions. Each wing brought their CAP aircraft to train on the Satellite-Transmitted Digital Imaging System (SDIS) system. CAP members can capture images from the air with a digital camera, and quickly transmit the images with an onboard laptop computer via e-mail and a satellite phone. The transmission can occur in near real-time, allowing emergency operations centers to better plan assistance for disaster victims and assess property damage.

By 1Lt. Doris Mangano Amtrak notified me of a schedule change, we will have to leave DC 2 hours earlier than planned on June 24th. Thanks to Lt. Freunds idea, I have contacted Mr. Biederman for assistance to get into the White House. He is working on it. Although, we do have the advantage , because we are a military group, there is no guarantee. CAP just changed its guidelines in March for visiting DC. Service Jackets are not needed for cadets, but are needed for seniors. Cadets may wear short sleeves. Wednesday June 22, when we visit Arlington Cemetery the service jacket will be required. Visitation is permitted in the morning only at the White House (starting at 0730) if the day is hot, well take the subway back to the hotel to change into shorts!
